While tension lingers between South Korea and Japan over the issue of Korean women forced to serve in Japanese military brothels during World War Two, larger regional issues are pushing this to the background.

Here we go again. Like I said, there can never be an article about China/South Korea and Japan, without a blurb about "lingering bitterness over WW2," "despite lingering hostilities over the comfort women issue," etc.

Come on people, can we have some originality instead of the same cookie cutter reporting?

By the way, I give this 'unity' about six months at best before one or both starts sniping at Japan yet again over some perceived slight.

Interesting table configuration. I wonder if they had to have that custom made or if they had something in storage at the palace from previous three-way summits

Three way? North Korea wants a normal relationship with the world, and Nuces. China wants to dominate the Asian Pacific. Japan wants to brush aside previous actions. Trump wants a legacy. This is a positive step but one that will end badly. Three way never has a happening ending.

The leaders of China, Japan and South Korea met in Tokyo on Wednesday in a powerful gesture of solidarity

by wearing matching suits and ties

Not sure if this qualifies as a 'summit' because Li is not the head of government, unlike Abe and Moon. How come Xi doesn't grace us with his presence?

Abe's smile looks like he is not even giving it a chance.

Abe's smile looks like he is not even giving it a chance.

Exactly.

The smug look on his face speaks volumes.

Until next time a pol goes to Yasukuni.  Or a comfort woman issue arises.  Or a spat over some flyspeck islands.  Or Chinese food poisons someone here.

"The leaders of China, Japan and South Korea met in Tokyo on Wednesday in a powerful gesture of solidarity" This made me laugh.

Someone should tell Abe to stop clenching his fists.

With Trump obviously given (but not taken) the credit for the upcoming meeting, and Kim meeting directly with Moon and Xi beforehand, and Abe left out, the 3 had to meet, at least to show that Japan does exist in the deal. Why did Moon accept Abe proposal about the abductees when his own county is still pushing "hate" Japan issues startnig with the "comfort women". Since Japan does affect their economy as does the USA, and Japan is an ally of the US, they had to at least "pretend".

From all indications N & S Korea will ally with each other and with China "before" associating with the USA or Japan. China is a much greater and immediate threat and the likely dominant economic, political and military power in Asia. It all has to do with demographics. China has more people

Jointly they can eventually "exploit" the USA and Japan for economic and technical gains while building militate strength. (Possibly jointly, now that N. Korea has N power. and missile capability.)

Interestingly during all this "hype" about N Korea, China has installed missles on all of their stolen and developed S China sea islands. So it is obvious that China is playing S & N Korea as a distraction for their covert actions. Which should make us question the sudden "change" in N Korea. It happened right after N Korea obviously obtained nuclear capability and advanced missile technology.

So this meeting of the 3, may be a charade on the part of S Korea and China.

If there is any double cross.., all fingers point to S Korea and China.

N Korea and Japan probably have been "played".
