Uh ... what is the name for SEALs in Japan? If those ships like it there so much, let them stay permanently.

Making "strong protests" means nothing to China.

Confrontation is the only answer to get China's attention. Or just stop claiming the islands.

Sad to see the development of the situation. Is China's move motivated by its desire to restore the old tributary system in East Asia, so that they think it's waste of time to engage in dialogue now over the territorial issue?

Evidently China wants to restore the old tributary system in East Asia as you say and believe now is the time to do so. The reality is that dialogue has not stopped China's ambitions.

How do the pacifist-minds who support continued dialogue propose to handle them now since they won't listen to dialogue and reason? Plea for more and more dialogue time? Ask China to continue dialogue for another 75 years in the hopes of a peaceful resolution?

Or maybe Japan should give up the Islands and walk away with loss of face? When China demands all Ryukyu Islands, then what? And in the end, should Japan submit to be a vassal state of China?

Confrontation is the only answer to get China's attention. Or just stop claiming the islands.

Or put military bases on the islands and as China has done in the South China sea, arm them to the teeth.

The only way for China to take them once bases and personnel are permanently there is to start a war. At this point that is one thing they will not do. What they could do is put their own bases on unmanned islands, putting Japan in the position to either let it go or start a conflict to get them back.

The safer bet for China is to take the Islands while unpopulated.

I thought this was the purpose of the new QUAD. Contain China’s aggression. With US elections on the way, and turmoil arguably fostered by outside powers according to the media, this could be the window of opportunity China may not get in another while for some land grab, i.e., Taiwan. Okinawa is but a diversion. Be on alert!

Japan should treat that kind of incidents with seriousness and urgency.

Japanese elite troops should be stationed on the disputed Senkaku without delay.

To find out how well Chinese troops had prepared to invade any disputed land, please refer to ABCNews's article titled "High stakes in a Himalayan hotspot" published on July 10, 2020 (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-10/high-stakes-in-china-india-himalayan-border-hotspot/12417248?nw=0).

The above latest incident was nothing news. Japan should learn more about the Sino–Vietnam War in 1979. On Feb 17, 1979, hundreds of thousands Chinese troops crossed 600 km China–Vietnam border to invade northern provinces of Vietnam.

Stop wining and counting if you think the islands are yours kick the Chinese fishing boats out

Just stick the land based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System on it and give China a well deserved black-eye...

China...continuing to make friends everywhere.

or better yet put troops on the ground.

"Or maybe Japan should give up demanding for the return of those U.S. bases and walk away with the loss of face. When the U.S. demands all U.S. bases in Japan be maintained as they are, forever, then what? In the end, should Japan submit to be a vassal state of the U.S.?"

That is nonsense. Japan can ask the US to leave at any time. They have not. The arrangement suits Japan and the US for defense reasons. If local governments ask for US bases to leave it is one thing. The National government calls the shots on the American presence. Discussions on base locations are one thing, allowing US forces to be based on Japanese soil is Japan's call.

Of course China supporters love to take the spotlight away from China and try to pressure the US Japan relationship instead. Such misdirection is typical but nobody is falling for it.

Just sink those boats if they fail to leave !

Defend your territory do not let the bully take 1 inch or centimeter.

I guess China is neither impressed with or scared by the Keen Sword exercise by  U.S. and Japan armed forces that is going on right now and is meant to deter this type of activity by China.

That's hilarious, it shows you how utterly weak Japan is despite the haters out there continually portraying Japan as a "war mongering, hateful xenophobic" country. All Japan has done is cry to the media over these ships, and the Chinese crew of these vessels just laughed and smirked and ignored Japan. And Japan will continue to be ignored and mocked.

I always like to look at a map of “disputed” territories and try to use common sense.

If you look at the islands, where are they nearest?

By that logic, Alaska belongs to Canada and Hawaii belongs to Kiribati.

And if places do belong to the nearest country, the Senkakus are 170 km from Taiwan and 150km from Japan (Yonaguni). China, at 360km, doesn't get a look-in.

Xi has told the Chinese marines to be prepared for war. You can interpret that as a deterrent or whatever but that is what he has said.

Unfortunately, it's too late. Japan has already allowed this to become the norm. If Japan starts sinking ships now, they will look like the unreasonable ones.

Just reciprocate and sail through the so called "south china sea".

JSDF-USFJ joint exercises Keen Sword? Never heard of it.

But according to a news release from the U.S. 7th Fleet, approximately 9,000 U.S. service members from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force are to conduct training with their JSDF counterparts in surrounding Japanese territorial waters.

It says exercises like Keen Sword provide the JSDF and U.S. military opportunities to train together across a variety of mission areas in realistic scenarios, enhancing readiness, interoperability, and building credible deterrence.

Peter 14,

That is nonsense. Japan can ask the US to leave at any time.

Certainly, that is nonsense. But that's what the bilateral relations really are. Japan can ask the U.S. military to leave at any time, as you say.

For example, Japan can be modest enough to ask the U.S. to return the land on which USMC Air Station currently sits to Okinawa's control immediately and without any strings attached. But it won't. Why? Because it fears asking so will offend the U.S. like hell, thinking it will undermine the alliance and that the USFJ won’t help defend Japan.

Halwick,

Or maybe Japan should give up the Islands and walk away with loss of face? When China demands all Ryukyu Islands, then what? And in the end, should Japan submit to be a vassal state of China?

This line of yours exactly describes the current Japan-U.S. relationship because one can rewrite the sentences as follows:

"Or maybe Japan should give up demanding for the return of those U.S. bases and walk away with the loss of face. When the U.S. demands all U.S. bases in Japan be maintained as they are, forever, then what? In the end, should Japan submit to be a vassal state of the U.S.?"

oldman_13,

So in your opinion, Japan should rearm to the teeth and restore its past glory as a great empire. I don't think that will be the answer to the current situation. What will come from an eye for an eye and a tooth to a tooth? An arms buildup will only result in a misery like a chicken coming home to roost.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

Well whose islands are they actually, guess we'll have to have a war to decide who some tiny little rocks in the ocean belong to

Ossan America: "China...continuing to make friends everywhere."

You literally cut and pasted this from someone who said the exact same thing about Japan, changing the subject to 'China'. Unfortunately for you, China doesn't care, unlike Japan, who really DOES care what others think (especially the US), and then get all bitter when they others don't like them (kind of like your "I'm rubber you're glue" post).

I always like to look at a map of “disputed” territories and try to use common sense.

If you look at the islands, where are they nearest? Well, its not Japan. Thats for sure. China and especially the island of Taiwan have a good claim. So thats also China... :)
