Yes, I listed that. It's called 'voicing displeasure'.

Strange. How come Korea didn't just form one country as it used to be before 1910 or Korean Empire or even Joseon were not one country?
kennyG
NK had returned several American abductees in the past ( Otto Warmbier、3 Korean Americans, an what not)
This proves US could rescue the abductees without weapons. Something Japan has been failing to achieve
Desert Tortoise
No. Consider the costs of a second Korean War. American analysts reckon there would be 100,000 dead **per hour **on the first day as Nork artillery fired into the big apartment blocks in and around Seoul and Incheon. The US has forces there to prevent that kind of carnage, not initiate it!
kennyG
They would start a war with NK if the abductees are American?
Samit Basu
Sorry, I meant 1910.

There is no point asking Emmanuel. According to high level North Korean defectors, the account that Kim Jong Il gave to Koizumi during their summit in Pyongyang is correct, because Kim believed a diplomatic normalization and $10 billion in compensation from Japan was imminent.
I mean, Yokota Megumi's own biological daughter, proven by DNA test, told her grandparents Megumi was dead, yet Yokotas and Japanese government won't believe the biological daughter's account, so what more can North Korea do?
@Hokkaidoboy
North Korea wouldn't exist today if
Japan never annexed Korea in 2010.
Or least Japan surrendered to the US after the battle of Okinawa, saving 500K Japanese lives as a bonus.North Korea is a creation of Imperial Japan's actions, and Japan has to live with its consequences.

Diplomacy.

People don't seem to realize there are only four ways to deal with foreign nations who are acting in ways another nation does not agree with:
do nothing
voice displeasure
sanctions
warThat's it. The US has both voiced displeasure, and placed sanctions on NK. They are not going to start a war with NK over Japanese abductees. So you're right, there's nothing the US can do.
Desert Tortoise
How? There is literally nothing the US can do to free them. Nothing.
Desert Tortoise
I would be curious to know what possible leverage the US might have to coax DPRK to free kidnapped Japanese citizens?

I feel sorry for the families of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea. Another reason why I feel sorry for them is they are asking a DO NOTHING ambassador Rahm Emanuel to solve this problem. This guy was the mayor of Chicago he could not get anything done in his city council with out a "BRIBE". I am sorry the Biden administration sent such a person but if these families expect this worthless crook to do anything to help solve this issue they could forget it. I am sorry but its the truth!. Pleading a case to this guy will just go in one ear and out of the next he has no negotiation skills at all. This guy couldn't play rock, paper scissors. He is just plain terrible, research his stay in Chicago as mayor and you will learn he is worthless!
Richard Gallagher
Rahm Emanuel. One of the least diplomatic individuals to serve in any government. With the charm of a rabid dog. That being a Chihuahua.
Khuniri
Rahm Emanuel...Wow! One can scarcely think of anyone more qualified or better able to deal with this knotty issue, the only other contenders being Hunter Biden and Dennis Rodman. Perhaps the three of them might team up and fly off to Pyongyang to hobnob with Kim Jong-un. (They all have so much in common!)

Perception gap seems too wide and too deep between gaijins even living here for decades and genuine victims' families/those genuinely hope them to be returned. Alas
TARA TAN KITAOKA
Japan should help themselves.
Aly Rustom
Hear! Hear!
Aly Rustom
exactly!

I think Emanuel invited them to remind Japan not to side with Russia in Ukraine-Russia war.

election time or government corruption scandal time.

Being here when these stories REALLY made headlines reminds me of reports of the families being told by various police and other officials that their sons and daughters had most likely just runaway. It was the perfect excuse for the officials here to do nothing. Now decades later, these families (and many in Japan) expect other countries to get involved? SMFH.
I feel truly sorry for these families who have been victims of not only the North Koreans but also the police, politicians, and other officials here in Japan. Obviously, it is also pure hypocrisy that the LDP uses the pain of these broken families for their own agenda.
kennyG
snatched away
kennyG
Think about your beloved daughter snapped away like that, thrown into sandbags in broad daylight
and taken away by foreign intruders and many decades later, received someone else's ash with letter
" She gone mad and died"
kennyG
Why the families ask US to get involved? Isn't it just obvious? The US is much stronger and have several strong cards to use against NK.
Another reason for Japan to scrap Article 9 to prepare for the dark era to come
When Japan and the families give all up, that is when Japan completely crash Chong-ryon and revoke SPR
of North Korean Zainichi , that can be done even before touching Article 9
Aly Rustom
Um speak for yourself. And for your information, the issue is NOT always in the news. Nice try though
RedShoelaces
Because you never watch Japanese news programs or read a Japanese newspaper. If you had, you would see the issue is always in the news.
smithinjapan
I'm sorry for these people, but this is not a priority to the world. If the kin of those abducted were not constantly used as political pawns when the approval ratings of politicians here were low, they might not have such expectations every time a new PM here, US ambassador or other representative, president, congress person, or anyone else comes into power.
Mark
The U.S could not save it's own citizen Mr. Warmbier from these EVILS, I doubt very much if Mr. Emanuel could do anything.
Sometimes the best thing to do is to Pray and hope for the best.
indigo
Japan is just teasing N-korea to spark a WAR at this moment. what else??
Aly Rustom
why does this issue only come up just before an election? you never hear anything about this issue for ages and then PRESTO it pops up pre election. Interesting.
Meiyouwenti
If Japan had been a normal country with functioning armed forces and anti-spy laws to ferret out North Korean agents, these abductions could never have happened.
TrevorPeace
I think it's time to get over it. Grief deserves respect, but grievances for something you can't change is the same as revenge. And less respectable.
Michael Machida
Why does Japan need America to do this for them? Why doesn't Japan do this for themselves?
Hokkaidoboy
On the Megumi case
That dynasty is beyond the imagination of evil. Just cruel, nasty, and soulless, even if that claim is the truth.
