Plain and simple...Trump is an idiot!

21 ( +44 / -23 )

I just returned from a two-month stay in the US which only buttressed my previous impressions of the country: Americans are proliferate consumers. The country has a tendency to want everything and waste much. That is, exports are not the root of America's trade deficit problem; imports are, and this will not stop until Americans change their behavior - which is unlikely to happen.

So, yes, Trump is barking up quite the wrong tree and thus beckoning calamity. But then he's always been a few cards short of a full deck.

22 ( +39 / -17 )

I jusj took screen shots of major news outlets. This pic is everywhere. Fox news has horse racing. Sorry their readers dont know much.

8 ( +20 / -12 )

Plain and simple...Merkel is an idiot!

Plain and simple...Trump is an idiot!

who's been a useful idiot for Putin and Xi. Trump's played his role as a tool in the new 'global' order, weakening the US to to make Putin and Xi and their respective empires stronger.

In a very short time in the White House, he's made brand Trump one of the world's best known, ensuring greater wealth for him and his family, stiffing most of the rest of the country in the process. But then spanky bonespurs has never cared one iota for either the country he was born rich in or its peoples. Except his family.

13 ( +28 / -15 )

Look at Ol’ Muppet face, adopting the same crossed arm pose as his master. Honestly, Trump, Bolton and Abe look like a nightmarish version of the Three Stooges.

1 ( +21 / -20 )

threatened to stop doing business with them altogether

Really? So what is Trump thinking, we can adopt "Juche" in the United States? Freaking moron.

8 ( +24 / -16 )

I've noticed a lot of pro and anti-Trump statements going in all kinds of directions except one. No one is disagreeing with him on the main issue. The US has been completely taken advantage of and you all know it. You might not like how he is turning the tables back in our favor or at least somewhat on a level playing field but none of you can say the U.S. hasn't been the trading chump for the world for the last few decades. We've footed European defense against Russia and we've footed the bill for NATO and the UN. And in return, you've been able to enjoy relative peace while you mock us as "warmongers". Now it's time to hold your own and I think you're about to find out how badly you've been fleeced by your own governments who should have been taking care of you vs relying on the U.S. All those benefits you've been giving away to migrants, time to find out where that money was actually coming from.

A picture says a thousand words!

this one says, “ I’m just going to sit here like an infant with my arms folded and pout until I get my way, because I don’t know the meaning of tact, maturity or professionalism “

but as always, the people who follow him will see it as him being a “strong leader “

In this photo, Trump looks like a petulant child while the rest of the adults in the room try to deal with him.

Trump has a "blank stare." Uh, with only a handful of IQ points to function with, his "blank stare" is only a reflection of the blank space in his cranium. In other words, there is nothing up there but air.

And America is the piggy bank Trump and his regime are robbing!

18 ( +28 / -10 )

The Cold War of the 50's, Vietnam and the social turmoil of the 60's, Watergate in the 70's, Iran Contra of the 80's - have we ever been in such a dark place in America? The current President is a serial sexual predator, a grifting con man, a race-baiter, cavorts with porn stars, and worst of all, is a puppet for the Soviet dictator. Insulting our friends and allies that have stood shoulder to shoulder with us against our enemies for the past 100 years, yet suggests we let Russia back into the world's good graces after it launches information warfare against the west by meddling in free elections, invades Crimea and the Ukraine, shoots down an airliner murdering almost 300 innocent people, poisons dissidents abroad, and props up a Syrian dictator that gasses his own people.

In concert with his propaganda arm Faux News (...we deceive, you believe...), he spouts far-fetched conspiracy theories that are no more that McCarthyite character assassinations.

"I had nothing to do with writing the response to Donald Jr's meeting with Russian intelligence agents at Trump Tower".

"I wrote the initial memo that incorrectly stated the basis of Donald Jr's meeting with Russian nationals at Trump Tower was about adoptions". This man is nothing but a psychotic habitual liar.

MAGA AIBI! Which means My Attorney Got Arrested....And I'll Be Impeached...

Trump style diplomacy.......Be very wary of anyone who thinks they can bully, push others around to get their own way and to satisfy their own ego.

Gotta love Merkel... sure, she has made mistakes, but she will not put up the Orange One's antics.

13 ( +20 / -7 )

Abe looks bad in this photo, pretending to agree with Trump. The tariffs Trump imposed for national security reasons target Japan too. Abe is an empty suit.

-2 ( +14 / -16 )

^ Exactly !

-6 ( +8 / -14 )

Still waiting for Trump to actually make a deal. 18 months and not a single agreement made. #FT

5 ( +11 / -6 )

he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated.

So WHO are the protectionists?!!!

I back the USA fully on this one.

3 ( +12 / -9 )

Elsewhere in political news...

“Japan, Canada agree to promote WTO, TPP against U.S. trade policy”

This proves that Abe is two-faced, trying to play both sides to his advantage.

Oh, heads up people, say what you want about Trump, but don’t dare criticise Abe, his fans are out thumbing down, without even posting a single response.

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Trump needs to be charged with treason to the United States. Our trade and teamwork with our allies and partners was created to avoid the disaster that happened in World War I. Trump is as petty and weak minded as those that thought they were above the rest.

I commend the G-8 for standing up to this loser after trying to educate him of his ignorance.

2 ( +12 / -10 )

What picture - it is almost like it has been posed by actors.

With Trump bizarrely trying to destroy the G7 because he is worried about Chinese steel imports while not doing much about China while at the same time also trying to bring the aggressor Putin back in, My only conclusion is that his irrational behaviour is controlled from elsewhere. His Kremlin masters must be loving this.

His actions do not help the USA or his friends. The only ones helped strategically are his enemies.

I wish he had concentrated on trying to build his wall. If course he can't, because it costs real money. Pulling out of trade deals costs nothing in the sort term, but is expensive in the long-term.

He makes Brexit look economically sane.

3 ( +10 / -7 )

The last offer Trump made yesterday at the G7 was for completely free trade, no tariffs or taxes whatsoever, so long as everyone did the same thing.

Last month my wife ordered some kids clothes from Carter’s in America, the cost was 9000 yen, plus another 5000 yen in tariffs and fees. I never realized how high Japanese tariffs were on clothes or shoes, especially leather. A pair of American or European hiking boots can cost triple in Japan what they do in their home markets. It’s absurd.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

In this photo, Trump looks like a petulant child while the rest of the adults in the room try to deal with him.

This is the decade of the millennials, kids always get their ways, so it's a good thing looking at it from that perspective.

Trump has a "blank stare." Uh, with only a handful of IQ points to function with, his "blank stare" is only a reflection of the blank space in his cranium. In other words, there is nothing up there but air.

And yet, that petulant child is saying, either do it my way and be fair or NO Way! Love it! Go Trump! Lol

And America is the piggy bank Trump and his regime are robbing!

