The UN has been bought and in the hands of the Chong Dae Hyup and the CCP propaganda war. They even quote them verbatim. One would think the purpose of the UN is to advance understanding and agreements and should be praising the 2015 South Korea-Japan Agreement resolving the Comfort Women issue.

Ok so this U.N. committee has decided to say that although in the past and in accordance with the UN, Japan past apologies that were supposedly final are now not.

They want more, or are they bending to anti Japan pressure from anti Japan nationalist nations like China and S Korea.

I don’t feel like Japan is genuinely apologetic to these nations on a human level as that’s not really possible. It seems to me that people here and in China and Korea too, have been taught in school and by their governments to fear their “evil neighbors”.

But I do think that this is completely unbenefical and won’t help anything because I don’t believe that China or SK would ever accept anything less than revenge at this point. You can’t reallyapologize to someone who’s not going to accept the apology.

Japan should withdraw all funding from the UN. It is an undemocratic organization, and Japan no longer needs to be a member. It is just bullying.

23 ( +39 / -16 )

Damn, the UN is like that ex that won't leave you alone.

24 ( +34 / -10 )

Japan is so eager to sweep the issue under the rug they have lost the sense of sincerity and compassion victims deserve...

-19 ( +16 / -35 )

A U.N. committee on discrimination urged Japan on Thursday to adopt a victim-centered approach toward "comfort women" forced to work in Japan's wartime military brothels, to ensure a lasting solution to the issue.

Well, taking a page from the Book of Abe, anytime anyone "urges" Japan to do anything it's bound to fail. It's damn near there already, consider just how many "victims" are still alive today.

The committee also expressed concerns about violence against women in Okinawa, and military aircraft accidents in civilian areas of Japan's southern island prefecture.

The overwhelming statistics show that violence against women in Okinawa is perpetrated by, Japanese against Japanese. Inferring that it's something else is just another effort by this UN committee to interject their political agenda into the discussion.

The committee called on the Japanese government to take action to properly protect the safety of the people of Okinawa, such as by ensuring the proper prosecution and conviction of base personnel who commit crimes.

What era are these people living in? Folks can talk about the past all they want but things today are nothing like that, and the bases have been bending over backwards to accommodate the Japanese authorities when there has been a report of a crime.

Hopefully China and Korea reject this UN finding as criminal and biased like they did with other disputes.

23 ( +31 / -8 )

The United States of Northeast Asia needs to resolve the problems among themselves, and the problem can be resolved if Japan is fully cooperative.

-33 ( +5 / -38 )

Won't happen. Japan doesn't listen to international opinion or advice. It listens to money it seems.

-25 ( +12 / -37 )

The issue was resolved forever in 2015. The UN should tell Korea not to back track on signed agreements.

28 ( +36 / -8 )

The committee also expressed concerns about violence against women in Okinawa, and military aircraft accidents in civilian areas of Japan's southern island prefecture.

For years, Okinawa Prefecture residents have complained about the noise, crime and accidents linked to U.S. military bases there.

The committee called on the Japanese government to take action to properly protect the safety of the people of Okinawa, such as by ensuring the proper prosecution and conviction of base personnel who commit crimes.

Let's gloss over the fact that the overwhelming majority of crime in Okinawa is committed by locals and instead figure out how we can cause more discord between the US military and residents of Okinawa. The spirit of Onaga is alive and well at the UN.

13 ( +24 / -11 )

Japan refutes any negative connotation of its actions past and present. The constant virilant denile of any wrong doing just enforces the fact that it's too much to ask for a honest outlook.

Talking about China, it supposedly urged local univ to "delay" symposium on comfort women issue in view of forthcoming high-level official meeting including possible currency swap.

I believe this well exemplifies how China treats comfort women issue. It is just one of the cards in Chinese hand to take advantage of Japan. As long as China wants to keep the card, any genuine apology or generous compensation won't make sense.

The UN is a joke. Funded by taxpayers from various countries so that corrupt UN reps can play both sides against the middle while they fly and dine first class.

This is a typical example. The UN poses and preens for China and Korea, and contributes nothing meaningful to the discussion. On what basis does the UN have any moral authority?

26 ( +34 / -8 )

Start with an official apology that specifically addresses forced sexual slavery and the other nations the victim, and Japan the aggressor. Make it illegal to say it did not happen, punishable with impisonment -- same as Holocaust deniers in some European countries.

If Japan sincerely atones, the world will move forward.

-24 ( +11 / -35 )

I call them sex slaves.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

The UN should send the issue to the "human rights" commission made up of dictatorships and other repugnant countries so that they can really slag Japan and make it obvious to everybody that the UN is just a bunch of sniveling wannabes.

17 ( +22 / -5 )

Sorry to say but Japan has never been good at seeing things from another’s point-of-view.

-9 ( +12 / -21 )

It seems that there is no possible lasting solution, someone will always demand more.

