Boasting size and behaving aggressively doesn't make Japan bigger and harder than it is.

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog" - Mark Twain

You don't have to be bigger than your enemy to make it too painful for them to continue fighting.

So, what threat is Japan attempting to defend itself from ?

Surely you jest? Unless you live in a little bubble insulated from any and all geopolitical news.

What the potential threat is plain for anyone to see, the question is how to prepare. Building up the military is certainly one of the options on the table.

I can understand the desire for networking as a force multiplier, and every major military is doing it, but it also worries me that that more sophisticated and network dependent things become, the more prone to hacking it will be.

Damned if you and damned if you don't I guess.

Under the postwar Constitution, the government has maintained it cannot possess "attack aircraft carriers" as they are among what can be deemed offensive weapons exceeding what is necessary for self-defense.

Surely it depends on how an asset is used rather than the specifications or type of asset itself that determines whether its offensive of defensive in nature? If you use an aircraft carrier to prevent attacks on sovereign territory than it is a defensive asset.

Japan has 3000 years history of friendship with China, never had any defensive forces and lived quite harmonically until 150 years ago when Japan was westernized.

Chaucer Guo, lives in China

In Chinese history, Yuan dynasty”元朝” was considered as a dynasty of China, because it did try to invade Japan twice, so it is reasonable to say that China did try to invade Japan.

China should abandon the concept of forces countering Japan. Make peace and love are all China needs to have a husband and wife relationship with Japan. Boasting size and behaving aggressively doesn't make China bigger and harder than it is.

And for the younger folks that wants to avoid the “3 Ks”, where are you going to find someone to play infantry soldier?

Being in the military is not a 3K job, but a respected one.

Wrong!. Super Dimension Fortress should be built.

Well said peter14.

What a lot of people are forgetting is that Japan has an extensive archipelago to defend and building numbers of fixed airstrips is expensive and they are easy targets all needing heavy AA defence. Giving the helicopter carriers the capacity to handle jets allows for a mobile airfield, hard to find, carrying its own AA defences and able to interdict anywhere required. A defensive weapon.

Yes, because it is all Japan's fault. Communist China has never harmed anyone...

Ok, so it wasn’t China’s fault that China tried to invade Japan... it was... peer pressure...?

With the average age creeping up, you’ll have to rely on a lot of expensive equipment. And for the younger folks that wants to avoid the “3 Ks”, where are you going to find someone to play infantry soldier?

According to the Japanese edition of the oxford dictionary, “defense force” translates to wasting disaster relief and pension money on buying American attack aircraft, cruise missiles and now aircraft carriers with a range all over the world.

Peter14, China is many ethnic group nation. Yes, mongolians as a minority group controlled China in Yuan dynasty, and tried to unite Japan with China because they thought Japan was a part of Han ethnic group. In fact, Japan inherited the name from China in Tang Dynasty, long ago before Yuan, and Japanese were Chinese people traveled to Japan even long before Qin.