Hey, we were robbed for so many years, now everyone else is complaining? These people need to shut up, man up and grow a pair.

-21 ( +3 / -24 )

PM Abe looks really angry ar Merkel. Dont worry President Trump,PM Abe and Japan has your back.

-11 ( +3 / -14 )

@bass4funk

This is the decade of the millennials, kids always get their ways, so it's a good thing looking at it from that perspective

You would think for a man at his age he might have grown up by now......

And yet, that petulant child is saying, either do it my way and be fair or NO Way! Love it! Go Trump! Lol

You would think for a man at his age he might have grown up by now.....

7 ( +11 / -4 )

This proves that Abe is two-faced, trying to play both sides to his advantage.

Trump does what's best for his country, and you cheer. Abe does what's best for his, and he's 'two-faced'.

Is that... yeah I think it is... yep, definitely. That's hypocrisy I smell.

4 ( +10 / -6 )

The picture really says everything that needs to be said about Trump. The way he sits there like a petulant child who knows he has done wrong and yet insists upon claiming innocence. "It's not my fault I stabbed you in the back, you should have dodged me." Trump is going to single-handedly destroy America, and drag the rest of the world into chaos with it.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

All the Trump haters seem to ignore the strength of the US economy, the unemployment rate (especially for blacks) and the potential 'peace' process meeting with North Korea. The usual left tactic is to focus on the personality and ignore the results. Most people are familiar with the saying 'It's the economy stupid.' - and that's doing pretty well, at least for the moment. Name calling is just so shallow. If you think Trump is doing a lousy job, then talk about the results of what he has done that you find displeasing - not his particular personality.

-4 ( +8 / -12 )

What we are witnessing is a new century of fair and free trade. All those pseudo leaders have never really fully understood what it means to lead.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

@bass4funk - Usually I read your posts and there are times when you make some valid points. Obviously your views are contrary to most people here but you seem to have been consistent.

This post however, I have a hard time understanding.

This is the decade of the millennials, kids always get their ways, so it's a good thing looking at it from that perspective

In this case I have to agree with the last response by Kaishu.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

Hey, we were robbed for so many years

No you weren't. Biggest economy in the world, biggest victim complex in the world.

When my kids were 5-6 years old (and still occasionally now), they would scream and argue and try to convince me about something that clearly wasn't the truth. "I didn't eat that chocolate" they would say, with a goatee of chocolate around their mouth.

Reminds me of how the Trumpets seem to think we're all going to fall in line if they keep spouting this BS that they have been getting screwed for so many years. Um, biggest economy in the world people. Don't expect us to be as stupid as you are, simply because you keep repeating it.

My kids, once they hit around 7 years old, were able to grasp that concept.

7 ( +14 / -7 )

@Laguna - I am American (but living in Japan a couple of decades) and the point about Americans being consumers (to the point of craziness) is spot on. Most American friends of mine see the way I live and they think I am crazy. I live in a very nice place but it is quite small by U.S. standards and the amount of things around the place is quite minimalist. Americans do want everything and do waste so much too (what bugs me most is the waste of food).

However, if you look at those who were alive in the depression (fewer and fewer, I know) or those on farms/ranches you would see a complete difference.

This consumption does impact trade and the trade imbalances. As I have said before Trump is not 100% wrong on trade but he misses key points (one example the amount invested in the U.S. by Japanese companies).

The U.S. has had a great deal for decades. Yes, the U.S. is funding a great deal of the defense of the western world and East Asia but on the other hand the benefit is cheap energy prices for the U.S. (vis a vis the "petro dollar").

This is one case where I agree with Trump about "fairness" of some of these deals, but on the other hand I disagree with how he is going about this (the picture says 1,000 words) and I also fear that the status quo may be better than the alternative. If the U.S. bucks up on trade there may be consequences far worse.

Why the heck is Bolton there?

Trumps response to Merkel:

My apologies. I stand corrected.

Um, the idea that America has not been getting equal and fair trade is the slanted narrative.

If you don't want people to slant narratives, you should first not slant narratives.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Canada should not even be in the G7. If it was not for the United States Canada's economy would be smaller than Puerto Rico's

Well, I don't think it will matter, as America is likely to quite the G7 and go for the E3 (Russia, Iran and China).

For anyone interested, the WTO quantifies (or I should say attempts to quantify - as it is not easy) yearly and publishes the data.

https://www.wto.org/english/res_e/booksp_e/tariff_profiles17_e.pdf#page=10

The U.S. does have pretty low tariffs but there are also other factors in play. I think all sides in this argument can pick statistics that prove their point.

As I said above, the more I learn about this the more I believe maybe it is better for the U.S. to maintain the status quo on this issue.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

You would think for a man at his age he might have grown up by now......

Really,y I feel the same about the other leaders. I just get really annoyed with these whiny people. Man the....up!

No you weren't. Biggest economy in the world, biggest victim complex in the world.

No, we were robbed and the trade deficits and the leaving of the manufacturing sector proved that over the years.

Huh, Even Politico gets it..

https://www.politico.eu/article/what-donald-trump-gets-right-about-europe-eurozone-china-imbalance-trade-problem/

At $380 billion, it’s now much larger than China’s $200 billion surplus (about 1.7 percent of that country’s GDP, according to data from the International Monetary Fund). And looking ahead, the situation will get worse. According to IMF forecasts, China’s current accounts will be roughly balanced in 2022, whereas the eurozone’s surplus will hardly have shrunk by then.

The eurozone surplus doesn’t reflect the strength of the German industrial machine or the supposed virtue of its policies — fiscal or otherwise. It is mostly the result of the eurozone’s structural imbalances.

For a monetary union’s economy to be balanced, it has to take into account the differences between its respective nations’ different political, economic, and social systems. What happened instead when the euro crisis took everyone by surprise in 2009 was that each member country was told to become more like Germany.

But for the system to work, if everyone must become like Germany, then Germany must also become a little bit less German. Surprise — this is not what happened.

Countries in trouble were told to cut costs, boost competitiveness and implement austerity policies. It worked: Imports fell and exports rose.

Germany, though, didn’t change the course of its economic policy and didn’t feel any pressure to do so as the European Commission, which has the means to clamp down on “excessive imbalances,” looked the other way.

According to European rules that are even less enforced than the more talked-about ones on fiscal deficits, a member country cannot run a surplus higher than 6 percent of its GDP. Germany’s surplus amounted to 8 percent of GDP last year, while the Netherlands’ was 8.5 percent.

As long as the narrative of the eurozone crisis keeps making a surplus the moralistic sign of economic virtue, Europeans are unlikely to dare to take steps to tackle a problem that is now the world’s.

Here’s hoping that the brutality of Trump’s attack on free trade will force them to spring into action.

I so deeply agree.

