@masswipe

Can somebody explain why they think the North Koreans would tell the truth to Japan about 5 people but lie about 12 others?

Bingo, Kim Jong Il was telling the truth when he told the fate of all 13(Not 17) abductees to Koizumi.

Kim Jong Un is not Jesus, he can't raise dead people gone missing in Japan.

@ReasonandWisdomNippon

The U.S. should have done more to bring up this issue with Kim-Un.

It's not really America's problem.

USA failed us against South Korea as well when they took the Dokdo island from Japan 1954.

The US had a very clear understanding from 1948 that the Liancourt Rocks were Korean, and this position would keep showing up on the drafts of the San Francisco Treaty.

The word of one Japanophile(aka Dean Rusk) doesn't change the official US policy. This is why the USAF already added the Liancourt Rocks to KADIZ when the US set it up during the Korean War in 1951.

The zone was established in 1951, during the Korean War, by the United States Air Force to block communist forces.

Like every other administration I’m sure they’ll promise to look into it, then forget all about it.

Trump did not include Japan on several conversations with North Korea, doing what they want to do as always.

USA failed us against South Korea as well when they took the Dokdo island from Japan 1954. You did nothing, even though you said it's Japanese land.

2015 comfort woman deal Obama was there, America was watching, yet 2 years later they said nothing when S Korea backed out of it.

Japan always get the short end of the stick, always the loser in foreign policy.

"Japan officially lists 17 people as having been abducted by North Korea with five already repatriated. But Pyongyang maintains that eight died, including Megumi Yokota, and that the other four never entered the country."

The default assumption here by the Japanese is that the North Korean government in 2002 told the truth about 5 of the abductees (they were alive and well and living in North Korea) but lied about the other twelve. You can find the North Korean regime deplorable but also believe they were telling the truth when they stated that 8 abductees had died and the four other people listed never entered the country. Can somebody explain why they think the North Koreans would tell the truth to Japan about 5 people but lie about 12 others?

""" "Please return the victims to their home country as soon as possible," """

Yes Indeed.

Seems almost unanimous that these abductee kin will not convince Kim. The Japanese government has stronger issues & points to make with North Korea & Kim Jong Un. If they do get back to Japan, and if they indeed want to come home to a now ‘strange land’, it has to be bundled un a larger deal. You gave it your best try. Let Suga & his government take care of business. Today, think of Japan more than your family.

Its sad, but not gonna happen.

Unless the U.S gets involve ( its not, the orange man doesn't care) or J gov throws a lot of money at it, like a lot of money then the NK's have absolutely nothing to gain by entertenating some notion plurality to the Jpanaese.

I feel sorry for the victims of all this, but I don't see how they could possibly be returned seeing as Un is even less reasonable than his dad, not to mention him being controlled by his sister and Abe having promised but never delivered.

Sadly there are no more to come home. It is a non issue.

From what I last heard, the ones who are still alive are happily married and don’t want to come back.

do we want to kidnap them?

Even if they current government was to try, in the end, it's up to the North Korean regime let go those people (assuming they're alive and wanting to return to Japan) and they couldn't care any less in making peace, not even with South Korea. So really it doesn't matter what promises politicians make their hands are tied.

Suga will just make false promises he cannot possibly keep, same as Abe. Especially with Trump's love of Kim having made NK so much stronger and given it nuclear recognition, there is no way the emboldened nation is about to kow-tow to old man Suga's requests.

I truly am sorry for them, but Abe promised for 8 years more to resolve this its just not going to happen. It's a travesty on many levels.
