It is for people who help the LDP win elections.

Which is majority.

No, it really isn't. Voter turnout in the 2021 lower house election was about 55% and the LDP didn't get a majority of the votes. It appears that only about a quarter of the electorate vote for the LDP. Not a majority at all.

Let me remind you once again the most recent polls that show party affiliations in Japan, even in the midst of crticism of Kishida cabinet:

DP: 36.2%

CDPJ: 4.8%

Renovation: 5.1%

All other parties: less than 3%

That poll may be skewed to favour the LDP and it still doesn't make them good. 36.2% is pitiful. Any semi-competent opposition would obliterate them.

The only thing Abe successfully accomplished was showing how deeply connected the ruling party is to the Unification church.

Abenomics did nothing except leave us with Kuroda and his bubble era ways of thinking.

Buttering up Trump really did nothing.

Territorial issues, kidnappings, etc…all a big pile of nothing really.

So taxpayers should fund some funeral for a guy who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth?

Japan is not a socialist country.

It is for people who help the LDP win elections.

ReasonandWisdomNipponToday  02:35 am JST

40% in a democratic country is actually not bad.

In a democratic country which is supposed to have majority rule, anything less than 50% is bad.

Yoon in Korea is around 28%.

40% in a democratic country is actually not bad. Considering the Korean Unification Church disaster on Japanese land. Economic stagnation since the Plaza Accord. Assassination of former PM Abe. 2 years of Covid. 40% is good considering everything that happened.

According to the article the public aren't giving the government much credit for it.

Japanese people do not expect much from their government - they never did and they will never do it. Japan is not a socialist country.

"They will remember that he hasn't done anything at all about rising prices or any of their other problems."

Actually price control - that's something Japan is doing better than others.

According to the article the public aren't giving the government much credit for it.

Here is a comparison between USA (vs Japan) for inflation rate this year.

I doubt many people care very much if it's worse in other countries.

Besides, I doubt Japanese people expect much from goverment. They never do.

Maybe, some of the cabinet members don't have the best interests of the Japanese people in mind.

Maybe, they've got the best interests of "others" in mind and actually look forward to the downfall of Japan.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

If I speak with Japanese people and taxidriver is not the connection to the Unification Church a problem. The problem is that the government don't care enough about the problems of Japan and it's people. The people don't want to hear anymore about this Chruch thing. This is just takt the eyes of the real problems. Many Organisationen and NGOs want influence the government not just a religion what want to see its values in the government. This is normal.

"Looks like Kishida's days are numbered."

Probablly not.

REASON 1. The next election is Oct 31 2025! A long way to go. People will not remember anything about the state funeral for Abe or Unification Church.

They will remember that he hasn't done anything at all about rising prices or any of their other problems.

REASON 2. Many Japanese people may be disapointed by the party they support but not to the extent of switching a party affiliation.

Here is the result of the most recent polls that asked "Which Party Do You Support?":

LDP: 36.2%

CDPJ: 4.8%

Renovation: 5.1%

All other parties: less than 3%

The other parties were just as weak when the LDP got rid of Abe and then Suga.

How saddening to watch Japanese people become poorer and poorer-who would have thought that this would happen?

shogun36Today  12:35 pm JST

How man more useless "leaders" does the LDP have, lined up to be the next PM?

It seems like they are just churning out endless amounts of incompetent fools.

This is the problem with a deeply entrenched hereditary oligarchy that doesn't face any serious challenges to its position, e.g. an opposition party like Labour in the UK or the Republicans in the USA (maybe not totally great examples).

Is there not ONE decent person to lead anything, correctly?

No.

Just wipe the slate clean and hire 150 new recruits.

They can't possibly do any worse.

That will never happen. The LDP could purge a lot of its most useless members but they would just take their support networks, connections, donors, voters and cash with them and get re-elected as independents.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

There hasnt been a worthwhile PM since Koizumi and then Obuchi before him. The rest are just taking their turns sitting in the chair, and letting all the old-farts behind the scenes run everything!