Reminds me of how the Trumpets seem to think we're all going to fall in line if they keep spouting this BS that they have been getting screwed for so many years.

Hey, they don't have to, the EU needs the US more than we need them, of course we need each other, but the EU will not call the shots on this and Trump won't budge, gee, even now there are some signs of showing willingness to talk about some middle ground.

Um, biggest economy in the worldpeople. Don't expect us to be as stupid as you are, simply because you keep repeating it.*

Not me, I'm not a politician. I'm just watching how they will all eat a bit of tasty crow in the upcoming weeks.

A complete farago of lies and propaganda, created by evil cynical manipulators to appeal to the basest instincts of the worst educated, most marginalised people in the US. A con job of epic proportions.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

Love this pic, it shows exactly how the chihuahuas clamor to the big dog when their cash cow is threatened. Cash cow of course being the US and how they have taken advantage of the US for so long.

Canada has 280% tariffs on US agriculture and US imports theirs for free. It is not fair, and Trump is asking for fairness.

If you don't want fair trade, then you are just taking advantage and it won't happen anymore.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

And I don't even need to say anything I haven't already:

Maybe its time to end the freerides the US gets all over the world - start by charging fees for every military base the US has in the EU, Japan.

Thats what gonna hurt most I guess, as the War business is the only surplus for the US.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

If you don't want fair trade, then you are just taking advantage and it won't happen anymore.

No problem. This is the same as that whole Eagles thing. They didn't want to go, so Trump canceled and said 'be nice or we won't invite you next time', ignoring that they didn't want to go in the first place.

We want fair trade, and if the US is going to continue to go on the 'Everything for America trade' path, then the rest of us are just going to trade with everyone else.

Again, lessons I teach to my kids:

If you want people to play nice, you have to play nice

The best negotiations are when both sides win

5 ( +6 / -1 )

They want the security, they don't want us to bail, not going to happen or they charge us and we charge them back for protection.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Trump says everyone has been robbing America.

Hes looking at those who have a trade surplus with America.

Trump does not say how America has been robbing all the countries IT has a trade surplus with.

Trump hypocrisy.

Trump says global warming is not important and it is not man made.

Trump idiocy.

Trump wants Russia back in the G7/G8 even though it has supported Assad, invaded Crimea and Ukraine and meddled in Elections to get Trump elected.

Trump following orders from his Kremlin masters.

Trump destabilizes friends and alliances that have kept the world peace for the past 70 years.

Trump gifts to his Kremlin masters.

In short if Trump wanted to damage America and the world in the worst possible ways, how would he do it and what would he do? Probably exactly what he has been doing since getting elected. Confuse, bewilder, lie and slowly dismantle the structures of peace among allies beginning with the environment, trade and direct relations. All the things that make Putin and Xi go to bed at night excited to see what blunders Trump makes while they sleep.

The world continues to mourn the Trump presidency. Trump = the wicked witch dripping evil where ever he goes.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

They want the security, they don't want us to bail, not going to happen or they charge us and we charge them back for protection.

EU/USA trade is almost even. Maybe the US should learn to be more competitive with heavy industry (which the EU is). Trump is just whining because he's mad that other countries are not buying enough Chevies. Chevies? That garbage car? Maybe the US should make better cars!

Proof? The EU sells more to China than the USA.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

No problem. This is the same as that whole Eagles thing. They didn't want to go, so Trump canceled and said 'be nice or we won't invite you next time', ignoring that they didn't want to go in the first place.

It's stupid, when the President summons you, just go and deal with it. I hated Obama, but if he asked me to come, I'd go, it's just about respect. If he were still the President and the same thing happened, the headlines would scream racism all day.

We want fair trade, and if the US is going to continue to go on the 'Everything for America trade' path, then the rest of us are just going to trade with everyone else.

Bye and good luck, but don't worry, we'll leave the door open.

> Again, lessons I teach to my kids:

If you want people to play nice, you have to play nice

The best negotiations are when both sides win.

I teach my kids, when someone punches you, you hit them with everything you got and as dirty as you get, take no prisoners, never give in and never accept defeat and stomp them.

-10 ( +3 / -13 )

As much as I hate to admit it, Trumpy's grumpy gripes about trade imbalances do seem to have a sound, logical foundation, yet the structure of international trade that has formed over the past 40 years is such that Trump's attempt to overturn the international system overnight is the equivalent of trying to remove with one jerk the table cloth of a fully set banquet without !?#$$?! Yep, sowing chaos is what Donnie Darko does best without need of any preparation. His courting of the devious Rasputin isolated within the Kremlin walls with his advocacy of a G8 seat (Golden Shower Diplomacy?), albeit not without its economic benefits, is ill-timed to persuade his pssed off "allies" he's been attempting to shake down. When the dust settles after his ranting and Trumpelstilskin hissy fits are history , the US will find itself having to pick up the hefty tab left by the MAGA follies of POTUS.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Just because they eliminate tariffs does not mean other countries will buy more Chevies. Look at Japan. Zero car tariffs but almost zero chevies. Do Europeans really want American cars? It means the US has easy credit but their competitiveness in terms of exports is America's problem.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

when the President summons you, just go and deal with it.

Just let that one roll around your minds a little, people. "When the president summons you". Just like an emperor, or a king right? How dareth the people dare defy thine royal summons? Off with their heads! And thou shalst deal with it!

These people always go off about freedom and rights, then use the words of dictatorships to describe how the people should deal with Dear Leader.

it's just about respect.

Respect is earned. In the past, you would think that going through the process of becoming president would earn one that respect, but we saw that to not be the case in the Obama era, where people questioned whether or not he was American, because he had a funny name, and wasn't born the right color. You saw it where people yelled 'liar' while he was addressing, or where people thought they could shake their finger right under his nose on the tarmac, with the media watching.

No, unfortunately we saw in the last administration that becoming president does not in fact earn one respect. In fact, we saw that disrespect, such as questioning one's birth with no evidence, for five years straight, is actually a winning strategy to become president.

But maybe Trump has earned respect somewhere else. It's very possible, but when a person insults the people of your community, calls them crazy, animals, rapists, murderers, etc, then that is likely to destroy any respect that they have earned. Why would anyone respond to their 'summons' in a free country? That's ridiculous.

Respect is earned, and Trump has not earned any in the places he's demanding it.

As I teach my kids:

If you want people to be friendly to you, you have to be friendly to people.

Amazing that they are better able to grasp this than the president of the United States of America.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

what a fantastic photo. So many things going on.Historic

Trump and PM Abe should hold Summit to discuss forming new trade block. Japan, USA plus any other nation which want to join. It will be counter to China growing influence, and a free-trade zero tariff block. If EU wont join, so be it. This would be big boom for already booming Japan and USA economies.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I think that this whole Trump debacle of a presidency could actually be good for humanity in the long run. When he's done his 4-8 year temper tantrum, and America is left a mess (two Republican presidents in a row), it will stand as a case-study about how the idea of going it alone in our present day world where we are all connected just won't work. The isolation of America will show how freaking out and raging like a bull ends up being alone, and the cooperation happening throughout the rest of the world will stand in direct contract, to show how working together is the path to success for the future of humanity.

