Looks like a successful start. Abe may have changed, who knows. If Abe can take Japan China relationship back to 2000 years ago, he would be a great PM. Economically speaking, China is the arrow that Abe needs for Abenomics.

Akie.

Modern day China or the China of 2000yrs ago? Very different countries as modern day China is very young andcame after Mao.

Mono is a decent guy.

This new relationship will stall out as China will keep sending ships to Senkakus in attempts to take control of Japanese territory. Japan will continue to resist this and China will point to this proving Japan was not sincere about better relations with China.

It will always come back to 3 things.

And WWII. "Re japans lack of sincere apologies and its revisionist history"

It is right that Japan make attempts to improve relations with China, but I dont see China doing anything to meet it half way. Without China making a genuine attempt also this will go nowhere.

I hope I can be proven wrong.

Let's say, Japan and China are two decendents of a vanished culture, one traditional and one polluted and mutated. Sadly, Chinese people were prisoners of that polluted one. Which culture will bring people a better future? Honestly IDK. I would still suggest Chinese and Japanese culture keep a good distance from each other, in case people themselves feel uncomfortable whether being a Chinese or Japanese, for China is still a teenager trying to find who they are on the useless history of who their ancesters were.

If they're both from a vanished culture, then what difference does a "traditional" or a "polluted and mutated" one make in their place in the future (what ever that means)?

Sounds like someone is weary of someone's rise, and how they're rediscovering themselves...

Viking Rin, great. What are you waiting ? Let Abe change the constitution and declare that Japan is the true bearer of Chinese civilization, an inventor of chopstick culture. We have proof that somewhere in Japan we still hide that Peking man skull. Show it to the world.

I agree. Japan will be doing all the compromising and China, nought. It won't be a fair and reciprocal relationship in any sense. China's way or the highway. They've been totally open about holding that attitude in recent times. Sure, try to be friends, but be prepared for the worst.

Matt Hartwell, of course China couldn't do the compromise because China has no shrines, China has no WW2 baggages, and China has not nationalized the disputed Islands. The three things may sound serious to you, but there are 3 million things going on between Japan and China, daily. To your surprise, our dear supreme leader Abe PM has changed his mind. Now his FM successfully secured possible visit by Abe of China, the first time since 5 years ago. You failed in your exploitation of small differences between Japan and China.

Ah, my bad!

Abe must now be so wary about Trumpy to shift like this!

Hope he also visits very Japan friendly Taiwan too!

The only thing that's changed is an agreement to have a meeting. .

A meeting doesn't mean the practicalities of those differences will change.

Its just a discussion.

When reality changes on the ground. Then we can say there is genuine progress in some way.
