Prospective Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to create a new ministerial post for economic security in a veiled counter to alleged technology theft by China, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday.

This sounds like it a step to secure his right wing bona fides. It also shows how out of touch the LDP has become.

How about securing the economic security of the labor force of the Japanese public? Whose working situations have become increasingly precarious during the pandemic, no thanks in part to the trickle down response of the LDP, which subsidized businesses which were then allowed to lay off staff, whom did not receive any individual subsidies.

The puppet master pretends he is angry because he says his puppet is chewing through the strings? I don’t think so. After seeing the cabinet stacked with puppet masters supporters. Smoke and mirrors and nothing for the public but more pain to support big business. How about a cabinet position dedicated to improving the public’s lives.

""alleged technology theft by China""

China did not really steal !! the rest of the world gave them everything they were looking for by moving factories and technologies to China to increase profits, it's called GREED and short sighted.

""alleged technology theft by China""

China did not really steal !! the rest of the world gave them everything they were looking for by moving factories and technologies to China to increase profits, it's called GREED and short sighted.

I remember talking to a fairly high-ranking manager from a major electronics firm some 15 years ago who told me that many Japanese engineers would work in Tokyo all week, then fly over to Seoul at weekends to work for Korean electronics companies. The engineers were so badly paid and poorly treated they had no qualms about making extra money on the side in this manner.

I expressed my doubts but the person swore it was true. A couple of years later a manager for a different firm confirmed the story. Last year Samsung was the world's top manufacturer of smartphones and LG was ranked 7th.

The story of Shuji "Slave" Nakamura, the inventor of the blue LED for which he received the Nobel Prize in physics is salutary. He's now an American.

https://optics.org/article/7307

While pursuing his research at Nichia, Nakamura is reported to have received no technological support, other than his research and development budget. Nichia is also said to have banned its researchers from publishing their work at this time.

"I couldn't get money from the company [Nichia] and I couldn't get money from the government when I submitted a proposal. That was tough," said Nakamura.

Ask Nakamura what else he enjoys about his new life in the US and he is quick to highlight the contrasts between his life as a researcher in Japan and his current position. "I enjoy a lot of freedom here in the US. This country and Europe are very democratic," he said. "Japan is a bit of a communist country and has a very bureaucratic system compared with the US and European countries. And there is no co-operation between professors."

Given the snail's pace of change in this country one doubts that anything has changed since then.

More jobs for the boys and less for the plebs…

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is reported to be steaming mad with the new lineup of LDP personnel that Kishida has announced, even saying that's not "an Abe puppet government". He wants Sanae Takaichi, his faithful protegee and an ultra-conservative, to be installed as Secretary General and eventually Prime Minister (Daily Gendai Digital: 10/2/2021) .

7 ( +9 / -2 )

An entire new ministry, eh? That sounds pretty severe.

Prospective Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to create

This is the most honest JT has been for months regarding the government. about time.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is reported to be steaming mad

LOL, Abe plans a comeback he doesn't care about Sanae Takaichi he just stepped down to remove thoughts of a dictatorship.

Let's hope he appoints someone with skills in economic security, and not just one of the regular faces like Taro Aso. Let's also hope that the appointee understands it wouldn't be a great start to go swanning off to Yasukuni during the first weeks in charge.

Creating an entire ministry against an imagined enemy! Maybe he'll also appoint a genius who's never used a computer. Again.

Good job Kishida. That’s what we need.

More tax money wasting positions that do absolutely nothing for anyone but the ones “employed.”

Hopefully they all get 100% pension after retirement, full benefit and bonuses for as long as they live as well.

Good way to bury Japan even more. It’s not like this country needed to evolve or anything.

The comments here are more than a bit over the top. Abe "dictatorship"? lol. Japan "failing to lead in technology" when compared to Copy-Paste-Copy China? lol.

25 years after Japan was absolutely destroyed, utterly and completely, Japan had scores and scores of internationally recognized, economically innovative and extremely valued Globally Branded Companies which were, and remain, on the cutting edge of most crucial cutting-edge tech. You yourselves can name at least a dozen of these brands, all of which are probably still on the forefront of New Tech. You'd miss these companies if they stopped with their innovations.

