Despite Japan's often memory loss, Japanese are east Asian and to expect Ukraine to think otherwise is asking way to much.

Well, wasn't there this expression called 'honorable whites'?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

How many countries can you name in 34 sec and still say thank you in addition?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That's Ukraine.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

The gratitude from a government that supports neo-Nazism is not needed..

Doesn't everyone know that the President of Ukraine is Jewish already? There's no Nazis in Ukraine any more than there are Nazis in Russia. Let's not forget that Nazis killed 25M Russians in WW2. There are violent nationalists in Russia, however. 1 of them is their leader. He's the best argument for term limit for political govt service in every country.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Imagine being so up your own backside that you decide to ask the Ukrainian government to clarify why you were not thanked.

The country is fighting for its very existence.

Japan lacks any sense of decency on this matter and by protesting is just scoring yet another PR home goal.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

with Japan's top diplomat saying Tuesday the omission was a result of Tokyo not providing lethal weapons.

I fully acknowledge this could entirely be hearsay without any backing, so I don't want to jump to conclusions.

However, if that IS true, that is ridiculous. Food, medicine, refugee assistance, those are the things that should be thanked above weapons. I am not surprised for a second at their position, but it remains every bit absurd.

At the same time, I give kudos to countries like Japan or China for actually giving the people suffering what they need, not the government what they demand. It is pretty difficult for medicine or blankets to be misallocated, unless they start selling them to try to buy weapons.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

ahhh, the amount of butt hurt that must have done

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Sure says a lot about Zelensky and the UKR.

Beggars should not be choosers.

Japan should have been more careful in choosing sides.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Japan's too difficult to deal with and constantly backpeddling sidestepping and dithering.

Other nations don't quite know how to deal with Japan .

Japan's definitely making an effort to be a team player but unfortunately shoots itself in the foot always.

It's an ongoing familiar pattern that Japan keeps getting into with Other nations.

Double standards never did anyone any good.

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

Yasha33,

200% how is that even possible?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

@ Mr Kipling

Maybe it is the sad truth that Japan is becoming more and more irrelevant in the world.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

@Antiquesaving

South Korea knows that the second a war between NATO and Russia starts North Korea is coming across the DMZ.

Kim Jong Un isn't suicidal. The moment North Korean troops cross the DMZ is the day the Korean unification finally happens. And Kim insists that he needs nukes to deter the Southern invasion.

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

To tell how they really feel about Japan… they compared Japan’s Emperor to Hitler while they killed 60% of the Jews of their own country during WW 2, they forgot to mention Japan in their video… Japan is 200% behind helping Ukrainian.. What did I miss?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Dear Japan, stop meddling in such matters just for indulge US decadent whims..

The gratitude from a government that supports neo-Nazism is not needed..

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Socrates, when have Japan done something for their own

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

It's fair. Even to an average Japanese like myself and to my regret, Japan hasn't done much for Ukraine at all.

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

LOFL! "We should be at the top of the list just because we are so totally awesome. Must be a mistake."

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

The US is buying Russian oil.

Some parts of the US were buying oil and refined oil products from Russia - I think Hawaii was one of them, but even at peak use, it was 8% of all US oil purchases in 2021. I looked it up.

In 2021, US$30.76 Billion in total (all goods/services) was imported from Russia to the USA. A little over half was oil and refined oil products. Biden has stopped that with an executive order last month. It will take some time for already shipped products to arrive and be off-loaded. No new purchases allowed.

The US is dependent on Russia for some other things too. Steel, Iron, fertilizer, and about 16% of the uranium used in US nuclear reactors. Most of that comes from other countries like Canada and Kazakhstan. The US also mines some uranium. I bet this is purely a total cost calculation choice. Having multiple suppliers means that any 1 supplier can't cut the spigot off.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Runners, nobody ever won a war, held up in fox hole like Ukraine,US soldiers are offensive machine by nature, always on the offensive, when Ukraine take the battle to Russian cities, you will see a change in the Russian citizen, when they get a taste of their own medicine

