What a tease and waste of time...

What a surprise...

The 11 other countries should just say "Ok then" and walk away.

12 ( +13 / -1 )

No biggie. Ocean's 11 it is.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

"contingencies"...he knows such big words?

11 ( +14 / -3 )

"While Japan and South Korea would like us to go back into TPP, I don’t like the deal for the United States," he tweeted, before hosting a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

South Korea is not even in the TPP, what's he been smoking?

PM Abe and Trump look like they are really enjoying themselves.

You need a proper night out if you think that looks like fun.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

When is Abe going to get it? No matter how much he kisses Trump's butt, Trump is not going to listen to him about anything. This is getting embarassing for Japan.

Same table, same people, same communication problem?

I remember when this was being formulated and U.S. Congress and Senators had to go into a secure room to even read this thing and were not allowed to take cell phones, etc. in with them (basically anything that could copy or photograph the TPP legislation). Someone leaked some of the contents of the TPP and it basically allows legislation that would permit corporations to (likely after litigation) over-ride the laws of countries they do business in. It also was not clear in many points. I am in no way a Trump fan but I agree with him on this.

I will forego comments on the photo as other posters have pretty much summed it up well (with some humor thrown in too!)

Furthermore, neither Trump and PM Abe are touching alcohol on the table, good example to citizens who want to be responsible and live healthy lifesyle.

Trump despises exercise and lives on a diet of fast food washed down with gallons of Diet Coke. He looks like the last cheeseburger he had isn’t passing through smoothly in this photo.

Ganbare Japan! said  -  Furthermore, neither Trump and PM Abe are touching alcohol on the table, good example to citizens who want to be responsible and live healthy lifesyle.

Abe's already finished his by the looks of it - or is he just blushing. Something Trumpy said?

And - G.J. said  -And people said PM Abe shouldnt be fit to lead Japan in this Summit, where are they now.

Here we are - right here.

Trump: I dont like the TPP its bad, when elected I am taking us out!

Trump: We are looking at going back into the TPP, we want a better deal.

Trump: TPP has Too many contingencies and no way to get out if it doesn’t work.

If your in then great if your out then fine if you want out once your in, as a sovereign nation you give notice you are withdrawing. No such thing as a trade deal you cant get out of if it no longer benefits your country.

Trump is worse than a child at the beach making up its mind on whether the water is too cold to go for a swim.

make up your mind already.

Akie has her eyes on somone afar - with a nice cheesy grin.(wink, wink, say no more)

Akie-chan has her eyes on a nice little plot of land in the distance.

POTUS is dreaming of his night time cheeseburger.

 Down to business after dinner

More like chocolate cake and yet another round of golf

Interesting foto.

Abe has that smily rosy one-drink-too-many glazed look.

Melania has that quietly confident, but geez- am I really here look.

Akie has her eyes on somone afar - with a nice cheesy grin.(wink, wink, say no more)

And MoC the Big T - well he's just hand-over-hand with that blank Homer-ish(simpsons) stare.

The leaders of the capitalist world having a jolly good time - ay?

Japan to import American looking grain rice and Japanese increase eating more long grain lice

Ive heard lice is a worthwhile protein source, but come on, that would have been pretty impressive of Obama to export more of the stuff to Japan.

But it seems to me that working with each country individually would be much better way to make trade deals. only for larger economies like the US, thats why EU member states negotiate trade deals as a whole as they have have much better bargaining powers as a large entity. smaller countries in the TPP dont really have much negotiating power as individuals being in the TPP now gives them that. they should just stand their ground and say that the US need to negotiate with them as the TPP if not , no deal.

Where are the highly paid porn stars? We have two presidents/ priminesters an ex super model, and an honourable principle of a defunct school that's controlling members are in jail for nearly a year? Best to open a vet school in a special economic zone rather than a golf course in Florida.

Too many contingencies.

We'll, that's gotta go down as a meme - especially tweeted before the meeting. Photo above: Trump, and three others wondering "Why are we even here?"

The look on Melania’s face is like That of a hostage.

I thought this was an old picture. It is not. Here is the one from 2017.

Trump has one policy. Whatever Obama began, negate it. TPP is Obama's idea. Original, China was not interested. Situation changed. Japan is not hated in Asia. The Asian countries decided their economic growth together with Japan while Trump. want Asian TPP member countries buy Cars from Detroit and Ohio.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@toshiko - Obama had nothing to do with the original plan. There were four countries involved and America wasn't one of them.

@GyGene - for the smaller countries involved I think this collective gives them strength they wouldn't have had otherwise. I just hope they aren't abused. I'm glad America isn't involved.

Regarding the picture... both Akie and Melania look like they are enjoying the frustration their husbands are experiencing.

Then stay away!

The original 12-member agreement, which included Japan but not South Korea, was known as the TPP.

I did not realize that. Why would Korea be left out originally?

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I don't know much about the TPP nor how it works. But it seems to me that working with each country individually would be much better way to make trade deals.

Obama was pushing TPP. Hilary opposed as a Dem candidate. Obama proposal. included Japan to import American looking grain rice and Japanese increase eating more long grain lice than short grain rice.

Actually within this discussion here, it appears that Trump makes sense... as far as "fair" trade is concerned...

Much is discussion is based upon the "dislike" of Trump as a person and as a President and not necessarily the trade concepts he is expounding...

The part about "free trade"... that is a problem individually and as a group...

Another term and concept which can be used is "open trade"...

Most important is the concept of "controlled trade"... which causes the most problem...

That is the real issue behind what is being argued as "free trade"...

In the name of free trade, individual countries or groups as unions are trying to "control trade" and make it "fair", but stuck with the concept being "equal" and not "mutual"...

The idea of "fair" being expressed by Trump is "mutual", not necessarily equal but "agreeable" and "beneficial" to all parties to that trade...

Trump Tweeted : "While Japan and South Korea would like us to go back into TPP, I don’t like the deal for the United States," Wow! Why SK and JP want US to re-negociate TPP? I'm on Trump side this time...US wanted much more to add beyond the contingencies existed and they were almost puzzles in a labyrinth alleys. American First without TPP, I'm totally agreed!!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

TPP failed few times because Japan refused to change eating habit. Rice. Then Sushi boom came in USA.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Right now, Trump is pushing exporting cars made in Detroit and Ohio.

Man, Melania T is hot in this pic. It sums Donald up that he is not satisfied with a wife who looks as good as that.

What a pathetic comment. You think the value of a women is how "hot" she looks? Grow up.

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

ok, if the deal is no good for the USA, then not to do it is the correct choice. Can always make bilateral deals with the ones the USA doesnt already have separate deals with.

Akie actually looks good here, much friendlier and more approachable than Melania.

Are you serious? Mrs Trump looks hot here. After this lunch I bet Abe-san can't wait to get back to Ginza with Aso-san.

Beautiful shot of the best 2 leaders in the world. And the ladies who support them every day,who are very, very capable in their own right.
