I'm always one for dialogue but China don't seem to want to even listen.

I'd be in favour of boycotting Chinese goods, but that's difficult as so many items and parts are made there. Still, every little helps.

It's beyond tragic, seeing Hong Kong go from relative democracy to authoritarian (mis)rule in the space of a week.

Australia is on the other side of the world from China. They should keep their sticky US brown nose out of world security.

Geography was not your strong point at school.

More countries need to come together to combat China’s aggression.

it’s the only way to stop their bullying

When standing up to a bully, it is nice to have real friends by your side. Any improvement in the friendship between Japan and Australia is a welcome move and is to be supported.

Australia is on the other side of the world?

Perhaps a decent education and a map might solve that mystery. Also helping people escape what can only be described as a barbaric system its normal for a human being to help a persecuted human find relief even if on the other side of the world...check that map.

It's nice to see a democracy based country help people escape a hideous system of repression and violence. Think I lost a bag load of social points just now...whoops.

Hong Kong is physically indefensible from complete Chinese takeover. Sorry to say this but everyone who does not want to live under a dictatorship needs to get out as soon as they can. The democratic nations can only go so far in extending help.

Taiwan on the other hand is defensible. And I think the writing is on the wall that China will be living up to it's threat of taking it by force. Taiwan needs to declare sovereingty, forget the "Republic of China" stuff which is now history and control of the Chinese mainland an impossiblity. Rename the island as the Republic of Taiwan and apply for United Nations membership. They would get a standing ovation and the support of every country both democratic and otherwise. Except for China and whatever banana republics are on their payroll.

It mat be too late to save the people of Hong Kong, but not too late to save Taiwan.

@goodlucktoyou

where are you living now ?

not too many Chinese people around the world wanting to move back to China (if any)

What is there to discuss? China has broken its word yet again, and historically is nothing new. Written, verbal or hand shake agreements mean nothing to them as a bond to keep. The written document between China and UK concerning HK was signed by a member of UK who is no longer in the position therefore the paperwork is null and void according to China, so HK was free game and like in Tibet, they just rolled on in. Abe best be careful or wake up to the Senaku's getting word that they have moved in with bulldozers and ready to build, since Japan is too afraid to do anything and the US is to weak to stop China anyway. Proof is in the pudding and the US has shown nothing but soft cream when it comes to China.

Start encouraging locally made products and ask ambiguous companies where there product is made. Time to pay up and support democracies

This is a charade!

HK was handed on a silver platter to Beijing by Lord Patten.

The former Brit colony is already a solid part of China.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison should instead focus on protecting free and democratic Taiwan.

Both can do that by simply establishing full diplomatic ties with the non-authoritarian and fully democratic Island Republic instead of exclusively enjoying official ties with the dictatorship in China.

Failin to do so makes both da-kine obedient subjects of China.

HK was handed on a silver platter to Beijing by Lord Patten.

Patten (or Fatty Patty, as he's known in HK) was given the job as a consolation prize after he lost a local election in UK. That's how much they thought of HK.

Not much talk of Abe or Morrison, both Priministers says a lot about their......nothing.

Japanese prime minister Abe always says ”feel responsible”but he never takes responsibility.

Such he expresses concern but he will do nothing for Hong Kong citizen.

Britian under Margerat Thactcher was volunteer to return Hong Kong backrt o peoples Republic of China! There were legal documents prove UK and China struck a deal in 1984 about the return of Hong Kong! It was legal basis and internationally recognized! There doesn't exist "Takeover of Hong Kong by China'!

It was a myth fully blown by rightwing medias, part of their distortion tactics!

China installed a National Security Law to protect the citizens of HK. When the UK handed back HK to China the was a provision in the handover agreement for HK to install a security law , Article 23, unfortunately HK failed to do that , and has been without a security law for the last 23 years. The world saw what has been happening to HK without any laws in place to stop the violent protests and damage to property, the images of a man being set on fire, others attacked for trying to stop the rampaging protesters. With a population of over 7 million, a security law is an essential part of life to protect the country and it's citizens . Do any of those countries objecting to the security law imposed by China, (which was perfectly legal as HK is part China) , the US, UK , Australia Japan do they not have security laws to protect their own country and citizens. Do other countries try to interfere in the internal politics of the US, UK, Australia and Japan. I don't think the US or the UK , Australia or Japan has any moral right to interfere , going by the past history of those countries. HK will survive with the security laws, so will the one country two systems policy, at least until the expiry of the existing handover agreement. HK is the gateway to China always has been and will continue to be, especially for those wanting to do business with China.

Australia is extending 10,000 5 year visas, with the promise of permanent resident visa after, and Japan? Againt talk but unable to walk the walk.

What actions has Japan done in support of Hong Kong or against China, if anything?

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Express grave concern, regrettable, shocking, etc, etc. Japan can just on the sidelines and watch other countries do something concrete. We know Japan is always just words, no action.

China is a very very BIG market, right? That means a huge fortune, right? And Hong Kong is the gateway to China, right?

So everything is alright! Alright!

I’ve lived in both Australia and China.