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

It's like a team that just won. The owner wants to thank all the players that contributed to the game. Except for the player that stayed behind in the locker room hiding.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Smith, Ukrainian think the world owe them nothing, Japanese buy US weapons, not because they need them, just put money in US defense contractors pockets, Ukrainian collaborators traitors are the reasons, they in the situation, with Russian ,if anybody part of the blame,it Ukraine, for not holding their Ukrainian traitors accountable

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

So, a non-story

Someone better tell the Japanese media, cause they wrote a story.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Someone will use this as an excuse to propose involving the SDF in the conflict.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Well, absolutely nothing to be upset over, unless the whole reason they did it was for recognition and to be thanked. And they WERE thanked for the defensive equipment and aid. So, a non-story.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Beggars cannot be choosy,

1 ( +4 / -3 )

This is a Russian civil war. Japan should not get involved.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Zelensky and Ukraine think that they are on top of the world, saving the world from Evil Russia.

Zelensky think that his status now equal to All leaders of the world , he looks down on Japan , small and weak in military power , that why they made that video ,also mentioned Pear harbor attack in praising US .

in general , they do not understanding Japanese at all .

my humble opinion .

4 ( +8 / -4 )

Japan was not among the nations Ukraine thanked in a social media video highlighting support it has received in its fight against Russia

Can Zelenskyy get any more pathetic? We will never know the extent to which Ukraines attack on their own citizens would have been had Putin not invaded to stop it

3 ( +8 / -5 )

Didn't the J-Gov protest over Russia calling it an "unfriendly" country??? I don't think you can have it both ways in this conflict. Stay buddies with Russia, but expect Ukraine to kiss your ass for your cans of tuna, vests and masks. Thats the J-Gov for ya though. Sit on the fence, cater to a xenophobic voter base and watch the world burn.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

South Korea is smart, they don't care about the war, only 60 out of 300 members of their Parliament even showed up for Zelensky's speech.

Why don't they care?

Because unlike most of the armchair warriors here and on other sites, South Korea knows that the second a war between NATO and Russia starts North Korea is coming across the DMZ.

And we here in Tokyo will be getting missiles dropping on us!

There is no way North Korea won't take advantage of USA forces fighting a major war with Russia.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Over the past 10 years, of all resettled refugees 55% went to the United States of America (575,600), 20% to Canada (210,600) and 11% to Australia (114,500).

https://www.redcross.org.au/act/help-refugees/refugee-facts/

There you go Canada went 96,000 better than Australia but the US was better than Canada and Australia combined. Silver medal to Canada. Congrats. Only a Bronze medal for Australia.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Why are they suddenly thankful at this moment?

Not as thanks to those who have.

rather to publicly shame those who have not met their required contributions into doing so?

that’s why this article title is about who wasn’t thanked (Japan) not who was.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Number 73,000 was as of May 2021

Yay for Canada. They helped out. You want a medal for that?

What is your point? That Canada is a great and generous nation? Just one of many.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

It asked Egypt for arms and puts their name on a list of nations that sent arms. Yet you say they didnt. I choose to believe Ukraine and not you.

Doesn't surprise me when you counter 2021 refugee number with those from 2016 in a bizarre attempt to make a point!

I guess you don't know the years increase in number 2016 2017 2018 and so on.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Guess all the sanctions and financial aid was for nothing. Hundreds of our companies just lost all investment in Russia while what we got is higher fuel cost and a weaker yen. We should have stayed neutral. At least then we would have gotten cheap fuel and grain from Russia. Nothing good came out of this whole mess.

Japan can't have it's cake and eat it forever.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Peter14Today  08:14 pm JST

As usual you need better and newer information your source 2016, seriously Don't you get tired of constantly being corrected?

> Canada promised to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2015. Since then, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says over 73,000 of them have settled in this country

https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5947946

Number 73,000 was as of May 2021

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Asked Egypt, it didn't send any, just like Ukraine asked Japan and South Korea both didn't send any.

It asked Egypt for arms and puts their name on a list of nations that sent arms. Yet you say they didnt. I choose to believe Ukraine and not you.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Japan didn’t give enough money to make the thank you list. Meet that 7 billion dollar a month demand you might get some thanks.

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

Way back in 2014 Russia annexed Crimea, and the mass media said it was the first step of Russian invasion of Ukraine. Funny how the media now forgets this prediction.

