They may have access to the Russian or Chinese equivalents of GPS for all we know.

Again, same story

No, not if DPRK has access to their military grade signals. Those are certainly capable of providing navigational guidance to ICBMs.

@Desert Tortoise

What I am saying is that the speed and altitude limits you cite only apply to the civil GPS signal.

Since the civilian GPS signal is the only signal that North Korea has access to, my statement remains valid.

"civilian GPS signals don't work at supersonic speed."

They may have access to the Russian or Chinese equivalents of GPS for all we know.

Again, same story.

Even with all the cyberhacking technology that apparently disabled the Ukrainian Air Force, even with all the missiles, it's bogging down to an urban guerilla war, which is very frustrating for the Russian ground troops.

Both Russian and Ukrainian ground based air defenses have made it difficult for either air force to venture over the territory of their enemy and survive. The Russians launch long range missiles from positions well inside Russia, even as far away as the Caspian Sea, so their launch platforms do not risk being shot down. Russian Frontal Aviation is not providing close air support to their troops because western supplied missiles the Ukrainians operate have made it a suicide mission. The Ukraine has shot down a great many Russian missiles too.

For Ukraine, they lack modern EW to deal with Russian radars and there is a lack of spares forcing them to use their air force sparingly. Recently however they have started using HARM with some success to take down Russian radars from a distance (going against something like an S-400 battery with a HARM takes a lot of courage as the pilot has to come well inside the range of the S-400 to attack it) and their drones have been successful operating inside Russian air defenses, much to their surprise. The US Congress is funding training Ukrainian pilots on US made fighters so that is coming in the near future.

So you think North Korea has access to US military GPS signal?

You made a blanket statement that GPS does not work at speeds above 1000 knots or above a certain altitude and thus GPS signals were not used by ballistic missiles. The implication in your post was that this was true across the board in all cases. What I am saying is that the speed and altitude limits you cite only apply to the civil GPS signal.

I have no idea what kind of guidance DPRK ballistic missiles use. They may have access to the Russian or Chinese equivalents of GPS for all we know. American ICBMs use celestial nav to refine their positions and compensate for inertial nav drift.

@Desert Tortoise

That only applies to the civilian GPS signal

So you think North Korea has access to US military GPS signal?

so some other nation cannot use the US civil GPS signal for navigation and targeting of their ICBMs.

Including North Korea. So what I have said is entirely true; North Koreans are navigating their ICBMs with gyroscope inertial navigation only.

Fatboy Kim is on the top of the heap in his small little kingdom with 20 Mio+ slaves, has everything he needs or wants. Why risking all that?

An analogous argument could have been made regarding Vladimir Putin in January 2022. Things were looking good for the Russian economy and the total fertility rate was on the rise, then he invaded Ukraine. In his mind Ukraine doesn't exist as a separate country but is part of Russia. Russia's GDP has already been reduced to its 2018 value and falling, and there is no assurance Russia will prevail over Ukraine. Kim the Fat could have a similar brain fart, underestimate the risks, over estimate his military and choose to invade the rest of what he sees as rightfully his, South Korea.

Even with all the cyberhacking technology that apparently disabled the Ukrainian Air Force, even with all the missiles, it's bogging down to an urban guerilla war, which is very frustrating for the Russian ground troops. even if Russia does win this, it's already cost them many lives, material, resources, money. Never mind the economic sanctions the UN slapped on them. There are antiwar protests in Russia, and winters are harsh in that part of the world. It's going to be tough for them.

NK is very much the same way geographically, and if Fat Kimbo really values being the poobah that he is, he will do nothing to SK - but he'll be shooting off his mouth as usual.

In GPS technology, the term "CoCom Limits" also refers to a limit placed on GPS tracking devices that disables tracking when the device calculates that it is moving faster than 1,000 knots (1,900 km/h; 1,200 mph) at an altitude higher than 18,000 m (59,000 ft).[3] This was intended to prevent the use of GPS in intercontinental ballistic missile-like applications.

That only applies to the civilian GPS signal so some other nation cannot use the US civil GPS signal for navigation and targeting of their ICBMs. The military GPS signal has no such limitations.

The THAAD battery deployed to South Korea is owned and operated by the US Army, not ROK forces. To date South Korea has not expressed an interest in buying their own THAAD batteries.

Yoon's campaign pledge was to buy and operate Korea's own THAAD battery. So when Yoon came into office, he asked the military if he should buy THAAD for them but the Korean military turned Yoon's proposal down, they didn't need THAAD because of L-SAM.

Supersonic speed has no effect on GPS.

The Norks developed their missiles from the SCUD. It is largely an in house effort.

Not the ICBMs.

*North Korea’s success in testing an intercontinental ballistic missile that appears able to reach the United States was made possible by black-market purchases of powerful rocket engines probably from a Ukrainian factory with historical ties to Russia’s missile program, according to an expert analysis being published Monday and classified assessments by American intelligence agencies.*

DPRKs initial missile technology came from Egypt in the form of left over Soviet SCUD missiles the Egytians sent to them. The Norks developed their missiles from the SCUD. It is largely an in house effort. It might surprise many here but DPRK is able to send students to some of the best universities around the world except those in the US. Remember his majesty Kim the Fat is Swiss educated. These students bring the latest technical knowledge home with them and that knowledge informs both their ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.