We just need to mitigate the damage done while we are learning this lesson. That's the tricky part.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Of course, it wont happen. Nations will continue vested interests, japan protecting rice/agriculture, US their industry etc. All these Summits seem to do is push people away from free trade and provide platform for domestic grandstanding...

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I love that photo. You can just picture that in his mind, he's got his hands over his ears and he's going "lalalalala I can't hear you lalalalala".

6 ( +7 / -1 )

It’s worth researching some like for like comparison, EU and US, tariff, non-tariff, quota, rules of origin, procedures and formalities etc etc

I selected EU and US as I have the sites close at hand and am familiar with layouts.

United States International Trade Commission…….

USITC Tariff Database Interactive (data current through March 23, 2018) Quick lookup; effective dates; related trade data.

https://www.usitc.gov/tariff_affairs/tariff_databases.htm

EU Tariffs……

This section provides information on tariffs and other import measures applied to a given product imported into the EU.

http://madb.europa.eu/madb/euTariffs.htm?productCode=0201202010&country=US

When the red mist clears, EU member states will need to take a deep breath and hold their hands up because in all honestly it is not a level playing field by any stretch of the imagination.

The picture clearly indicates the frustrations in trying to reason with President Trump, however angry threats, name calling and demands will achieve nothing.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Maybe you didn't see the news, they already did this. It's the new TPP. The US has already been left behind on it.

Dango bong

USA subsidizes its farms to +20 billions of dollars a year. You drop your subsidies and we'll drop our tariffs. That's why tariffs exist, mkay?

To cry about tariffs when you are lying is why no one listens to Trump, to the USA, or to useless Americans. Your own government agencies do the work for us, Canada don't have to prove anything.

Go use Google. Find out about Canadian trade to stop your ignorance instead of posting here to remove all doubt

@sf2k; "useless Americans"?

if the table wasn't there they'd throw him around the room

6 ( +7 / -1 )

PM Abe does look angry at the other leaders in the photo. Especially Merkel. Angry, strong and resolute. Once aluminum tariff is smoothed over with Trump, Japan and America are on the same page.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Alistair:

Look at Ol’ Muppet face, adopting the same crossed arm pose as his master. Honestly, Trump, Bolton and Abe look like a nightmarish version of the Three Stooges.

Yeah, that was the first thing I noticed apart from immature man-child himeself. First we get Pence copying Man-child grabbing the bottle of water on the table and putting on the floor. Now we have another minion copying Trump's cross armed pose, standing on his side, and thinking, "Don't you dare threaten my master". Absolute sycophant, even after each time he's stabbed in the back by the man-child. Wonder whether Abe will get those tariffs lifted.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

as everyone else has their lips shut, it appears that Bolton and Macron are the only one's talking here. The arms and positioning are just the snapshot. Everyone seems to be adding their expectations on top

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Abe is really holding down that thoroughly unimpressed look extremely well lol.

I'm not sure what to make of this whole situation now.

I suggest they all get back to the numbers. Out of all the articles I have read about this so called trade war, which doesn't exist btw, most are EXTREMELY LIGHT on actual numbers and in the end, that's what matters.

Trump said today that Canada charges a 270% tariff on U.S milk

Is that true? If it is, he has a right to be pissed.

We need more facts and figures and a lot less hot air.

One good thing to come out of the G7 meetings is apparently a lot of figures were floated around and hopefully that gives the leaders of the respective countries a better idea of where things are out. Get all the grievances out of the closet so they can be worked on.

Its probably a good thing in the end.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

The Americans provide 22 billion dollars of subsidies to their dairy farmers. Thus the reason for the dairy tariff. Otherwise Canadian producers would not be able to compete with the Americans.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Zichi - I think you meant to say $14/Canadian, which I think reinforces your point. I also fully agree Americans waste way too much food.

This useless American thinks Canada (as well as the U.S., Japan, any other country) should protect their agribusiness for the sake of their countries and citizens.

I think your statement about protecting Canadian dairy farmers is spot on and actually reading the laws for tariffs on U.S. agricultural imports to Canada for dairy products reveals that after a certain quota is reached these high tariffs go into effect, which would reinforce what you say.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Trump threw his potty at Trudeau calling him “dishonest”.

I don’t think he asked his Twitter followers to check out a non-existent sex tape of him or referenced a crackpot theory about from the National Enquirer, but this could get worse and Trump could yet roll out the big guns.

Trump calling someone dishonest...

3 ( +7 / -4 )

Trump said today that Canada charges a 270% tariff on U.S milk

Is that true? If it is, he has a right to be pissed.

It might be. But part of that may be that American milk is crap compared to Canadian milk (this guy explains it: https://americanadiangal.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/canadian-milk-expensive-but-more-safe/). American milk is cheaper, because it is way lower quality. Putting a tariff on American milk is a way to keep low-quality milk from entering Canada. In a country with a public health system, it is against the public interest to let in sub standard sub park food products.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

The Americans provide 22 billion dollars of subsidies to their dairy farmers. Thus the reason for the dairy tariff. Otherwise Canadian producers would not be able to compete with the Americans.

Well there you go. That's the sort of information that needs to come to the surface.

Hopefully there will be more involvement in this issue by actual economists familiar with international trade and regulators along with less involvement of politics, the mass media and even commentators like everyone on this thread because lets be honest, most of us know very, very little.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

@Strangerland. What Trump said is partially right. This is due to the fact that these tariffs come into effect only after the import quotas have been reached.

As for the quality of milk - I would agree with you. The U.S. allows too many additives, growth hormones, etc. into the food chain. If one wants organic milk without the growth hormones, etc. then the price of milk approaches that in Canada.