Since 2014 Ukraine’s leaders have kowtowed to Russia. Not because they love Putin, but because they didn’t want Russian bombs and artillery shells exploding in Ukrainian cities.

Then Zelenskyy was elected. Rather than continue with groveling before Russia he decided to stand up and free Ukraine from Putin’s domination. He was told the risks, that Russia was not going to simply walk away and let Ukraine become fully independent.

To add to this, Zelenskyy began to solicit NATO for membership. He was told point blank that if he pushed to get Ukraine into NATO, Russia would invade. Zelenskyy didn’t listen, and Russia invaded.

And now about one-third of Ukraine has been overrun or leveled, refugees are flooding out, oil and food prices are spiking around the world, and we are as close to WW3 as at anytime during the Cold War.

Europe and America let Russia annex Ukraine in 2014, knowing what was coming up. You could have read these stories here on JT. Yet Europe allowed itself to become dependent on Russian energy. Biden himself allowed a 10-fold increase in Russian energy imports into America. And Zelenskyy put a match to a keg of dynamite after being told very explicitly that it would blow up.

Japan is completely right not to get involved in this train wreck comedy of errors which can only get worse if the West adds more fuel to the fire.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I would say Egypt sent weapons.

Strange, did you read the article you linked?

Asked Egypt, it didn't send any, just like Ukraine asked Japan and South Korea both didn't send any.

You do have a strange way of, let's say interpretation in a way that would fit in a fantasy novel.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

They did us a favor by omitting Japan.

Yeah it's good it was highlighted Japan didn't provide lethal weaponry

Only one problem, Egypt and as far as I can tell Azerbaijan haven't given any military aid but were part of the 31 countries.

So it doesn't seem to be an exclusive list for European states. Ukraine is not so far accountable for its selection criteria. Likewise oddly missing is Switzerland whose financial power is the key to successful economic sanctions.

Another point I don't get is timing. This war is still underway, with no end in sight. Why are they suddenly thankful at this moment?

BTW, Japan supplied bulletproof vests and medicine/medical equipment, all very critical items for "military" operations. Together with its sanction measures, Japan's contributions are not negligible.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Being left out could be a "GOOD THING"!

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Emperor Hirohito was not tried for war crimes, US supported him after the war as spiritual leader . . . the generals were the military leaders tried for and convicted of war crimes . . . .

Only one problem, Egypt and as far as I can tell Azerbaijan haven't given any military aid but were part of the 31 countries.

Three Azerbaijani MiG-29 have been destroyed inside Ukraine. Perhaps they were donated?

"The Ukrainian Charge d'Affaires in Egypt, Ruslan Nechai, has asked Cairo for weapons, financial support and humanitarian aid as some 1,335 civilians have been killed almost two weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine."

I would say Egypt sent weapons.

When you give you do it because it is the right thing to do and never expect anything in return.

you should expect to be at least not deliberately humiliated.

thanking everyone to exclusion of one doesn't seem odd to many, not that it's unexpected

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

@mat I came across your comment, and have to agree.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

C'mon, Japan took a whopping 20 refugees. Show some respect Ukraine.

-3 ( +9 / -12 )

@Antiquesaving

Canada 73,000 Syrian refugees

Australia 11,300.

Now do the math.

The following table shows the number of refugees who were resettled in 2015 (assisted by UNHCR):

United States of America 52,583 Canada 10,236 Australia 5,211 Norway 2,220 Germany 2,097 Sweden 1,808 United Kingdom 1,768 Finland 964 New Zealand 756 France 700 All others 3,550 Grand total 81,893

You still did not answer what your issue with Whites is and particularly with white people helping whites and others.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Frankly speaking, please return JPY 500,000 I donated.

For a Canadian to complain all the time about white people helping white people makes little sense.

Australia 11,300.

"We received an explanation from the Ukrainian side that the gratitude shown was in the context of thanking countries for their provision of military assistance," Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told a press conference

Only one problem, Egypt and as far as I can tell Azerbaijan haven't given any military aid but were part of the 31 countries.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

This Zelenski guy acts like a high school drama queen

This Putin guy acts like the high school bully.

Just took a look, with the exception of Azerbaijan, Egypt and Turkey, every country is basically White!

