Here's an innovative idea: Politicians that have qualifications beyond their daddy or granddaddy having been prime minister.

Family politics sabotaged my home country and its going to do the same thing to Japan.. People should stop electing people like this. They aRe not even fit to run the government ND have any basic knowledge ..the only thing they can do is loot more money from us, save more money in Swiss banks and make his son future prime minister .

Agree. But as long as the fossils and their descendants are running Japan Inc's fossil economy, I'm not going to hold my breath. And I find it hard to believe Mr Koizumi will be willing to do anything different from what the fossils have been doing the last few decades.

Innovation should start with better ways to conserve energy and resources.

Unless resource poor Japan wants to continue to remain a fossilized economy reliant on the US, Russia, Gulf theocracies and others.

While climate change is a global issue there are many more important domestic issues for Japan that need to be addressed. Child care, aged care, mental health care, stagnant salaries and more that need innovative thinking to resolve.

Its kind of ironic he comes out with this environmentally based statement the day after TEPCO announces they will dump all their stored radioactive water into the ocean.

Everyone complaining that he was selected only because his dad was a prime minister; did anyone even read what he is promising? He sounds like the kind of polititian that they need more of in this country.

Is it possible, even in the slightest bit, that he got into politics not because of his dad's connections, but because he looked up to his dad and wanted to do the same thing? I know I wanted to follow in my dad's footsteps to become a doctor; unfortunately i didnt have the discipline for it and ended up in IT.

His father is an opportunist and a hypocrite. When he was prime minister, he did nothing against TEPCO which in 2002 was caught in a giant scandal where they have lied and falsified about critical safety checks since the 70's. Nobody was prosecuted, no punishing measures against the company were taken, Koisumi and his government protected them. We know how the TEPCO's ignorance for safety ended.

He is exactly like his father. He tries to give a better image and smooth his appearance. But he is just part of the Japanese oligarchy. Why should he be different? He was educated and molded in the same system.

I am sorry but this is naive. His family background basically brings him with minimal effort to a very high paid job and high privileges. That's why he is in politics.

Japanese politics has been like this for over a thousand years. hasn't stopped the whiny foreigner from coming. I wonder why

"a rising political star in Japan" is, quite simply, bad reporting and bad writing.

He may very well be an excellent human being and turn out to be an excellent politician. The latter is not something I expect at all, but I'll focus on the writing itself.

What are the reasons to support such a phrase? Without that, it comes across as nothing but propaganda fluff.

The author should be embarrassed.

This is or should be a vital role. From his name, he will carry more clout than other LDP bigwigs, and it would be good if that could help him force through some changes. Politicians should not need famous fathers to get things done, but that might just be the way it is. The ends justifying the means, etc.

If he is indeed a reformer/agent of change, I hope he does not get bogged down with perennial problems like Fukushima and whaling.

I hope that he sticks to ecology and doesn't get involved in the economy. Look at what Koizumi's USA-loving father did to Japan. Imitating the USA, he losened all the employment laws that protected workers, and now half of the workers are employed by dispatch agencies (who make all the money), part time, etc. That is why young people don't get married and have kids.

They are pretty much intertwined these days. That's why ecology is a political issue instead of something everybody can agree on. Very few leaders want to save the planet. They want to gain power/money while appearing to save it.

The worst thing that could happen for Koizumi Shinjiro, is if he becomes Abe's puppet. I would like Koizumi Shinjiro to hold onto his father's (Junichiro Koizumi) ideals of Japan. Becoming Abe's puppet would ruin Koizumi Shinjiro's political future.

People likes Koizumi Shinjiro because he is young, and primarily because he is Junichiro Koizumi's son. Don't forget who fostered you Koizumi Shinjiro!

For such a young man (never having had a real job) to take on responsibility over our lives in Japan, to make decisions which will have an effect on future generations is unbelievable!

Junichiro Koizumi was regarded as an outsider, even within his own party. It remains to be seen how much his son has adopted the insider maverick streak from his father. And

I trust the findings of NOAA scientists and the thousands of other scientists who say the climate is changing and human activity is contributing.

I don't trust the scientists paid by global oil corporations, big ranching (among others) and their 'financiers', i.e. those with the most power and those with the most to gain by keeping the fossil economy dominant, who deny climate is changing.

Or those like Trump claiming it's a hoax.

The former PM’s son has been carefully groomed to represent and protect the interests of big businesses and multinationals. He has been foremost among the LDP lawmakers urging the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives to disband so that foreign agribusiness giants can buy up Japanese farmland. But I remain optimistic. Koizumi is turning into a middle-aged man and in 10 years female voters won’t be falling on over him anymore.

Fighting climate change ain't rocket science. Introduce legally binding standards on thermal performance in buildings, ie, thick insulation and triple glazed windows.

Developed countries do this, but Japan refuses to. The priority is to protect the profits of the construction industry and sell devices that need to consume energy to work.

has been touted as a potential future prime minister and has recently drawn the spotlight for his surprise marriage to TV personality Christel Takigawa.

Well, one way to make sure that you keep getting this kind of sweetheart coverage from the media is to marry one of their own. Whether intentional or not, this was probably a smart political move by Shinjiro.

So the promising new comer of LDP, which have the population love needed to overthrow or succeed the old clique because he is the son of, is being given a ministry future looking (environment and social reform) which will give him the interesting opportunity to deal with lot of easy and mainstream subject like the management of Fukushima water.

Could be a good way to make him obedient or smash him to oblivion for the next 20 years or so.

I do not know him personally, so no idea what he really thinks and wants to fight for but after the politics washing, I have quite a doubt anything strong will come out of it.

He's been in politics for about 12 years and he has only posed for cameras, reading speeches written for him by his marketing staff. He inherited his Dad's MP position. Today, he's in government because he's got married with the mascot of Olympics.
