"I think it is very important to carefully consider how much people's understanding has advanced regarding this issue," Kishida said.

what's equally important is how much the LDP's understanding has advanced regarding this issue-

which is a big fat 0

My japanese wife and I kept separate names, so it's not like it's legally or technically impossible to do so.

This is a minor issue compared to dealing with the economic fallout from the panicdemic...

If you're more concerned over this then you are most likely a member of the laptop class

My spouse and I have separate surnames, and I sympathize with those who would like to stick with their original name.

That said, this is unlikely to be an issue in the front of mind for the majority of voters. Japanese people are largely conservative and conformist in nature and will be voting based on other issues, than things relating to minorities.

Long time allegiance to the LDP being the primary factor.

I pray that Isshin reformers have a big election result thoughz

Can we just say that the LDP wants to go back to the early Showa years? You know, when mothers were stuck in the kitchen and had to do everything the absent fathers said.

Are you yourself Japanese?

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, says that more discussion is necessary over separate surnames for married couples before legislation,

Typical useless LDP oyajis answer......more discussion needed because a decade or two of it was not enough? Public supports it as does every other party, except the LDP dinosaurs...another reason Jiminto deserves to loose a big bunch of seats to push them into 21st century thinking. Kishida himself just did a flip flop on the issue since he supported it just a few weeks ago. He basically broke all his media promises in a space of 3 weeks...what a PM.

This is a classic social conservative technique - because X is important we shouldn't do something about Y.

Of course, there is always an "X" that can be put out there, like "why are we worried about women having the vote when there are children dying of such and such".

It is an incredibly poor argument and a classic example of the false dichotomy logical fallacy.

Ah_so, not really, it is just a simple recognition of facts, while this probably should change and personally I can’t see a good reason why it shouldn’t, I recognise it is a comparatively minor problem compared to others that will be affecting how people vote including the innate conservatism of Japanese culture and people. So in truth at this point with an election looming I am amazed it got even this amount of attention.

These clowns deserve to lose everything in the coming election. Utterly spineless dinosaurs.

Not the point.

Despite the article headline, the vast majority won’t be casting their votes on the basis of this issue.

Yes it’s important. But it’s just not relatively important to most people.