The U.S. allows the use of many growth hormones, chemicals, etc. in food production that are not allowed in the most of the rest of the world (including my country of residence, Japan). This was one of the major reasons I was steadfastly against the TPP as it could potentially destroy a nation's sovereignty related to laws disallowing these hazardous products in food, dairy products, etc.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

he's made brand Trump one of the world's best known,  yep reversed course on Chinas ZTE , because jobs being lost in China, Chinas tariffs are now a no story, his daughters Ivanka brand was given trademark status in China and three days later China approved a loan of $500million for a Trump branded property in Indonesia, Trump is clearly in it for his own monetary gain and is in violation of the emoluments clause in the constitution , not even Trumps advisers can explain it. LOL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy3_Beo4Sug

3 ( +6 / -3 )

That picture at the top will work very well for the President with his base and others. If you look closely it seems everyone is not even looking at Merkel. they are looking at Macron who appears to be the one speaking while Merkel glares at everyone.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

The Americans provide 22 billion dollars of subsidies to their dairy farmers. yep and about 40% of Americas crop farms receive around 20 billion in subsidies, yet Trump cries fouls when others do it LOL.

then youve got the massive bailout of its auto industries and the multi billion $ tax subsidies that automakers receive by individual states for manufacturing there, Tesla alone receive 1.5billion in tax breaks to setup in Nevada. drop all your subsidies America then well talk about free and fair trade

https://www.downsizinggovernment.org/agriculture/subsidies

4 ( +5 / -1 )

It is amazing to see the ridiculous comments made by some, that seem to have no idea as to what is free trade and fair trade is all about. yep 22billion in AMerican Dairy subsidies, 20billion in American crop subsidies its clear many Americans have no idea what free and fair trade is all about , look in the mirror first then well talk about fair trade. https://www.downsizinggovernment.org/agriculture/subsidies

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Everyone of you attending the G7 were Trump's coporation employess now!

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Funny about all the billions of dollars worth of dairy trade and Japan can't keep the shelves stocked with butter.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

No one can dispute that international trade must be fair, free and well balanced. I think the U.S. has led the world for free trade since the end of World War Two. It worked very nicely for the U.S. as far as people the world over wanted to buy products made in U.S.A. over poor products made domestically.

But other countries have caught up with the U.S. in the quality and credibility of industrial products and consumer goods. Customers don't value U.S. products as highly today as they used to. U.S. products overwhelmingly dominated the showcases of shops and department stores in the past But not anymore. Most of U.S. products have lost competitiveness to foreign industrial products and consumer goods while U.S. entrepreneurs and investors were immersed in more lucrative easy money games.

So will Trump's "America First" policy work out successfully as he hopes?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Have to remember that most Trump haters here aren’t American so they have no vested interest in the success of America. I do however and fully support the President declining to allow us to be taken advantage of in trade.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Actually, if you look closely at the photo, Trump is looking at Macron and is probably getting reprimanded, which he doesn't like. This photo reinforces what I posted on another thread about a week ago. Trump is probably the most despised world leader right now- and he's got a lot of competition to beat -- Putin, Kim Jong Un, Xi, Netanyahu, just to name a few. I didn't include Abe because he is probably not despised around the world, just clueless.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Trump's attitude towards his allies is a disgrace and he is allowing the US to become a pariah, and isolated.

Which is fine by me, but sad for the millions of decent Americans who have been let down by this lying, colluding, cronyist, nepotist President.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I do however and fully support the President declining to allow us to be taken advantage of in trade.

America: biggest economy in the world. Biggest victim complex in the world.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Trump is getting it done. Merkel and co of course hate it.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

I love the pic - Merkel trying to intimidate but Trump not having any of it. Go Trump!

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

Uh-oh....

Kim better make sure his wife isn't in the room....

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Trump is getting it done. Merkel and co of course hate it. yep getting it done with a big help from China, NK deal will never be possible without them , oh that $500million Chinese loan to Trump brand resort in Indonsia and Ivankas trademarks acceptance in China and ZTE now allowed to buy American tech even though the CIA FBI have clear evidence of them spying on Americans. Trump making China great again. LOL

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Hi Matt Hartwell, I believe where foreign policy is concerned, Prime Minster Abe is more the pragmatist.

I'm leaning toward a form of independent system for trade dispute/arbitration.

Every G7 member has some form of sector by sector protection measure. The issue here is mired in egos, silly handshakes, and personalities.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

America: biggest economy in the world. Biggest victim complex in the world.

Tell that to the millions of middle class that voted for Trump and lost their jobs and the better part of middle America or the breadbasket part of the US. Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin all former reliable blue states that the Dems lost because as usual, the left doesn’t get it.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

I'm leaning toward a form of independent system for trade dispute/arbitration. yep its called the WTO an organisation that almost every trading country on the planet is a member of. Trumps national security tariffs were also ruled illegal under Bush in 2003 , so now he doenst like that stat he wants a different "independent system for trade disputes" LMFAO

5 ( +6 / -1 )

So Trump left the meeting having insulted his allies, passed on a message from his sponsor Vlad, and having failed to reach a deal. Alienate & fail, it could almost be his re-election slogan.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Everyone of you attending the G7 were Trump's coporation employess now! like Trump with his hands in Chinas pockets and China grasp on Trumps nads. LOL

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Tell that to the millions of middle class that voted for Trump

It's not like i'm hiding it.

And I agree, millions of middle class have been screwed in America, but bait-and-switch Don isn't doing any good for them.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

What Trump is saying is that he wants free and fair trade for all.

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

Matt Hartwell

One good thing to come out of the G7 meetings is apparently a lot of figures were floated around and hopefully that gives the leaders of the respective countries a better idea of where things are out. Get all the grievances out of the closet so they can be worked on.

Do you honestly think that most of these leaders are like Trump and didn't know these figures beforehand?

Its probably a good thing in the end.

"This is fine"

-Dog in a burning room.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

What Trump is saying is that he wants free and fair trade for all.

He may be saying that, but we're talking about bait-and-switch Don here.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Maybe its time to end the freerides the US gets all over the world - start by charging fees for every military base the US has in the EU, Japan.

Japan is paying 75% of the cost of US troops in Japan already. US is staying in Japan for its own hegemony too. Japan may be able to bear all the cost but if they do so, US troops becomes hired soldiers who must obey Japanese order. Is it OK?

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Ganbare Japan!Today 11:05 am JST

PM Abe does look angry at the other leaders in the photo. Especially Merkel.

Yes, we can truly say the pinnacle of PM Abe's diplomatic achievement has been standing next to Trump, folding his arms and looking angry. Bravo. Elect that man Eternal Prime Minister.

Angry, strong and resolute.

Try not to get too excited.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

What Trump is saying is that he wants free and fair trade for all.

No, he's saying the exact opposite. He's saying, "Our global village is disintegrating. It's sliding out of our hands; we are not in control any more. So now our invisible control is failing we have to draw back the curtain and show you the clenched fist."