17 ( +21 / -4 )

can anyone direct me to evidence that comfort women existed? i don't mean people saying it happened, but actual proof. any language is fine. it must exist, but i've never been able to find any.

There is plenty of documentation. Maybe not on 2channel, though.

I'm really amazed by the rightwing Japanese nationalist turnout on this thread. This news must have really touched a nerve.

e.g. 21 up-votes for this usual provocateur's post:

Japan should withdraw all funding from the UN.

Well, good luck with that. And good luck getting your UNESCO World Heritage Sites and permanent seat on the Security Council.

-14 ( +7 / -21 )

The UN really has its priorities wrong. Instead of dealing with the unbelievable genocide in Myanmar, the historic crimes against humanity committed in North Korea, the destruction of democracy and decency in Russia, the incalculable abuse of human rights in China, the slide to dictatorship in Turkey, the UN instead bizarrely focuses on a handful of unproven claims by wealthy and prosperous Koreans?

How courageous of the UN

"Japan should withdraw all funding from the UN. It is an undemocratic organization, and Japan no longer needs to be a member. It is just bullying."

You guys Always say this, until you want another site Registered with UNESCO, and even threaten not to pay the money you OWE if they approve sights or cultural properties you Don't like. Doesn't work that way.

Let's start by Calling a spade a spade, so to speak -- they were sex slaves, not "comfort women". Drop the euphemisms and tell it like it is. You can't start a debate on recognizing and resolving history with a lie.

-12 ( +8 / -20 )

Not this again. The UN has to be careful here lest they disgrace themselves as much as South Korea has by bringing this up like a spurned ex-girlfriend every 3 weeks. The UN still has a function to play in the world, but they are putting their reputation and credibility at risk by going down this silly path and endorsing unproven allegations

13 ( +18 / -5 )

What the hell? Sex slaves get down voted, because the eufamisom comfort women is more paletabe.? State sponsored rape is what it was and many grandfathers were implicit in this crime. The first step is acknowledging a fact.

-15 ( +5 / -20 )

Now even the UN is pretending that the irreversible agreement between South Korea and Japan a few years ago doesn't exist. The UN has just set an appalling and shameful precedent and all nations across the world should follow the UN's lead and break any and all signed international agreements like Trump did with Iran

plasticmoney, i often hear "There is plenty of documentation". But do you know where it can be found?

can anyone direct me to evidence that comfort women existed?

Former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone admitted to running a sex slave station in his book the Neverending Navy and freely commented on it at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in March 2007.

Former President of Fuji Sankei Nobutaka Shikanai discussed managing sex slave stations in his book The Secret History After the War.

And so it rumbles on, like a lumbering old juggernaut that has lost all steering... sailing the same path, decade after decade. Japanese apologise, Chinese and SK governments say it's not enough... Japan makes another apology and a final payment agreed by SK... and it's like it never happened. Same old stuff time and time again.

Seriously, what do the SK and Chinese leaders want? The Emperor to commit ritual suicide as an apology? I don't think they'd be happy even with that, to be honest.

Every book refers to a "Comfort Station". Making up biased terms is intellectually dishonest.

thanks ossanamerica. that doc isn't exactly overwhelming evidence, is it? and nakasone has denied sex slaves. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/23/AR2007032300304.html?noredirect=on

thanks ossanamerica. that doc isn't exactly overwhelming evidence, is it?

You asked for evidence that Comfort Women existed. The US Army Report is overwhelming evidence that it did exist. Did you note that the term "sex slaves" does not appear anywhere?

and nakasone has denied sex slaves. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/23/AR2007032300304.html?noredirect=on

Nowhere in thje article does he deny the existence of Comfort Women. He states that he himself was not aware. No J-govt official has denied the existence of the Comfort Women System. However many hacve denied the false narrative that "200,000 women were kidnapped by Japanese troops" as have several South Korean scholars. Do not confuse the two.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

thanks again ossanamerica,

i'm not arguing by the way, just trying to learn about the topic.

to me, the us army report isn't evidence in itself, it's a report of claims made, which would become a small part of the evidence as a whole. the wording is hardly neutral either, which makes it suspect.

nakasone and others deny coercion to comfort women.

part of what i'm trying to learn is if the women were there willingly or not. and then, what actually happened.

do you happen to know of any reputable accounts?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Wrong dee. The US Army Report No.49 was written by the US military in 1944 in the midst of fighting a vicious war with Japan, meaning anything that could be used against Japan would be noted. Your argument that it is "not neutral" is ridiculous. It was written by Japan's enemy at the time.

Nice trolling.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

ossan, i don't understand your strange hostility. how am i trolling?

do you have a strong opinion on this issue that is clouding your interaction?

i don't have any opinion, i am simply trying to learn more. i want to read accounts from a variety of sources. thank you for the one you shared. as you say, it's not very reliable as it is written by an enemy party, but still worth reading. again, if you have any others, i'd love to read them.
