" TOKYO (Reuters) - Long-time allies "

When the Soviet Union collapsed, Bill Clinton said that from that moment on, Japan would be the United States' number one enemy. And so it was done.

United States got what it wanted !

@udondashi,

Don't put much weight on anything said by a pot smoking womanizing one term failure of an impeached president who bent over backwards to get China accepted by the WTO. Seriously.

For better or worse "dialog" and nukes are the only weapons USA and Japan have to deploy against China and Russia these days.

Your memory is failing you.

in other words fallen world hegemon is pushing unsovereign Japan in position against Russia and China in name of its own interests.

who cant clearly see that must or blind or completely clueless.

i suggest that USA to take proper care about our business at home and leave up to Asian countries to decide freely how to live next to each other cooperate and do business.or they want to ignite new war in this region too as they did in unlucky Ukraine?

china and Russia are our neighbours. Friends

Really !? look what Russia has done to its neighbours - invaded them & killed their citizens

7 ( +16 / -9 )

Great News! Stay strong against China! The western world and fellow eastern allies must hold against the evil Chinese dragon.

7 ( +15 / -8 )

china and Russia are our neighbours. Trade partners. Friends.

How bizarre that you think Russia is Japans friend when it wont even return Japanese territory seized after WWI while America has returned all territory surrendered to it.

China covets Japanese territory in the Senkaku's, so I hardly call that a friendly posture.

China and Russia are positioning themselves to be Japan's future enemies. They are not friendly to Japan. Some people are clearly delusional.

Japan and America have moved forward in partnership and alliance while Japans largest "neighbors" prefer confrontation and view Japan as a future serf nation.

Japan and the US have partnerships on so many levels and now semi-conductors is one more. China is run by evil people as is Russia. Both lie to their own people and persecute them in so many ways. Both try to fully control information to their people to cover up their faults and the truth. Not nations that well informed people want to be close to. Japan is smart enough to see that and act accordingly.

Russia's economy is in top shape, with a very high ruble!. G7 economies are sinking badly!

the selfish sanctions fire back to the G7!! G7 try to hide their debts and inflation by using Putin as a scapegoat. it not gonna works!

-11 ( +6 / -17 )

Quit urging and start legislating. That's your job.

The value of the Ruble is artificial due to severe restrictions on holdings of foreign currencies and a deliberate shortage of Rubles designed to drive their value up. That is all for show, and you fell for their Maskarova. The Russian GDP is declining. Many factories are closed for lack of technical inputs. Russian tank plants are shut. Russian military vehicles can't be maintained because they mostly use engines from Cummins or Caterpillar. Maintenance and repair parts are not available, nor are new tires, forcing Russian forces to use commercial trucks to move troops and supplies. Russian merchant ships cannot get maintenance and repair parts for their engines and other systems sourced from the west. They are cannibalizing their Boeing and Airbus airliners to keep the remainder flying but as more airplanes break or go into schedule maintenance more airplanes will be taken out of service to keep the decreasing remainder flying. Not much better for the few Russian made airliners because they all use western engines, avionics and other subsystems for which parts and replacements are no longer available and for which there are no Russian made substitutes. Auto factories are close for lack of components. Military factories are cannibalizing household appliances for semiconductors as new semiconductors are unavailable. Lack of necessary oil drilling, refining and distribution components from the western firms that are the only sources of these components will soon start to degrade oil and gas production reducing output slowly but surely. By Christmas the Russia economy won't look so rosy.

Yeah...I'm putting all my money on the Rouble .....buying "magic beans " with profits.

Have you seen what those two govts say about Japan? They are vile. A Chinese reporter who was upset by Abe's murder and showed it on TV was called out by Chinese nationalist millions of times, until she committed suicide. Just for showing humanity about an unnecessary death. The CCP censors any content on their internet, usually within 5 minutes, but in this case they did nothing. That means the CCP agreed with it.

Vile!

China isn't the friend of any nation. They are xenophobic AND the CCP govt pushes that stance in Mandarin, constantly. The old "us vs them" political tool.

US and Japan launch economic dialogue aimed at pushing back against China:

It is habitual.

Whenever US & Japan get together for anything, the primary concern is how to contain to encapsulate China further, tighter.

They appear to be too free, having nothing better to do..

Judging from history, it’s never a good sign when the Defense Ministry assumes responsibility for communications concerning certain matters in the place of the Foreign Ministry.

Action is the most powerful language, said the Chinese Defense Ministry on Thursday as its spokesperson stressed the sensitivity of the Taiwan question again after China issued six warnings against US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan island over the past few days.

The frequency of Chinese warnings and the remarks different departments use fully demonstrate China’s determination to take any necessary military measures to counter US provocations and safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, analysts said.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will not tolerate any “Taiwan independence” moves or interference from external forces, and will resolutely stop such attempts, Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Defense Ministry, said at Thursday’s press briefing.

The root cause of a turbulent Taiwan Straits is the collusion between “Taiwan independence” forces and external interfering forces, Wu said, urging relevant parties to learn to adapt to the new reality (PLA operations near the Straits), to reflect on their own deeds and “most importantly, to pull back from the brink.”