Trump is an utter disaster for the US.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

they have no vested interest in the success of America

But Trump is interested in China. Trump has become China's little trade puppy. The ZTE deal is proof and his quote about too many jobs in China lost. Check his twitter post. The US has to be more competitive. the EU sells more to China than the US- proof.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

What Trump is saying is that he wants free and fair trade for all. exactly free and fair means no or close to 0 tariffs and no government subsidies to industries that give them an unfair advantage against foreign rivals. Americas agriculture sector is one of the most heavily subsidized in the world ($40+billion), American dairy farmers are subsides up to 73% of their market returns!!

https://www.realagriculture.com/2018/02/u-s-dairy-subsidies-equal-73-percent-of-producer-returns-says-new-report/

and they wonder why other countries have tariffs on those American exports that are heavily discounted indirectly because of those subsidies, and Canada has tariffs on AMerican dairy exports. America certain doesn't follow the free and fair trade that Trump is so adamant about.

https://www.downsizinggovernment.org/agriculture/subsidies

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Couldn't a gentleman in the vicinity, adjecent to Abe shoulder provided the Lady interperter with a step ladder?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Trump arrives late for meetings, signs an agreement which he immedaitely reneges on and insults other world leaders. Bad businessman, bad diplomat and a bad ally. Zero statesmanship. A childish moron. A complete and utter disgrace. Pissing off your allies is colossally stupid, no one will want to do business with him unless they really have to, even then they won't trust him. The US is now a pariah state.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

@ClippetyClop Got the inside scoop from the person who was my local MP at the time and again from a former federal minister; George Herbert Walker Bush. Nixon also called our PM an axxhole and pompous egghead back in the 70's.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Their is no dispute that trading has been extremely lopsided, un-fair and a major non-advantage towards the US, however that is only half of the problem because it is consumers greed and hunger for cheaper products that is the driver and left alone. Consumers in the US need to do their part and buy US made products and less of the imported junk..

0 ( +2 / -2 )

He must be getting advised by his good friend Obama

Where did Trump get his advice on the ZTE deal? So Trump hates Canada but he likes China? Seriously? Why is Trump worried about Chinese people losing their jobs? I thought he was America first. But it looks like China first and he has become China's little trade puppy. Trump hates Germany, the UK, Japan, France, Australia, NZ. But he likes Russia and China?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

G7 is dead, as simple as that. G7 missed golden opportunity to get China and India in and kicked Russia out. Unlike Abe, Trump is a business man and he knows numbers.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

Because Trump needs China until North Korea is solved. You act like a Trump isn’t the one who put ZTE out of business in the first place.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

It’s still America First with ZTE. Did you not see what he got for America in return for that deal?

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

G7 is dead, as simple as that.

It was pretty much dead when Russia annexed Crimea.

Anyway, whether it's 7, 8, 9 or 10 - it still ignores the peoples of the world and the problems they face.

It's an exclusive business persons' club that cares not a jot for the ordinary citizens.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Blacklabel, that is a stupid argument that Trump needs China for NK problem so that he get into ZTE problem. Trump doesn't need China to talk to NK and if ZTE deads, many other companies will dead with it too.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Ruining the country, one idiotic decision at a time.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Now it's time to hold your own and I think you're about to find out how badly you've been fleeced by your own governments who should have been taking care of you vs relying on the U.S. All those benefits you've been giving away to migrants, time to find out where that money was actually coming from.

Oh, I'm confident that we're not as stupid as some make us out to be.

Of course the governments involved treat the people with contempt. Just not in the way you claim.

We are all migrants, one way or another, the sooner we realise that we are the same and treat each other as human, the better.

Then, we can depose such useless insitutions as government and manage ourselves.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I disagree. NK won’t talk if China is against it. But that’s my opinion, we don’t really know.

Just by coincidence I found that in fact Obama did talk to Trudeau to tell him to “resist”. I didn’t know that had actually been announced in public.

http://www.businessinsider.com/trudeau-obama-advice-canada-internationa-affairs-2018-6

”Donald Trump. The man who stands up for America. Even while sitting down.”

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

The reality is that USA is a big country and Trump is a strong leader, as simple as that.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

G6 is stupid. There is no G7 without US, period.

-11 ( +1 / -12 )

Donald Trump. The man who stands up for America. Even while sitting down.

Whilst on the jacks, tweeting.

The man stands for himself, nobody else.

And the very idea that America needs someone to stand up for it is laughable. It's been doing just fine acting however the hell it likes for many, many years.

Whether it's a Democrat or a Republican in charge.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Blacklabel, you don't know doesn't mean we don't know. I know it, Trump knows it.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Toasted Heretic, Trump is an American. American first is the same as Trump first.

-6 ( +2 / -8 )

Trump hates Germany, the UK, Japan, France, Australia, NZ. But he likes Russia and China?

I don't think he hates any country, but he is absolutely determined to get Americans a better deal, in his eyes.

Unfortunately some of his attempts are really misguided, others have worked. I think he has had a hand in encouraging more factory growth in the U.S for example.

He just doesn't have the breadth of knowledge, or even the brains to comprehend the magnitude of global trade and complexity of it. And his advisers, good and bad, seem unable to cut through. His arrogance is another big part of the problem.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Great, symbolic photo accompanying this article.

Question: Why is President Trump sitting and all the other G7 leaders standing?

Answer: Because they all know they're in his court. Heh, even lead NWO globalist Merkel is bowing before him.

Winning!!!

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

It’s still America First with ZTE.

No, it's not. Proof:

Too many jobs in China lost.

(Trump Tweet)

Proof that Trump has become China's new trade puppy.

So, Trump hates Germany, Canada, Japan, UK, France, Scandinavia. Australia. But he loves Russia and China.

Trump hates all of the allies of the USA. Even ones who buy more from the US than sell (like Australia). Trump just loves to hate except for his rulers Putin and Xi Jinping. He's the little poodle of these two rulers because Trump is so weak. Also, he is the poodle of Mexico since Mexico refuses to pay the 100B dollars for Trump's 2,000mile x 50foot wall.

But who cares? The stock market is up, right? So big gains in stocks, but Trump is still the little poodle under Putin and Xi.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

still America First with ZTE. Did you not see what he got for America in return for that deal?

Sure, America got one step closer to the E4, with China Russia and Iran.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

I don't care GX, or GY. There is no point for G without USA, as simple as that.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Question: Why is President Trump sitting and all the other G7 leaders standing?

Answer: Because they all know they're in his court. Heh, even lead NWO globalist Merkel is bowing before him.

Winning!!!

They’ll get used to it, they need these quirks, they all just need to man up.

-6 ( +1 / -7 )

No what they actually received, not your trump hating spin on it. This was requested by President Xi personally. Which means he owes us help later.

“The Commerce Department said that ZTE had agreed to pay a $1 billion fine, replace its board and senior leadership, and allow the United States to more closely inspect the company by effectively having a handpicked compliance team embedded inside the firm”

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

He could be, no problem with that. He could be even a better president, based on his success in business.

No, he would be according to what I am reading here. Probably 10-20x better than Trump. From what I am reading Trump followers directlyconnect the stock market gains to Trump himself being a "successful" businessman. But if so that would mean that the stock market would be even higher if Bill Gates were president. Probably 10-20 times since Bill Gates is that much richer than Trump. The richer the president is the higher the stock market.

