"Of course, Okinawa development measures and the issue of the base are linked," one of the officials said, although Okinawa Gov. Denny Tamaki directly asked Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in November to maintain the budget above 300 billion yen.

This makes clear that any discord emanating out of Okinawa over the US bases issue should be directed at Japan's central government, and not at the USA.

I thought it's bad news but it turns out to be good news.

Very, very good, Japan. Keep deploying the american.

That the central government acts as a lackey for U.S. interests is no surprise. Though this particular instance is blatant.

To state the obvious, Japan is a client state of the USA and the LDP is a lapdog for the American military. The USA military is a force of occupation, for the past 75 years, with an almost total disregard for the citizenry of Okinawa. Okinawa and Japan is simply a forward base for the American Empire

The antipathy of the status quo in Tokyo, towards Okinawa, has deep roots. The continual interference in opposition to the will of peoples of Okinawa, completely disregards democratic politics.

I bet they could come up with a pile of ¥¥¥ if this was going to be where to maintain the Land Based Missile System they’re kicking around

Isn’t that just only more a general fiscal problem on all levels and affecting all citizens? I guess, a lot of other regions, prefectures or projects are also facing less possible money support. Tohoku , the Tokyo games, a continued pandemic plus omicron now, international duties and higher defense spending regarding more possible threats from China, Russia , NK etc, that all already has cost and will also cost more than comes in during a quite halted economy. They surely take it a bit more personal there in Okinawa and attribute it all to the disputed bases or US forces presence, Futenma relocation and such, but I really think it’s not the main reason, no , just everywhere, people or businesses or governments , all purses and accounts are now rather empty or short before becoming exactly that.

If the Japanese government isn't going to provide enough funding for Okinawa to continue then Japan should release Okinawa back to its original Ryukyu kingdom .

Okinawa has endured far too much hardship under the reign of Japan .

Okinawa and Taiwan will become united states territory and probably much happier.

Lies and misconception.

Japan has spent hundreds of billions on Okinawa. Very developed area. Happy people, long life expectancy.

Only problem is USA soldiers and bases which Japan had no power since we lost WW2. America owned Okinawa until the 70s, gave it back to Japan with the understanding not to kick out their soldiers and bases.

Japan did not select Okinawa for America. USA itself selected Okinawa.

No, we shouldn't.

Why?

Stay away from the USA as possible.

Because....?