Though Wu was responding to a question about PLA operations on the Taiwan Straits, analysts interpreted Wu’s words as another stern warning against the US government and some US politicians who are pushing Pelosi’s possible visit to Taiwan island.

The US should not underestimate the crisis and possible disastrous results it will bring to the Taiwan Straits if Pelosi ultimately makes the trip, experts said. On edge of the cliff for bilateral relations, if the US does not pull back but keeps challenging the guardrail, the price will be beyond US capabilities to pay.

It’s an interesting historical lesson in the use of the phrase yanzhen yidai, which literally means “streamlining army formation to wait for the enemy” and has very seldom been used in the diplomatic context. It more accurately translates into modern American English as “Fk around and find out”, such as when Zhou Enlai warned the USA not to cross the 38th Parallel prior to the Chinese intervention in the Korean War.

In other words, the Chinese are no more bluffing over Taiwan than the Russians were bluffing over Ukraine.

They have to try something. China and Russia are both in invasion mode, so anything to slow them down is worth looking at.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

You can't do anything if you can't secure resources. Japan is poor in exploitable resources and has a vulnerable shipping lane. China and Russia can literally cut any shipping lane to Japan in case of a war in Taiwan. The US initiated this bogus meeting with two goals in mind with Japan:

- Scoring some diplomatic wins (empty) for Biden administration

- Draining any residual economic value of Japan before the island becomes as poor as Puerto Rico once the conflict in Taiwan breaks out. Japan will be put into the frontline and get hit by Chinese-Russian-North Korean missiles.

-10 ( +0 / -10 )

The world would be a better, safer place for all humakind if there were no Russia (under Putin) and China (under CCP). No pandemic, no economic crisis. No civilians getting blown to bits.

The world has polarized into democracies and autocracies. China and Russia will go down in history as evil empires.

@Septim Dynasty

Japan is not Europe, no one dares to provoke war in this region without Japan approval, or Japan would join the other side, which means automatic lose of the provoker

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Longtime allies

That's BS

The USA is not even 250 yrs old as a country and 77 years ago they nuked Japan twice

Does that seem like longtime allies to you ?

I think Japan should aquire the capabilities to protect itself , but however Japan involving it's self in other nations conflicts and trying to play a leading role as a force in the Asia-Pacific region isn't going to go well

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

@Seth M

Japan is not Europe no one dares to provoke war in this region without Japan approval

That is totally incorrect and absolutely humorous.

You got it backwards !

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

The term "long-time allies" is correct, at least to anyone who knows history.

The United States and Japan have had relations for 168 years. Out of which the two nations were bitter enemies for 4 years (1941-1945). The US and Japan have been allies far far longer than enemies.

The 150 year anniversary celebration was back in 2004.

was expected to agree on joint research for next-generation semiconductors to establish a secure source of the vital components.

Have to prepare for any eventuality

Whenever US & Japan get together for anything, the primary concern is how to contain to encapsulate China further, tighter.

Sigh. If China did not make grossly illegal claims of territorial sovereignty over international waters, stopped making territorial claims on other nation's sovereign territories, stopped threatening to conquer Taiwan while engaging in genocide against the Tibetans and Uyghurs and maybe most importantly stopped the unprecedented cyber theft of other nations intellectual property there would be no fear of China and no reason for nations to see to confront China and attempt to contain her. China does not even make the slightest attempt to compete honestly in this world. That cannot go unchallenged.

The United States and Japan have had relations for 168 years. Out of which the two nations were bitter enemies for 4 years (1941-1945). The US and Japan have been allies far far longer than enemies.

That enmity was longer than four years. As far back as the 1920s the US began to believe a war with Japan was inevitable. A lot of the technologies that won WWII were first thought of in the late 1920s and developed all through the 1930s. The tactics for use of aircraft carriers, amphibious warfare and less well known but equally important technologies such as compact high powered 650psi steam plants for ships and the techniques for underway replenishment of fuel, ammunition and solid stores were essential for the kinds of long range naval operations the US knew would be required to push Japan out of the Pacific. The US supported China all through the Japanese invasion and colonization of Manchuria. You might recall the sinking of USS Panay on the Yangtze River in 1937. The US wanted to go to war with Japan over that but didn't yet have the necessary forces to do so. Madame Chiang made here weekly radio address to the US in southern accented English drumming up support for China, and generating enmity towards Japan. The American Volunteer Group, aka the Flying Tigers, entered China in April 1941, well before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

It is well proven that Ukraine is the one killing citizens, even their own.

Over the last 8 years, Ukraine military has been shelling the Russian speaking regions of Donbass resulting in the loss of more than 14,000 civilian lives. And, people wonder why Russia has gone in to do a clean up in the most corrupt country in Europe.

no, it has not been well proven.

The only people who believe this rubbish are Russian sympathisers & Putin fanboys.

So Russian bombing of the cities and innocent people in this same region = cleanup? Hmmm. Not a very friendly cleaner.

economic dialogue to push back against China, Russia

"Push back"? Pretty ironic choice of words, seeing that the Western neolibs-neocons are doing the pushing, with their endless proxy wars in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Ukraine, and now once again Serbia.

I am getting so tired of this warmongering. Of course, weapons manufacturers are smiling.