However: 50 years after (real) Dictators of China finished destroying the Chinese economy and cultural heritage, the "People's Republic" has...NO real innovators in industry, NO global brands which aren't straight-up cookie-cutter copies of other Brands using copied/stolen tech, or else stock-inflated domestic clone companies which don't have to compete with outside entities since the Government shields them so much inside the "Motherland". Name a single Chinese company which, if dismantled tomorrow, would be irreplaceable to the world? Alibaba, WeChat? lol...lol! Come on...

As for creating an entire new Ministry? (Not just a new Minister?) Well, I'm not sure that's all that necessary...more likely that Kishida needs a few more "Cabinet Seats" to get every tiny LDP faction properly "represented". (I mean, could they not fit this new, admittedly important, economic division into the already-existing Departments of...say: Finance, Defense, Economy-Trade-Industry, Industrial Competitiveness, Building National Resilience, Regulatory Reform, Economic and Fiscal Policy, Intellectual Property Strategy, or Science and Technology?

All these economically focused ministries ALREADY EXIST! Take your pick, but resist expanding the bureaucracy even more, Kishida!

I knew a company that fabricated aftermarket automotive products and sent them to china to be mass produced.

They got their product, then 3 months later ebay was flooded with the exact same product at 1/4 the price.

It's not technology theft, Japan lack innovation and unable to keep up to the rest of the world.

I think the bigger problem is that Japan is simply out of sync with the rest of the world, thinking they can go it alone in this new globalized environment. Even when they do come up superior technology, the seem unable to market it or apply it outside of Japan. Japan desperately needs to open up and engage with the world, not just pretend to open but continue doing things the "Japanese way."

So no surprise that someone else picks up on Japanese tech and sells it to the world. The lack of English and lack of interest in the world keeps them out of the loop.

"...but resist expanding the bureaucracy even more, Kishida!"

Excellent comment! However, he IS the bureaucracy...

Kishida to create new ministerial post for economic security

the new minister is expected to craft a national strategy designed to block a technology drain from the country.

It's not technology theft, Japan lack innovation and unable to keep up to the rest of the world.

Japan ranks second in patents for person after South Korea. Defending that intellectual property is vital to the economy of Japan.

Look at that pic! The guy is already thinking, "Look... I just wanted to say I'm PM... I didn't actually want any of these problems to deal with!!"

…in a veiled counter to alleged technology theft by China

Sounds good to me, but no need to be coy about it.

@James this is a Kyodo article reprinted by JT. Kyodo must be fuming this guy got the vote and thus they call him prospective.

How can Chinese steal the things you never owned?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Years ago at a conference in Tokyo, a security executive for a leading Japanese electronics manufacturer was displaying a range of counterfeit goods produced in China, 99.999% identical to the original with just subtle changes to the logo.

However one item that stood out was an original production from the Chinese counterfeiter, that the Japanese company did not make, but was satisfying a gap in the market!

Maybe if the LDP smile a little, and stop with that constipated look they always have on their face, they can relate to their public

Any man using cuff links with cuff buttons (who uses cuff links anyway) is obviously not savy enough to dress himself. But dumb enough to be PM. These people need their own play ground separated from the normality the rest of us battle to enjoy.

What Japanese do good,is build train station, but do not make it easy for Japanese to catch them

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

A little bit pathetic in my opinion .

economic security in a veiled counter to alleged technology theft by China ,sources familiar with the matter said.

Yeah right ! Very familiar with allegations and shaming but not willing to admit to war crimes or technology theft done by Japan.

And where does Japan think its culture and technology came from ?

Of course China dislikes Japan.

Look at history.

China hasn't forgotten what Japan did.

Without China Japan's economy doesn't do so well anyway

Japan really does feel threatened and really does fear China.

Because the Chinese take Japanese pie in the sky ideas was and make money, selling goods to American