So what is your point? African nations are expected to help when troubles happen in Africa.

When trouble happens in the Arab world the expectation it that they help their own.

So when predominantly white nations help a white nation, just what is your problem? The world helps where it can, and it is not restricted to helping only one's own color.

For a Canadian to complain all the time about white people helping white people makes little sense.

Complaining that the help white nations give to other nations not predominantly white is much less, smacks of hypocrisy.

Hitler, Mussolini & Hirohito that’s what I was taught at school. What is Japan upset about? The truth!

Well I was also taught those plus the various groups that aided these 3 and that include OUN UPA , it's leaders Roman Shukhevych, Stepan Bandera, Vasyl Kuk, Dmytro Klyachkivsky.

all of whom are officially national heroes today by law, and the argument that Zelensky is Jewish is irrelevant because the 2015 Ukrainian law makes it a crime to even suggest OUN UPA where anything other than patriots. So his mouth on that subject it as good as taped shut.

4 ( +13 / -9 )

Taiwan and South Korea are also missing on the thanks list while Macedonia (actually North Macedonia for its official name), other small states or relatively unknowns are picked. An interesting criteria.

Personally it doesn't raise my eyebrows, nor offend or disappoint me. Japan will continue to stand with Ukraine and it's a rightful course. It also relates to its own survival.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

-6 ( +11 / -17 )

Irrelevant. The gratitude shown was in the context of thanking countries for their provision of military assistance by a Ukrainian military leader, as Japans Foreign Minister has explained.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Just took a look, with the exception of Azerbaijan, Egypt and Turkey, every country is basically White!

Coming from the country with the largest ethinc Ukrainian population outside Ukraine, all one has to do is ask the native Americans and Asians living near predominantly ethnic Ukrainian areas how things are.

Despite Japan's often memory loss, Japanese are east Asian and to expect Ukraine to think otherwise is asking way to much.

6 ( +17 / -11 )

The Ukrainian government should be smarter. Japan is probably one of the top three countries in the world in terms of individual donations to Ukraine. I think there are many Japanese who are willing to donate after the war is over.

0 ( +16 / -16 )

Same as in Desert Storm. Japan was intentionally left out of the US full page letter of appreciation, because they only provided billions of dollars, and minesweeping operations, but no boots on the ground.

12 ( +16 / -4 )

The EU is sending Russia more than one BILLION euros a DAY for its gas. The US is buying Russian oil.

And they complain about India buying gas from Russia.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

I knew this would happen.

Japan is losing friends faster than making them.

A pawn in the game so to speak.

Yes i agree that Japan is demanding recognition for providing humanitarian aid .

other countries provide humanitarian aid unconditionally and without strings attached.

The USA just accepted 15,000 refugees and gave them 2 year visa.

Not fair to compare USA to Japan so i apologize.

MatToday  05:12 pm JST

Complaining about not being send a ThankYou message is very immature. Japan should be sending aid because it is needed, not because they wank a Ukrainian to give them a bow.

Being Petty is normal for Ukraine, it is so uneducated it probably doesn't know Japan's long term restrictions on not selling offensive weapons but as self-centered as Ukrainians are they probably feel they should be the exception, of right as their own government reps put it *sad to see blonde haired blue-eyed Europeans ( insert whatever after)".

Like the last video Hitler, Mussolini, the late Emperor but not their own official "heroes" of OUN UPA that hailed Hitler as a savoir and cooperated, shhhhhhh not permitted oh and illegal to say what I just did in Ukraine! Ah yes the freedom loving Ukrainians,

Both the Russians and Ukrainians are two groups I wouldn't trust.

-9 ( +15 / -24 )

I hope Japan will rethink its stand on Ukrainian refugees.

Why, how many of them do you think were involved in preparing the video?

16 ( +19 / -3 )

Message not clear enough?

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

This is an indirect humiliation by Ukraine, or could be direct threat to Japan.

-21 ( +9 / -30 )

Kurisuisu...

Japan is continuing to buy Russian oil, gas and seafood from the Russians-might that be the reason for the snub?

The EU is sending Russia more than one BILLION euros a DAY for its gas. The US is buying Russian oil.

That's not the reason...maybe Japan is just irrelevant?

13 ( +22 / -9 )
