No, never should the people of Japan become a vassal state.

I suggest this whole US Japan partnership be clearly defined.

Japan should no longer be a US forward base.

The J tax payer at the whim of US Asia–Pacific regional foreign policies.

Taiwan, the South China Sea shipping routes/lanes are of major concern to Global/US economic interests.

It is time Japan tax payer is fully involved.

Time for change

In one sentence: Buy more our weapons.

The US was not thinking in the future when they forced Japan to not have an army.... they saw their mistake when the Korean Peninsula war erupted, but it was too late.

Then since 1955 the US has been trying to change the same constitution they imposed... and Japan has been slowly complying to that pressure (taking almost 70 years and counting).

The funny thing is that, the Left parties defends something that "the capitalist" imposed.

.... as in everywhere though, but as the songs go ♬...clowns to the left, jokers to the right, here I am stcuk in the middle with you... ♬

Japan's SDF is no pushover, they are ranked 4th in the world behind the United States, China, and Russia.

Although Russia is bogged down in never-ending war and does not look too strong now.

With the backing of the United States and other alliances with other countries, Japan in pretty good shape.

Japan can defend herself adequately.

Maybe just needs a little fine tuning.

Armitage looks like he's finally going to get his JSDF "boots on the ground". He's been asking for it since 2003.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The aims outlined by Nye and Armitage are completely in line with what Macarthur and company had in mind when they occupied and networked in Japan for seven years after the war.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

To make joint operational decisions more seamless, perhaps all US forces should be under Japanese overall command?

Just a thought.

Yes true Japan has much war experience however they are seriously lacking in actual military personel which is definitely a major concern

So no i disagree Japan presently does not have adequate active military personnel to defend itself without the assistance of the US military.

Until Japan expands its capabilities independently its still in a pickle !

This whole carrot dangling in the face of Japan by the USA government doesn't look good

Alliances yes of course...but don't rely on the US military too much and with mr Trump on the way who knows what might happen to regional security.

Lets no mention Mc Arthur in all this

That's just insulting to japan and Sth Korea

Part of SDF who collectively worship Yasukuni shrine seem to want the war.

And Japan's defense ministry has hostility to antiwar activity, has even plans that wipe out resistant feeling to the war or un-warlike thought and lead public the war by using such as SNS or influencers.

Japan is in new pre-war.

Please provide sources for these assertions.

Chinese propaganda. The truth?

"China is preparing for a conflict with the United States by taking steps that include military reforms and drills, a stockpiling of oil and food, increased spying and military appointments."

Well Geeeze mr Ossan Thankyou for stating the obvious

And why might you think China is doing that

Lets be realistic here and tell the whole story

Time for japan to do exactly what japan wants to do !

Enough said !

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

A new structure, basically, both forces under a single, total command. The Americans are not going to allow their forces to be under the command of another country, so you know the result? So you know the consequences? Get pulled/involved/ etc/etc.. into their wars/conflicts, ie, military vassal, true vassal, doing their fighting.

Exactly, Japan should instead try to repair its relation with Russia.

I'll wager Japan does not want to be a criminal state like the dictatorship brigade. They might let you over for the night, but you wouldn't be able to sleep very well with the knives constantly out.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Japan isn’t stupid enough to pander to Russia. Ukraine gave up their nukes and Russia repaid by invading them in a terroristic war. Pandering to Russia will get other countries more of the same.

Russia has made themselves the enemy.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Exactly, Japan should instead try to repair its relation with Russia.

Agreed and also repair with China relationship

I really don't want to see japan get drawn into all the conflicts the USA is constantly in

Unfortunately japan needs mandatory enlistment training much like south Korea does and a much larger military personel presence

Might as well get those nukes as well since you will be going toe to toe with China and Russia.

I agree. Now, Japan is allied with a country (USA) that is actively participating in a genocide.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

It's all one big hypocritical, dysfunctional mess all round, alright, but you have to be seriously delusional to imagine China, Russia and North Korea are in any way on the side of human freedom of thought and expression and realisation of potential. A world where they are universalised is a prison.

Just a thought.

During the RIMPAC 88 exercise our ship, USS Sacramento, was assigned to support a JMSDF task force and placed under the operational command of a Japanese Rear Admiral. Just saying ..................

Exactly, Japan should instead try to repair its relation with Russia.

Agreed and also repair with China relationship

Both countries but especially China would make Japan into tributary states much as the Ryukyu Kingdom was a tributary state of China allowed to trade only with those nations China allowed it to trade with. You China supporters forget or chose to ignore that the Chinese view of the region is with China basically owning the states that surround her and dictating to them the terms of their existence, just as it did in the centuries before the arrival of the European colonial powers. China wants to be the Middle Kingdom again.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Well Geeeze mr Ossan Thankyou for stating the obvious

Lets be realistic here and tell the whole story

The whole story? China is preparing to try to invade Taiwan and knows it will have to fight the US and her allies to do so. For the past seven decades nobody in the region thought China had a reasonable chance of taking Taiwan by force. In the past decade however that began to change as China rapidly increased the size and quality of her military. Today there are elements within the US and allied nation's governments who are convinced China has already made a firm decision to attack Taiwan, feels they can defeat the US and her allies and that the attack will happen very soon.

Never? It's already been with US Forces Korea.

You seem to imagine US and Allied forces being separated and the US just receiving orders. That is not the case.