The public has lost what was left of trust and patience. They want a plan that concerns them, their jobs, their salaries, their kids, their health and retirements, their income and their living expenses

I imagine something like that would seriously ruffle the feathers of important LDP backers with other agendas.

and not some wonkey PR-scheme like Tokyo/Sapporo/Iwo Jima Olympics, no plan to honor His Shadiness, no なんちゃってagencies like the Children or Digital agencies, some super-duper fast Linia train or Harry-Potter-like magical My Number cardathingy.

It's much easier for politicians with limited intellects like your average 10th generation LDP hack to come up with gimmicks than real solutions to actual problems.

Who cares, this is a one party authoritarian state, whose economy is nosediving. I maybe biased because I can’t vote, but at least I have the right to pay taxes!

Just wait until next month, when a new fiscal year begins and...everyone in Japan hikes prices bigly!

From Reuters: "Nearly 80% of Japan's listed food companies have either raised prices this year or plan to do so, four times the ratio of last year, according to a survey by private research firm Teikoku Databank.

"These rises affect more than 20,000 food items, which will go up by an average of 14%. One-third of the increase is scheduled to take effect in October, a sign that inflationary pressure could intensify later this year."

He go NY during this storm, his government will sink like a stone

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Nothing to worry about here folks.

there isn’t an election for a while. Once that comes around he will step down, replace the glorious LDP leader. then win an outstanding election, then become unpopular again. Rinse and repeat and you’ll be in power forever. Of course it might help if the stupid opposition could actually have one or two united parties instead of “oooh it’s Myyyyy party” and I’ll cry if I want to. Absolutely no point being in opposition I’d you can’t win anything for the people.

Kishida San get the moonies or you and you cronies in the LDP to cough up for Abe's funeral and this may improve....

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I think he'll cling on to power for a little while longer as there is no national election in the near future. But come election year, if he doesn't pull those numbers up, he'll be disposed off like Suga and replaced by another figurehead and the people will buy it. Yawn...

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

numbers are still high and overrated for guy who does nothing and its completely resultless one.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

40% or about half the support that Putin gets.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

There are things Kishida "should have done" or "could have done" to boost the approval rating. Now it seems too late.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Time for a change of front man but the LDP which is the real problem will remain...

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Spoiler Alert : They stay in power, regardless.

9 ( +16 / -7 )

Does any Japanese politician have more than 40%?

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Poll numbers dropped? Could it be because he is one of the worst Prime Minsters every to roam the face of the Earth?

1 ( +7 / -6 )

I am surprised it's at 40%. I will bet it is, in reality, much lower, as only a little over 1,000 people actually answered the survey.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

It is probably lower! The Japanese government likes to fudge numbers. It is a characteristic of Abe's party!

That is right! Where is Kishida's "New Capitalisim"?

It is so new, that it hasn't arrived, yet?

it rests in the exact same spot as Abe's three arrows touched down....

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Looks like Kishida's days are numbered. He's not actually going to do anything about any of these problems, and the more ineffectual he appears the more the support rate is going to drop. All the other third generation non-entities are probably lining up already to take his place.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

However, some 80.1 percent of respondents also said the party's response to links with the church was insufficient, and 77.6 percent said they do not think the LDP will be able to sever its connections to it.

In the beginning of the article it is described that the public is experiencing "jitters" over the revelations of the ties between the LDP and church but these numbers look more like widespread and justly deserved distrust.

What could be expected when as usual Kishida leaves it up to the honor system for his politicos to police their own corruption.

And does nothing to curb the deceptive practices of the church.

Maybe Kishida can use the excuse of the Abe assassination and Unification Church controversy for the lack of any benefit to the public of his grand plan for a "New Capitalism".

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Cabinet support rate drops to 40.2%: poll

Just another few point it will go below 40%.

What's wrong, people don't like New Capitalism, weak yen or controversial funeral?
