Masks on for the public show. They'll come off as soon as these people are away from the cameras. Kishida included.
This whole event is just theatre. No reason why they have to rope off large parts of the city for this. Why not just hold it on an island or a ship?

That's an odd Presidential photo.
Biden giving an overly friendly man hug with his security man behind him trying to keep his trousers up.
I wonder if Biden will hug the emperor in the same way?
Mark
Welcome to Japan Mr. President.
Hermann Resinger
Wait, soon after will Japan go for mandatory vaccination.

Kishida ya boss is here get your note book out son.

@ Mr N
”I don’t go around hugging my co-workers. Are these guys colleagues or cronies? Even the Japanese guy is like wth.”
look at the trade deficit, they are milking it!
stickman1760
Remember the gratuitous ass kissing when Trump came? Surely it won’t be like that. At least Biden and Kishida are grown men unlike Abe and Trump with all their toys like the ridiculous sumo trophy.

They're holding each OTHER up

Biden has very few foreign honors medals compared to Xie of China .
What can Biden possibly do to help the abducted Japanese nationals by North Korea ?
Biden just wants Taiwan to make chips and other products and doesn't want to upset China by recognizing Taiwan independence.
China views Taiwan as a China province whilst Taiwan claims to be the real government of all China.
The Republic of China /Taiwan and the people's Republic of China/ mainland China are both China.
Japan wants to look good so the international community will accept them.
Should be interesting.

Nothing. North Korean accounting is accurate and Biden can't raise the dead buried in both North Korea and Japan(Yup, those people gone missing in Japan blamed on North Korea)

Thats a way of showing your a human. Embrace each other to show appreciation. Biden is showing Rahm that he appreciates the work Rahm is doing as the ambassador especially since there was no US ambassador in Japan for more than 2 years and the embassy’s operation was a mess!
It’s much better than what Trump did to the European leaders at a summit when he literally pushed aside a few leaders ( bumped them out of the way ) just to get to the front…really unprofessional and no manner! Also Trump couldn’t patiently feed the fish while in Japan and just threw all food from the dish in the pond at once…no respect of Japanese culture and tradition ( even Abe was shocked )! Biden will meet the Emperor with more dignity and respect than Trump ever did!
Sven Asai
Yes, right from the start a nice hidden exchange of those little animosities and showing dislikes by quite some diplomatic etiquettes affronts…lol He chose not a civil Japanese airport for landing, but a military one, even on own quasi-occupied airbase area. And in return of that only the foreign minister is sent to the reception, which is about almost two ranks below of his presidential status.
John Noun
What utter drivel.
Trump is an utter cretin, but no respect for Japanese culture by the way a person feeds a fish?
Give it a rest

Japan must wake up, please do not take our hard earned money for America.

I wish they would call it the "squad".

The Republic of China /Taiwan and the people's Republic of China/ mainland China are both China.
Just because mainland China says something is so, does not mean you have to drink the koolaid and agree. But then, you have probably been brainwashed since birth to believe otherwise.
Biden isnt going to do much other than maintain the status quo regarding those two countries.
kurisupisu
Because,
like all other governments anywhere else, the reason has nothing to do with cost saving or environmental concerns but to with the projection of power.

@Yubaru
Are you trying to deny the fact that Taiwan is the ROC and most certainly "DOES" claim to be the rightful government of all of China and not an independent country of Taiwan ?
obviously you have no idea what your argument is !
Biden isn't doing diddly squat to maintain the status quo between those two countries because Taiwan isn't its own country .
It's about time you realized that very important fact !
Taiwan isn't a member of united nations anymore and Taiwan isn't officially recognized as it's own country and isn't trying to be one.
Taiwan wanted to continue to be its own Republic of Samosa but Japan invaded and colonized them for 5 decades.
After the end of ww2 Taiwan has continued its rightful claim as the ROC is the government of all of China.
Yubaru
Quite so, but that is relatively "ancient history!" anyway, and it doesnt matter today.
Taiwan is actually the Republic of China, the other one is the PEOPLE's Republic of China.
And you should stop the PROC's propaganda too! The only reason it's not "officially" recognized as a country of it's own, is because of the PROC.
The world should grow some cojones and officially recognize Taiwan as such.

There are two problems I want to point out here.
First: Biden's Air Force One arrived at Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, one of the exclusive U.S. bases in Japan. The base can be said to be an extension of Andrew Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. A sort of the backyard of the U.S. So, what does it tell about the current Japan-U.S. relations?
Second: Biden wants to bolster the Japan-U.S. alliance further by encouraging Japan to increase its military capacity in the face of China's rise and assertiveness. But how will he coordinate it to Japan's pacifist constitution that outlaws war as a means to settle international disputes involving the state. Maybe, he doesn't mind whether his suggestion will violate the Japanese constitution or not.
voiceofokinawa
Of course, the same problem arises with the Kishida government. But the LDP-controlled Kishida government wants to revise the constitution and scrap Article 9. They say the constitution doesn't fit in today's world situation and so must be revised.
Biden's urge for Japan to commit more to international wars may be a godsend for the Kishida government. You know the government often seeks external pressure proactively to realize what it wants against the will of the nation.
voiceofokinawa
Biden's Air Force One landed at U.S. Osan Air Base in Peongtaek near Seoul. The aircraft must have taken off from there when it headed to its next destination, U.S. Yokota Air Base in Tokyo. In other words, Biden was hopping from one U.S. base to another as if he was on U.S. soil. Very convenient, indeed. But what does it all mean?
voiceofokinawa
Their joint communique later at the conclusion of QUAD meetings that the current state of affairs can never be changed by force by any other country means the U.S. will have to remain an absolute hegemonic power in this part of the world forever. That means Okinawa must suffer a great deal by hosting so many U.S. bases forever and ever.