And it means that all you need to do to be a good president is be as rich as possible. The richer you are the better president you are. Trump really is not that rich in the first place so he really isn't doing that much for the USA, compared to what Bill Gates could be doing. What a waste of potential having that gross orange man for president. I wish Bill Gates would run in 2020. Bill Gates is also younger than Trump, and Bill Gates has real hair and more than likely does not wear dentures.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

This was requested by President Xi personally. Which means he owes us help later.

No, Trump has become China's trade puppy. ZTE violated the law and stole American secrets and Trump wimped out and said he was worried about jobs in the USA and prioritizes jobs in China to those in the USA. Proof is that Trump hates Australia since Australia buys more from the US than sells. So he hates Australia but loves China.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

“The Commerce Department said that ZTE had agreed to pay a $1 billion fine, replace its board and senior leadership, and allow the United States to more closely inspect the company by effectively having a handpicked compliance team embedded inside the firm”

None of that addresses what is suppose to be an ongoing security threat from ZTE.

Trumps about face on the issue should be both worrying and perplexing from an American point of view.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

That ZTE deal gives China an open ticket to go ahead and copy more American IP. Trump followers just like it because Trump likes it. And this American IP will end up in North Korea faster as it will make China less worried about repercussions since now Trump is China's little trade puppy (like with Russia).

6 ( +6 / -0 )

So having our own handpicked compliance team within their company and replacing their entire board and senior leadership does nothing to address the previous issues? I think it does. Plus the 1 billion dollars on top of that. Good deal.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

That ZTE deal gives China an open ticket to go ahead and copy more American IP. Trump followers just like it because Trump likes it. And this American IP will end up in North Korea faster as it will make China less worried about repercussions since now Trump is China's little trade puppy (like with Russia).

Isn't it a bit of a mute point at this stage though since Congress has blocked Trumps approach, democrat and republican? I thought congress killed it off and ZTE is still banned etc.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

So having our own handpicked compliance team within their company and replacing their entire board and senior leadership does nothing to address the previous issues?

No, just like Trump's wish for a wall (and Mexico paying for it) does nothing to build an actual wall. Watch China become more powerful from this at the expense of the USA.

Plus the 1 billion dollars on top of that

This is 2018, not WW2 era. 1B$ is not a lot of money.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

No one has blocked anything, it’s moving forward with the usual Democrats and Republican losers crying about it.

Now that we have established that 1 billion isn’t a long of money, then paying for the Mexico wall isn’t a problem.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

then paying for the Mexico wall isn’t a problem.

100B$ (at the very least)

1 billion isn’t a long of money

1 billion dollars Good deal.

Which is it?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Now that we have established that 1 billion isn’t a long of money, then paying for the Mexico wall isn’t a problem.

I want the Wall, but if the majority of Californians want to live in squalor, that is their choice. There are over 11 counties that are sick and tired of these looney open border Democrats. LA county is a complete mess, OC wants to remain safe and clean.

-7 ( +2 / -9 )

these looney open border Democrats

Reagan signed 3M greencard amnesty. It's the Republicans fault. The fact that it was the Democrats promising a wall is fake news

but if the majority of Californians

Texas doesn't want Trump's wall either. Then there is New Mexico, Arizona, much bigger than Cal's part. And who is going to pay for this 100B$ plus?

6 ( +7 / -1 )

What a great shot though. This photo symbolically shows the USA fall from grace and withdrawn from the world. Germany as the leader of Western democracy in unison with the rest of the world facing down USA. Expect more fallout

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I want the Wall, but if the majority of Californians want to live in squalor

How are the two parts of this sentence related?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Germany as the leader of Western democracy in unison with the rest of the world facing down USA. Expect more fallout

The only leadership Germany could provide would be to the local brewery.

Their lack of commitment to their own defense is one of the reasons the E.U still has to kiss America's butt.

Their embrace of uncontrolled immigration is one of the reasons the E.U stands a real chance of breaking up.

I would put more faith in France than Germany. At least France has a military and is prepared to spend to secure their freedom and Western liberal democracy against an unknown future regards Russia/China/Turkey

Germany does next to nothing, probably because they think he U.S will always be there.

They better wake up. The U.S has bigger fish to worry about in the Pacific.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

1 billion dollars is a lot of money. You were the one who said it wasn’t when it was convenient. Trudeau just spent like 600 million only for this summit.

So taking you at your word then 27 billion for a wall is nothing. Let’s get building.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Trudeau just spent like 600 million only for this summit.

For reals? How on earth?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Still waiting for the Tweet from Trump saying he's ending the $50 billion federal subsidies to farming in the interests of making a level playing field.  yep save $50billion, Americas exports partners wouldnt have an excuse to keep tariffs on agriculture /dairy and Trump can fund his wall, everybody happy!? oh except those red state jobs that rely on government handouts to stay afloat, oh well look like America export partners will have to Trumps job for him.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

So taking you at your word then 27 billion for a wall is nothing. Let’s get building. no hes said $1 billion, for a 3000mile wall thats cheap!!! 27billion for the same wall , that just plain stupidity

1 ( +2 / -1 )

1 billion dollars is a lot of money.

Again, we are no longer in the WW2 era.

You were the one who said it wasn’t when it was convenient.

I honestly don't know what you are saying:

1 billion isn’t a long of money

1 billion dollars Good deal.

So taking you at your word then 27 billion for a wall is nothing. Let’s get building.

Much more than that. The land grabs of people's personal properties will have to go through the courts, which is expensive. No one will want to give up their land. Also, it is illegal to build a wall along a river. It will cost and take many many years to change that law- if it can be changed. When they build the 50ft concrete wall on the Rio Grande should that river stay on the US side or the Mexico side?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Consumers in the US need to do their part and buy US made products and less of the imported junk..

much of Americas debt is imported cars from Germany and Japan, theyre quality products and that is why so many Americans buy them.

There, fixed that for you.

Yes, America supports it's farmers and so does a lot of countries. Japan is no exception.

So? If Canada starts buying American milk will Trump be happy? I have never seen Canadian milk in an American supermarket. I have seen maple syrup. Can someone let me know what Canada has to do in order for Trump to stop hating Canada? Trump hates Canada but he likes Russia and China (the ZTE deal)

When it comes to supporting their farmers, it is the idea of many countries and they do so.

What I am talking about is fair trade, open markets, dismantle trade barriers, many hidden to drive up the cost of American export goods. Bilateral trade agreements for truly free trade that is fair to both parties.

This is not just the ranting of a deranged president; it is the psyche of the US Government. It is the psyche of a nation that the world has allowed and empowered to become aggressive, to become domineering. It is the ranting of a nation that, with the help of other nations, has caused havoc and mayhem for the last 70 years. For the past 70 years the US has been at war with the world. Now is the time for the nations of the world to get out from under the heel of the US. Europe and the other nations of the world need to cut the US loose and sent it packing or they can look at more bullying, more domineering and more wars. Now is the time for the world to regain its sovereignty from the US. The US has delusions of grandeur and this has been encouraged by the appeasement of other nation. The US first and other nations can go to hell, this is the US foreign policy.

