I think one thing is certain in all of this: the US is deeply committed in this region and it may become one of the most stressful and demanding political and military commitments it has given the unstable nature of China and the murky nature of it's true intentions.

China are certainly intent on throwing their weight around in the region, but the extent of that remains to be seen. They are currently bullying some of their smaller/less powerful neighbours with territorial claims,:

and with a festering national vendetta against Japan they seem hell bent on restoring national pride somehow, despite the fact that the rest of the world has grown up and long moved on.

So, the US has a tough gig here. It has a complicated and intimate relationship with Japan built over the last 60 odd years that means it is deeply committed to Japan's safety, and if push comes to shove, it will have to honour that relationship.

Keep on talking, to ask the communist Chinese stop being greedy is like wishing upon a star.

"We don't want to confront China. "

This remark by a US official surely sent a wrong signal to China.

In a statement released by the Chinese embassy in Myanmar following Saturday's talks between Kerry and Wang, Beijing welcomed "the constructive role" played by the U.S. in regional affairs, adding that it "hopes that the US can respect China's legitimate rights and interests in this region".

We already have too many armed conflicts this year. Let us hope no more is added in the South or the East China Sea.

Kerry's aiming to do something to improve his abysmal foreign policy record.

I can't wait for a new U.S. administration with some cojones.

The US better stand tall for ASEAN. If they don't China will certainly start a war and the U.S. will be to blame.

Kerry and Obama have this ridiculous impression that countries will act in a ways that they (Kerry/Obama) believe is in their best interests. East Asia will be lucky if it can make it through the next 2.5 years without China taking a very serious action regarding it's wide ranging territorial claims in the region.

The US does NOT try to cool east Asian tensions. Why should it? It needs more of it. So it's fanning it. How else can the American's demonstrate its "leadership" in Asia?

What the US needs is a war among the Asian nations, so it can sell weapons and then eventually come in to "save the world". This is what they did in Europe. This is how they became super power in the past.

All the PR about reducing tensions is farce. In reality it's trying to provoke little wars all over the place.

One must learn to understand a country not by what they say or even what they do, but by what they have actually accomplished. What has the US actually accomplished over all the world? You tell me.

I do not believe that China will change her foreign posture on her own, but will change only according to how other nations act towards her. A change in the containment policy may change her attitudes. For North Korea there's no future in Kim's future. The North Korean regime is almost certain to fall, either from its own ineptness or an army overthrow, and destabilize the region. The United States and South Korea must be ready to step in.

Yes. US became rich through WWI and WWII. But still today many Americans criticize Japan over WWII, which I don't like. But why doesn't US trust Japan now?

What has the US actually accomplished over all the world?

World's #1 economy

1 movie industry 1 giver of aid to other countries

Countless inventions, both medical and others

etc.

It's ridiculous to say that the US has not contributed to the world.
