Nobody dies ! So this is definitely not a geinocide or violation of humanity! Those camps were technical institie or academies for working skills! Except tall walls and machine gun towers, some students were not that cooperative while in campus!

@ Wallace Fred

It depend of the ranking but it is good, moreover compared to China. So it is more accurate to say it is"very democratic" than "isn't a democratic nation at all".

So all Uighur are terrorists? All Palestinians are terrorists? All Irish are terrorists? All Muslims are terrorists? Collective punishment.

Aye. Not so long ago Irish people were vilified and harassed in the UK simply on grounds of their ethnicity/nationality. And then there was internment and diplock courts, which backfired on the authorities as it became one of the biggest IRA recruiting tools. That was, until Thatcher's disgraceful treatment of the hunger strikers.

The detention of Uighurs in prison camps is a human rights catastrophe. It is nothing less than a modern day cultural genocide.

And whatever else it is, it ain't communism.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Maybe Japan can lend a hand to the Uighurs?

I have met only one in Japan-a bar owner...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

The Nationalists weren't exactly all that democratic either, but I agree with the basic idea that Western indulgence has much to blame for China. They should have kept up a strict regime of limited sovereignty and insist on complete and unconditional compliance with signed treaties, but instead they induged China, until we have today.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

"Signing letters" and "Urging" China doesn't work. The only thing China's gov. would understand is either an uprising from the general population or a blockade to all its ports. That's how you cripple a country nowadays. No need for bombs or an invasion force. But no country or group of countries are brave enough to do it. This is the fault of all those nations who, after WW2, allowed China to kick out a democratically elected gov. and make nukes.

To be honest, I don't have a solid answer to that. While I can clearly and safely state that it is not Communist, I never made the claim that I know what it would be instead. While I do know the tenets of Communism, and therefore can clearly see that it is not Communist, I don't know the ins and outs of the various political systems to be able to accurately give an opinion of what it would be.

Others have claimed it's an oligarchy however. You could research that and see if it fits.

Fair enough. Appreciate the answer. Just to be clear, I didn't think or say you made the claim that you knew what it was.

Seems that the word "Communist" is fast being an alternative way of saying "unpleasant" or "repulsive"for some people whose minds are somewhere in the 1950s.

Personally, those goddam Commie mosquitoes are giving me a hard time today....

Nowhere in the article is there any mention of the long history of islamic terrorism in the region, which is not different from Mindanao in the Philippines, Pattani/Narawat in South Thailand, Aceh in Indonesia, Chechnia in Russia, Kosovo in Serbia, continue the list at will. All we get is whitewashing and another tale of a "minority" without any mention of background.

Sad to see that Japan is joining the Western globalist propaganda.

Chip Star: No just pointing out the US policy of exceptionalism. Do as I say, not as I do.

I'm neither the US, nor American, nor feeling like my country should receive any exceptional treatment on anything.

So why can we not address the issue being discussed in this story. Riperez, since you seem to be the passionate sort, what should China do regarding the Uighurs?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

While I can clearly and safely state that it is not Communist

It's still retains some communist aspects; Politically, it is highly centralized and communist. Every yard of the country belongs to the governement, as do the banks, the media, most of the major industries and the ability loan money to certain businesses & individuals. But it is a communist party structure with capitalist aims. But even Russia had this.

The English language media's monopoly of information is creating two classes of nations, the winners and the losers. If you want to be part of the winners, you better behave and do what we tell you, or else.. If you are a journalist working at CNN or Reuters, you probably feel like god.

Would agree with this statement 99% of the time but not in this case though. Not an 'anglos vs rest of the world' thing imo. A few respectable (mostly) independent journos, travelers etc including/especially non-anglos have been there & heard dozens of such stories; arbitrary detentions, disappearance of thousands of Uighurs, torture etc and it's been going on for decades. Don't think Uighurs are all manipulative liars & attention seekers tbh.

Yes, this is basically what you first stated. What type of government is it then?

China's infernal affairs.

Heh, I can't tell if this is someone criticizing Chinese affairs, or someone supporting them but cannot properly spell 'internal'.

CCP: Name says 'communist', nothing else communist about them. They do not follow the tenets of Communism.

Democratic Republic of North Korea: Name says democratic, nothing else democratic about them. They do not follow the tenets of democracy.

Totally agree the world should protest. BUT, the US can address its issues NOW.

I agree, and the world is protesting the US NOW on this issue.

But this story is not about the US, it is about China, and it's atrocities towards the Uighurs. Why do you think we should be diverting the talk away from the atrocities faced by the Uighurs from the government of China and talking about a different issue?

Have your heard about tidying our own house first?

I'm not American. What tidying are you speaking of, and why should I be talking about that in a story about Chinese atrocities against the Uighurs?

The US continues to supply Israel with weapons that it uses against stone throwing FREEDOM FIGHTERS. Still the US has not addressed the children that were removed from their parents.

I agree, it's horrendous, which is why I criticize these things in stories about them. What I'm not clear on is why the Uighur issue is less important in a story about the Uighurs than these issues you keep trying to divert the conversation to. Why do those issues have more importance than this one, in a story about this issue?

Instead of whipping up hysteria against the Chines, perhaps they should first address these issues.

Perhaps they should, but I'm not American, and I'm criticizing Chinese atrocities against Uighurs, in a story about atrocities by the Chinese against Uighurs, and to be frank, I really couldn't care less whether you think these people should clean up their own house first, as that is an entirely different issue to this one, and if we are required to clean up all issues before any issues can be cleaned up, then every issue holds up every other issue from ever being able to be addressed, and nothing gets addressed as a result.

So instead of going on with rants against other countries, let's keep the rants to the current issue, mmmkay?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

China's infernal affairs.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

The Chinese government is as Communist as the North Korean government (aka the Democratic Republic of North Korea) is a democracy.

