urged Japan and South Korea to speak out against China's treatment of minority Muslims
If anyone should be speaking out for Muslims in China, it should be fellow Muslims.
There is total silence and a lack of leadership from that part of the world.
Why "urge" Japan to do this?

The big difference between Japan and South Korea in this regard is that while both nations aim to preserve the economic benefit of trade with China, like every other country in the world, Japan's strategic alliance with the US is unquestionable as they participate with other US allies Australia, India in joint exercises aimed at establishing FON. And Japan will not do anything to damage or disrupt the US-JPN-SK alliance designed to counter North Korean aggression. In contrast South Korea refuses to join US Allies in FON exercises, and uses a national anti-Japan agenda to weaken and disrupt the US-JPN-SK alliance. South Korea has chosen to be a vassal state of China, which fought on North Korea's side in the Korean war.

I Agree with Ossan and Gary
South Korea will only jump in or participate if they are under threat or attack. S. Korea will not join if Japan gets attacked or if U.S. Assets gets attacked.
East Asia alliance is always the U.S. And Japan.
South Korea not part of the Quad alliance another clue they will not join.
South Korea doesn't even want to pay for U.S. Troops station there, Japan pays 3x more for many decades more.
I'm in favor of helping the U.S. If they get attacked or hit!
I'm not in favor of U.S. Attacking China and expecting Japan to be the shield to take all the damage and hits while your a Pacific Ocean away safe.
Decisions should be made together! ! This is Japan's backyard, not far away land.

You are wrong. In March 2016 Japan changed it's laws so that the JSDF can aid and support USFJ.
"Marking a historic change in Japan’s pacifist postwar defense posture, two contentious security laws took effect Tuesday that will allow Tokyo to exercise its right to collective self-defense without breaking the Constitution."

As for Vietnam, Japan was restrained by their constitution from sending troops to Vietnam.
South Korea was not, they sent troops and left behind this legacy,

Under the Trump administration yes. But the United States is coming back under new leadership.

Not so easy when you're next-door neighbors, besides, the U.S. has lost all credibility in dictating to other nations about human rights.

Only until they elect another Trump. Which is why any world leader that does not actively diversify their country's economy away from Americas is being irresponsible, as it's not a matter of if, but when. They've had three absolute dud Republicans in a row - two Bushes and a Trump - and they keep electing them. At this point it's just irresponsible.

The US has lost its moral high ground to criticize other countries.

You all know the Japanese refrain from criticizing others in public.
Knapper asking Japan to speak out is akin to asking the average Japanese to get on a soap box in Shibuya Hachiko square and pontificate and opine. Not going to happen.

While US urges Japan, South Korea to speak out on China, Kissinger urges Biden to restore communication with China. However, the communication needs to be based on sincerity, respect and equality. It must be mutual..

comments here laughable.

mutual defence treaty between rok and us

Korea and Japan are in different shoes at the moment, as Xi's state visit to Seoul is immanent.