As predicted, Big Orange Man was completely out of his depth, and it showed. He is utterly unable to deal with people face-to-face -- he always has to be behind a screen. The great negotiator?? -- nope, not on display here. He didn't do A N Y negotiating. And then, with everyone wanting to wring his orange neck, he slunk off to Singapore. Another FAILURE! What did you make of that, people of America?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The other countries will trade more with each other and trade less with the US

2 ( +2 / -0 )

NAFTA already opens trade markets and reduces trade barriers

So why is Trump against it?

wtfjapan: Many milk farmers in the USA would LOVE to have a more regulated business like in Canada. WHY ? because now how it is in the USA those farmers are producing way too much milk and when they can't sell it it's going to wasteland so profit's going down. Too much milk makes the price they can sell it cheaper, taking care of those cows when cost for grains and other is raising so those farmers are getting in a very bad situation.

USA prefer to blame it on other countries than to try to fix their OWN home problems, it's easier to blame others than truly looking at yourself and try to find a solution.

OH! by the way USA is NOT America, BUT only A PART of it, so as we say in Quebec and sometimes in France "les Etats-uniens" :)

Trump is an idiot, not to say that other leaders are too, but at least they are trying to get along and understand others. Trump is like a baby making tantrums. Dr. Phil should treat him. :)

The expression on the face of your Prime Minister says it all. The delegates at the summit all appear to be at a loss as to how to deal with our President.

Unfortunatly, most of the American people feel the same way. Many of us, myself included, voted against him and are doing all we can to remove him from office.

Reading this I realize that I never would have imagined that I would ever feel the need to disrespect the President of my country by writing what I have above. However, I believe that it is more important for the people of other countries to understand that Mr. Trump does not represent all of the American people.

I believe that it is more important for the people of other countries to understand that Mr. Trump does not represent all of the American people.

It's a good reminder. To most of the world, an 'American' is a stereotype of whatever they've seen on TV. And Trump spends a lot of time on TV all over the world these days. For people who haven't met (m)any Americans, knowing that there are plenty of sane Americans who are just as baffled as the rest of us is a good thing.

Americans in general, and almost as a whole are good people, with good intentions, just trying to live a good life.

America the country, leader, and governmental system, is a mess right now though.

Trump's "threat" was to suggest, the complete removal of ALL tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies. Not sure how exactly that is a threat, unless telling Merkel and the rest of these corrupt politicians they can't keep taking money from trade constitutes a threat. Funny how the left wing and media leave that part out, they want "reduced" tariffs, where trump stated, Zero tariffs. Guess the politcuans have shown their true colors, they don't want free trade only trade the governments of the world are free to pillage

What is the population percentage?

You have misspelled my name, the name is Payne and I do not hide my identity.

It is of little use to argue with those that have never been involved in trade. They have no idea as to what free trade and fair trade is all about.

The only interesting thing here is the photograph. It's a great pic. Apart from that, it'll all be forgotten a week from now. By then we'll have redirected our outrage to something else we've been told he's done.

I just read a very interesting overview of the Canadian thoughts on this incident with Trump, as well as how they’ve been dealing with this whole trump debacle since he got elected:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/trudeau-takes-his-turn-as-trumps-principal-antagonist-and-canadians-rally-around/2018/06/10/162edcf8-6cc6-11e8-b4d8-eaf78d4c544c_story.html

It seems he’s united the country behind its leader, with Trump as the common enemy.

That makes Trudeau’s position much stronger. Unlike Trump, he has the support of his people. And the world really. I think we all feel a little pity for Canada being stuck next door to this.

It is of little use to argue with those that have never been involved in trade [because I have more than 50 years experience in this sector and you don't]. They have no idea as to what free trade and fair trade is all about [which means I know all the facts on trade and more than everyone here]

and

What is the population percentage?

?????

It is of little use to argue with those that have never been involved in trade. ive been involved in the export trade for over 20yrs. If I was selling Japanese products to America without any J gov support , but American were selling similar American made products in America with huge government subsidies effectively giving those American retailers a 73% advantage, how would I even compete. Then America decides they want to export those same products to Japan with those huge subsidies in place how would I compete without similar J gov subsidies or tariffs in place to make it a level playing field. Its pretty common sense doesn't take a trade expert to see the discrepancies. what Trump is demanding is far from free or fair trade.

‘That makes Trudeau’s position much stronger. Unlike Trump, he has the support of his people.’

Unfortunately this is not quiet true. Trump’s numbers are rising. He got elected in the first place partially because the Dems abandoned the working class. I understand trade is a very complicated issue. But when it gets argued in simple terms in the media Trump wins. He looks like he is the one fighting for the working class. While his opposition looks more concerned with the G7.

I want Trump out. But the opposition keeps using tactics which just make him stronger.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Trump’s numbers are rising.  well see 2yrs of tariffs on red states, job loses, mortgage defaults, home repos, well see how many are loyal to Trump when the dust settles

Wtfjapan

The same argument can be made against the other G7 leaders. No one wins a trade war. At least in the short term. And the US does have the largest stick.

Again, I don’t support Trump but I also believe we who oppose have to frame our aurguements and positions in a way that will win his supporters over. Not drive them deeper into the darkness.

The dairy issue is relatively small but both sides are focusing on it for a reason. It is a grassroots (pun!) issue. It’s a people issue. Those who dismiss Trump’s point of view so easily are making a big mistake. In the end for whatever (good?) reasons Canada may have they are in fact protecting the market. They need to use finesse to win their argument. Trudeau’s statement that Canadians won’t be pushed around while walking out the door of their compromise meeting was shooting a volley. The Resistance can deny that all they want. Trump returned fire as could be predicted. The surprise was with Trudeau not Trump. But The Resistance frames it as Trump’s responsibility, his amateur behavior. Well I can tell you his supports won’t buy that. Result, a deeper divide.

Not well played in my opinion by Trudeau if his goal is to get back to business as usual.

I say this as someone anxious to get Trump out of office.

The same argument can be made against the other G7 leaders. yes but Americans dont elect EU Canadian leaders, Id warrent a guess that those country citizens are behind them since they didnt start the trade war and are only standing up for themselves against Trumps threats. if EU, Canada, Mexico Japan are united , America doesn't have the largest stick.

The dairy issue is relatively small but both sides are focusing on it for a reason. but its Trump that keeps bring it up and agriculture exports which as we know are the most heavily subsidized in the world. yet Trump and his supporters keep harping on about fair trade but its hardly that while subsidies are in place, tariffs are just a counter to that.
