Why now? Both leaders first took the reigns of power many years ago, when China's IP theft was rampant, and at the time they did nothing about it, indeed giving it the blind eye. Why the tough talk now, I wonder? What has happened since then? Hmmmm...

Well that's interesting. The university of Hawaii's website says that:
Governments have murdered hundreds of millions of their citizens and those under their control. The questions are, then, how is this democide defined, is genocide included, how many have been killed, how do we find this out, and what sources can be used? -- Democide: Murder by Government.
Forgive me for the cynicism but it's a bit like the fox and the hen house thing. I'm not too sure how serious I can take Abe's statement. And what responsibility have these two leaders got to Venezuela? It sounds like meddling.

At least the Germans are sincere in all this.

Two leaders and two countries going in opposite directions. Abe is headed for the sky. Merkel is headed out the door. Japan is headed towards Superpower status. Germany is headed to the dustbin.
Ganbare Japan!
Please check your facts.Japan has been a superpower since 1980s. And rising up with booming economy and Military (2 aircraft carriers being built, 130 stealth fighters on order, world leading AEGIS ststem being installed, etc).
I disagree. 2 great nations, 2 strong leaders, traditional allies, people are very similar. Follow the “rule of law”. Actually, Japan and Germany are moving closer together.

Germany is a dreadful enemy and even more so as an ally. The EU is basically German's milk cow

Like Goeballs said the bigger the lie the easier it is to sell. Abes efforts are flaccid and an excuse to get out of Japan and life a life unobtainable in the Japan.

Germany and Japan together as part of the G7 and old traditionally ally can achieve good things in the international panorama.
Both countries are leading the European and Asian diplomacy and economy.
Germany and the European Union together with Japan are moving to the right direction about several matters.
Alex80
People speaking about the EU and "right directions" without considering how we European citizens, are suffering because of France and Germany governments for years.

Ask yourself because there are things like Brexit, the gilets jaunes in France, most Italians who would want an Italexit to get their sovereignty back.

No matter what you think of Maduro, he got something like 60% of the vote in Venezuela's last election. Independent bodies who monitored the election said there was no interference in the vote count. As I understand it the governments of some countries around the world are already recognising Guaido as the new president of Venezuela, even though there has been no election and he is unelected. This is for the people of Venezuela to decide, not foreign governments.
I'm no supporter of Maduro, and correct me if i'm wrong here, but I believe the current situation in Venezuela has come about because of sanctions, despite the country sitting on huge oil reserves and natural resources.
Furthermore, the bank of England recently refused to repatriate Venezuela's gold when they asked for it. It's something that the people of Venezuela could do with right now.

Bet it's the first time German politicians have sat at a group of school tables covered with a cloth. Big win Japan.
