Abe was not ignored by SK at all. In fact, South Korea was fixated on Abe. Abe took just one step- provide the export information required to stay on Japan's White List, and never budged or added demands. Moon on the other hand, refused to provide the requested information, went crying to the UN, to the WTO, to the U.S., fanned an anti-Japan fever in SK, attempted to blackmail the United States, and at the end of the had to fold his pathetic hand after ruining South Korean relations with every country he engaged. The United States supported Japan throughout the entire dispute which Moon unilaterally escalated.

Abe's actions may be far from perfect on many subject matters, but as far as Moon and South Korea is concerned he was 100% correct and effective.

"But, why does Japan have to care about the decision of the supreme court of other country? It is their business. Let them decide whatever they want. Japan does not have to care about it. It is a matter of other country. Japan does not pay any compensation money to the South Korean war time workers. It is a settled matter."

Well, it's not that simple. Japan's government declared the companies in question (Mitsubishi & Co.) shouldn't pay anything, but then a South Korean court appeared to support the seizing of the financial assets in South Korean territory of those Japanese companies as a way of compensating the forced laborers. That's when this dispute really escalated.

Aren't 66% amazed at sour grapes SK is spewing even now?

Really doesn't matter what a poll of Japanese voters says. I'd be far more interested in hearing the results of a South Korean voters poll. Moon has succesfully wrecked his country's relations with Japan, seriously damaged relations with the United States, and North Korea still hates South Korea and any dreams of a "Peace Treaty" or "Denuclearization" are going nowhere. His approach to resolving issues with Japan has been met with failure after failure and made South Korea the laughing stock of the International community. South Korea is a country that needs to reflect on itself, it's historical revisionism, use of anti-Japan sentiment as a diplomatic and political tool and correct it's own national identity. Without this the country will never move forward and utilize it's own potential.

I'm relieved too S. Korea and the Moon administration decided to have some common sense and continue a vital defense relationship with Japan which they benefited tremendously from dozens of advance satellites and sensors which they lack but Japan has and gives data to Seoul.

Their own generals advice to stay and not leave how S Korea benefits more.

Moon administration wants to act like GSOMIA only the Japanese benefit and they don't which is the biggest lie of this administration hands down. They want to use this as a tool to pressure Japan to put them on preveliege white list and also to make Japan pay compensation again because of a bias Korean court ruling who gives pass to its own government who failed to distribute billions paid in today's money by Japan in 1965 to normalize relations.

-Standing up to S. Korea and the Moon administration is the way forward for better relations in 2020 and beyond.

Moon got rolled like a Sushi roll.

Would have loved to hear the actual Japanese wording when this poll was taken. "Relieved" suggests a pretty strong sense of satisfaction and well being, because I highly doubt that until this became an issue that these 66% even knew what that pact was about or even existed!

@ "Around 66 percent of Japanese voters are relieved that South Korea has decided to maintain a military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday."

Just where and when was the poll because it is not an accurate account from the many blogs posted all over Japan.

re: "Shinzo was ignored through all this by SK until the last minute intense pressure by the Americans just prior to the expiry date."

It was more the other way around, and for the real truth it wasn't the Americans pressure either Japan nor SK, as everything especially such as this comes from POTUS. What was said as I was at this meeting, was clearly this: " Our position is clear, you two need to work this issue out, our position is not to decide policy for you, that relies strictly within your countries. While we do agree it is best for both parties, it would be a failure and disservice to both". The US did not pressure anyone as has been reported falsely or taken out of context.

More like 66% now know what the true colours are of the Korean. Being a Korean in Japan just got a lot, lot worse; I for one am done with them forever

A piece of advice. Kyodo News opinion polls are not to be trusted.

Earth is round, meaning Japan deployed radars can't pick up incoming NK missiles until they are at cruising altitude and less than 3 minutes away from landing on mainland Japan. It would be too late to attempt an interception with Aegis Ashore by then.

Did you actually READ the rest of that post? I guess not! (That was a rhetorical question)

I answered it in the rest of the post, but I guess you missed it!

Japan's radars will not go blank, it's ludicrous to even think so, but by the time they would pick up any launches AND more importantly react to any potential attack, it would be too late.

Around 66 percent of Japanese voters are relieved that South Korea has decided to maintain a military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan, a Kyodo News survey showed Sunday.

Because of the brilliant leadership of PM Abe.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Why? Abe has 39 days left to declare a surrender or watch Japan's ballistic missile radar screens go blank.

IF Japan has ballistic missile radars why do they need the pact?

Japan's radars will not go blank, it's ludicrous to even think so, but by the time they would pick up any launches AND more importantly react to any potential attack, it would be too late.

Hence the need for the agreement!

The GSOMIA was not maintained; its termination was suspended until December 31st.

Says you and one single unsubstantiated report from an anonymous source. Considering how adamant you were that the decision was final and in no way was going to be reversed, I'd say your claims aren't exactly reliable right now.

I for one am done with them forever

...because of a decision a national government made?

Japanese government says the export control and GSOMNIA are two different things. But nobody thinks so. It is apparently a retaliatory sanction. I think the sanction was wrong and was not discretionary. All began by the sentence of South Korea's supreme court decision turning over the 1965 agreement between the two countries. But, why does Japan have to care about the decision of the supreme court of other country? It is their business. Let them decide whatever they want. Japan does not have to care about it. MASSWIPE

It is OK they seize assets of Japanese companies in South Korea. If it happens let the companies withdraw from South Korea and it is damaging to South Korea more than to Japan and Japanese companies.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Because of the brilliant leadership of PM Abe.

I see little brilliance in cronyism and corruption.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

The GSOMIA was not maintained; its termination was suspended until December 31st. Moon gave Abe administration 40 days to lift the export control or else. After that, Korea can lift suspension and let the GSOMIA at will.
