Does the US treasury secretary even know what the "third arrow" actually is?
David Varnes
Considering that Abe himself isn't clear on what the third arrow is besides "structural reform," which could mean anything..... no. I doubt that Lew knows what the third arrow entails. We could go off of the ideas put forth by various pundits both US and Japan based that repeatedly state that the bureaucratic nightmare that is the Japanese government must be reformed, but until Abe actually does something, we won't know if the third arrow is an arrow, a plastic tipped dart, or just hot air.

No chance: Abe shies away from taking on vested interests every time. No bold decision making can be expected from him, despite all his guff to the contrary.

They keep requesting for Abes third arrow, failing to realize it will never come or even what it is. Immigration reform seems to be squashed. Women equality? Some of them he posted in cabinet positons, only latter found to be aligned with extremist. Others had to resign due to alleged fraud. The third arrow is uncomfortable territory for Abe, thus he will put it off till latter or side show it with China visits etc. I think its impossible to even define it, let alone implement it. It will be more of the first two arrows, nothing of the third.

That's not what Lew is requesting.

"We are looking for the Three Arrows that have been misplaced somewhere", Aso responded.

The third arrow is to turn time back to 1980. Or maybe to create 50 million educated 20-year-olds.

When have free market reforms ever helped a developed economy? History shows they lead to lower growth and lower real wages.
Japan's economy was healthier BEFORE it came under pressure to "reform" itself.

Jack says: Japan needs to use all three arrows of its economic recovery policy to escape deflation! Abe: What? Jack: arrow 1: T, arrow 2: P, arrow 3: P! TPP!!!! Oh, please~

YES. It is a structural economic reform. Old economic system has to go. It has to be replaced by New Model.
FYI, do you really need the KEIDANREN in economic system? When did you reform Japanese Fair Labor law in global economy? Is your distribution channel efficient and effective for consumers? Are you focusing on domestic need (building hospitals, medical resources and supplies) for aging demography? Are you setting up more child care in local communities? Are you freeing and encouraging women, so that they can go back to work? Oh...do not get me started. Japan needs to do a lot.

I thought Abe's three arrows were; print more money, bleed as much tax as possible from those who are actually producing, and make sure I see my friends right.

We, US, have been saying Japan needs to reform a "structural economic" for the past 3 decades.
I am beginning to wonder if you guys are really serious to go for this major change. You know yourself that you can no longer kid yourself with lip service in rapidly changing global economy. It takes a strong leadership and vision to change. Japan is not a problem solver, shame.

So this is his strategy to show he knows Asia more than Hillary. He hopes he will be elected as DEM Presidential candidate,
