"respite in its trade battle with the United States": As long as Japan buys US weapons to support the US economy. America First! How many billions is Japan going to spend propping up Trump? This is what the Japanese people should be asking.

the only reason you would want a respite in trade is because you are taking advantage of the other side

Until the contract is signed, I take it as a pledge to buy 135 F35.
The shear quantity to me seems like to appease Trump and appeal to the American people that Trump is doing a marvellous job for the America. By the time the first plane is delivered Drumpf would be out be out of office and the quantity might be scaled back.

Go Trump, go!

This was a great visit and I'm so glad America and Japan have such a great relationship. Makes me proud!

Best president ever. We're going to get a good trade deal with Japan by the end of the summer.

I think Japan trade is a very minor issue.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago; China is pulling out the "rare earth" card. This is a very very dangerous situation for the U.S. The Japanese trade issue is insignificant when compared to this issue (see article below)

Having an imperfect trade deal with Japan is not very significant. Not having access to rare earth minerals is a near show stopper for U.S. technology.

I would rather buy cheaper stuff.. American steaks here are way cheaper at the supermarket, compared with Shizuoka or Kobe steaks..

I have a few American friends who now tell me that DT plans are starting to have a negative affect on the economy, although products are still coming in from Japan and China, they are now more expensive, DT idea was to stimulate the USA economy so slowing down imports, but it hasn't, people are now paying more for them products, so its starting to inflate the economy as people want more Money to buy these product. large companies are not going to invest millions of dollars in building new plants in the US as they think it could all go tits up when there is a change in the presidency, which means things will go back to normal ie buying more products from China etc, so at the moment companies are not investing in the USA. so it looks like DT idea has not worked.

That's the problem - for decades, Trump has been calling out leaders, thinking that his simplistic way of thinking was right, and they were just doing it wrong. Now he's in the position where he's realizing that his simplistic thinking doesn't result in the simple outcomes he thinks they will. The real world is kicking him in the a$$.
He's inept.

If Japan do not waste time with America but build itself internally, trade with Asia would be much better.

All the more reason to finally confront China now.

Did they tell you that U.S. GDP is at 3.2% while the EU's GDP is at 1.5%, and that U.S. unemployment is at 3.8% while the EU's unemployment is at 6.4%? Obviously Trump is doing something right.