Ballistic missiles don't use GPS, civilian GPS signals don't work at supersonic speed. Instead, pretty much all ballistic missiles are using gyroscope inertial navigation.

I don't know about Chinese or North Korean ballistic missiles but your statement is grossly untrue. Supersonic speed has no effect on GPS. Supersonic aircraft use it for navigating. ICBMs use celestial nav while in space to refine their position to compensate for INS drift, but you will find a lot of very supersonic atmospheric missiles, ballistic and otherwise that use GPS.

Yoon is free to purchase more THAAD units for increasing deployments, to join a trilateral alliance with Japan and the US and to participate in a global defensive missile shield. The decision is Yoon's not China's.

The THAAD battery deployed to South Korea is owned and operated by the US Army, not ROK forces. To date South Korea has not expressed an interest in buying their own THAAD batteries. They may ask the US to send more US Army THAAD batteries to South Korea. It would be a joint US-South Korean decision possibly in consultation with Japan.

The weak link between USA, Japan and South Korea is = South Korea!!

A country which can switch sides or be neutral in a major conflict.

A country which was willing to make promises to Beijing China under Moon Korean administration.

A country which made promises to Japan to normalize relations, signed agreements as Final and Irreversible, just to back away under a different Skorean administration.

SKorea changes like the wind, yesterday was with China and making promises to them, today is making promises to the American, and tomorrow promises to Japan if you apologies, pay compensation, give in to all Korean demands at all times!

@Peter14

China has done little to curb North Korean development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons

I can certify China did nothing to help out North Korean nuke and ballistic missile development programs. Why? Because those same North Korean nuclear missiles could be launched toward Beijing, Chinese know North Korea well enough to not trust North Korea. Instead, North Korea's ballistic missile program's help came from Ukraine/Russia and nukes from Pakistan.

@Yrral

 depends on who GPS guidance system they are using

Lil Kim do not even know the GPS Coordinates,of the US,he will probably confused Washington state with Washington DC

@Saori What is your obsession with the US!! Are you on the CCP pay roll you posted the same comment on another topic. You keep pointing out overdose deaths one would think you would be applauding it rather than bring it to light. Check your back yard and make sure its clean which I doubt. Go back and look at your thumbs down that right there will tell you what people think about your post which are totally insane!

US insanity abounds (100,000 overdose deaths in 12 month cycle, race baiting, high homicide, gender confusion at home - to inciting wars and sowing divisions abroad).

Taiwan issue doesn’t concern America nor Japan.

Last year the US fled Afghanistan - just like leaving Vietnam. Mass deaths and the graves of many.

Iraq and lies that enabled al-Qaeda and then ISIS to enter the vacuum. Irony being Iran is now firmly entrenched in Iraq while America is on the periphery.

The Sahel region deteriorated after the Libya debacle and the usual failed state followed by mass immigration.

The border of America? No, need internal and external chao

Ossan,what day will China invade,in no way is China risking it trade surplus with the US,I saw a Chinese, ball that float in the air,aided by the palm of your hands,it caught my attention

Beijing says the THAAD radar can penetrate its territory and has called on Yoon to honor assurances made by his predecessor to not to increase THAAD deployments, participate in a U.S.-led global missile shield or create a trilateral military alliance involving Japan.

Any assurances made by Yoon's predecessor and not made into a treaty are not binding on any leader that comes after him. Yoon is free to purchase more THAAD units for increasing deployments, to join a trilateral alliance with Japan and the US and to participate in a global defensive missile shield. The decision is Yoon's not China's.

China should act as a good global citizen, without demands on others, without coercion to manipulate others and without military bullying. China has no natural enemies with designs on invading or conquering it. It does have border disputes with all of it's neighbors, but with compromise these can be worked out with everyone if they choose a non violent way forward.

China has done little to curb North Korean development of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons, yet it complains when nations threatened by North Korea take appropriate defensive measures that could also work in the event China ever chose to attack Japan or South Korea or US forces in the region. If China had done more to discourage North Korean ambitions, there would be less reason for defensive measures to be taken in the region.

China, much like Russia, expects nations to take no action when threatened by others as it may dilute or blunt their capacity to take offensive measures of their own. Such concerns do not register and are completely illogical in any event.

North Korea often talks of destroying others and that means others must take precautions for their defense against such threats, given the NK capacity in long range ballistic missiles to carry out some of its threats. No point in asking SK not to have THAAD unless it first gets NK to dismantle its nuclear arsenal. Until then SK will defend itself in the best possible way, and they have every right to do so without concern of what China wants.

There has never been a time since 1950 when a strong military alliance between the US-JPN-SK was necessary. If China invades Taiwan, which it will, and a direct conflict between China and the US breaks out, it's a good bet that Kim will take that opportunity to fulfill his Grandfather and Father's goals as described in the preamble to the NK Constitution- to unify the Korean Penninsula under the Kim regime.

Under the Yoon administration, SK is facing the reality that China was NK's supporter in 1950 killing SKorean troops, and they are behind NKorea's very existence.