Enlighten us, please.

Strangerland:" the world should also protest the atrocities happening to the Uighurs in China? And if not, why not?"

Totally agree the world should protest. BUT, the US can address its issues NOW. Have your heard about tidying our own house first? The US continues to supply Israel with weapons that it uses against stone throwing FREEDOM FIGHTERS. Still the US has not addressed the children that were removed from their parents. Instead of whipping up hysteria against the Chines, perhaps they should first address these issues. The "beacon of democracy" should lead by example, don't you agree.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

China is not Communist.

The economy, no. The government, yes.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

They are examples of what has/is happening without scrutiny, without much public concern.

What in tarnation are you talking about? Yes, they are? The US border issue is discussed and criticized regularly, and the Australian aboriginal issue is one that the Australian government has been addressing for decades now, trying to fix their wrongs.

The world should be protesting about these atrocities

The world HAS protested these atrocities.

Now that we've addressed that, would you agree that since the world should protest atrocities such as what the US border patrol is doing to immigrants, and what Australia did to its aboriginals, that the world should also protest the atrocities happening to the Uighurs in China? And if not, why not?

Their country, their culture, their business.' Isn't this what you cry when somebody comments on Japanese issues?

Which Japanese issues consists of massive rounding up, jailing, torturing and brainwashing almost 2 million ethnic minorities the way china has done?

Do Japanese tear down mosques and churches like what china has done? Heck, if anything, Japan has even built prayer rooms at their airports for Muslims to pray. Japan even preserves ancient Christian churches as heritages. china only knows how to tear them down.

Yes, it is the refrain we hear from Ganabre.

Absolutely disgusting crime against humanity, is what Communist China is doing to the Uighurs. It's a crime against humanity, genocide.

'Their country, their culture, their business.' Isn't this what you cry when somebody comments on Japanese issues?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

In and of itself, this rebuke of China is deserved and appropriate.

But having said that -- this is yet another example (and there are many) of the world's comparative silence when it comes to treatment of Christians.

China treats its Christians at least as badly as it does the Uighurs. And in many other parts of the world, Christians are harassed and persecuted and even killed on account of their faith.

Yet for the most part, we almost never hear about it in the media, or from world bodies that readily and quickly call out mistreatment of other groups.

I don't understand the selectivity.

Based on rumors, possibly faked and fabricated report, ambassadors singed a letter to blame China for something she doesn't do ? Japan isn't a democratic nation at all, and not quite civilized, as simple as that.

Japan is very democratic and extremely civilized. We could bring up how mainland Chinese people will defecate wherever they are when the urge occurs as a counter argument to any claim that China is civilized.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

No Western delegation was willing to take the lead and expose itself as a "ringleader" through a joint statement or resolution, diplomats said.

This was due to governments' fears of a potential political and economic backlash from China, diplomats said.

The UN is like a spider's web. If you're a fly, you get caught in it, but if you're a bull, you pass right through.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

which kind of Muslims does Japan and the West wants then?

ISIS, Al Qaeda type of Muslims? as long as they're not in Japan or USA.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Absolutely disgusting crime against humanity, is what Communist China is doing to the Uighurs. It's a crime against humanity, genocide.

Strangerland: They are examples of what has/is happening without scrutiny, without much public concern. The world should be protesting about these atrocities, not just those which the US use for propaganda. The people of the world should not accept these human rights deprivation, but the US can end their human rights violation today and set an example.

Isn't this what the US has been doing on the Mexican/US border?

Isn't this what the Australian government did to its indigenous people?

It’s terrible what has happened in those places in addition to what the Chinese are doing to the Uighurs.

I’m unclear on the relevance of your bringing these other atrocities into the conversation - were they examples used as a comparison to show how horrible the Chinese actions are? Or were they meant to somehow excuse the Chinese atrocities?

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Once again, Japan behaved as a western "power" badly again.

Where are the call to free the Palestinians, the Rohingya?

Let me get this straight.

The 'west' including its lackey entow have ignored the crisis in Yemen where families have been decimated everyday for years and expect the rest of the world to believe they suddenly care about what's happening in china?

Not even a word or a mention of WHY these people are detained.

The article says its to stamp out Muslim extremism and terrorism several times. If the Chinese want approval they are just going to have to do it the American ...with precision bombing that has very high but "unfortunate" collateral damage. Oh, wait. That isn't working out too well for Israel as the UN condemns them regularly too. Oh well. The one thing the UN does best is sit on its hands so just do whatever.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

If i were a Chinese and i see vicious anti-Chinese hate every single day, i would be very pissed.

Facts are facts. It's weird that you view them as "vicious anti-Chinese hate."

15 ( +17 / -2 )

If i were a Chinese and i see vicious anti-Chinese hate every single day, i would be very pissed.

Not even a word or a mention of WHY these people are detained. Not even a word about the years of terrorism all around China from various groups that live in that region. Not mention of non of that. Just a perpetuation of the same old narrative. The world is divided between those in charge of the narrative, and the victims. Those on the table, and those on the menu. You are either a winner or a loser. There is no in between. China is the loser right now, and you can almost feel the intense hatred building within their society for foreigners. I can't blame them, i feel the same way. The English language media's monopoly of information is creating two classes of nations, the winners and the losers. If you want to be part of the winners, you better behave and do what we tell you, or else.. If you are a journalist working at CNN or Reuters, you probably feel like god.

-13 ( +6 / -19 )

Good for the West and Japan for condemning the detention of ethnic Uighurs. How about putting sanctions on China until it ceases desists this outrage.

12 ( +14 / -2 )

There is nothing free, open, or democratic about China. Its people are far too brainwashed to care about what the UN thinks.
