Even if Suga ends up taking the fall, my fear is that the LDP will just replace him with yet another spineless old buffoon that'll sit on his hands and waste time on nonsensical policies (like the alchohol ban) that do nothing to materially benefit ordinary people.

I would also caution anyone taking this to mean that the LDP will lose the upcoming election; we've seen it before - low approval ratings don't necessarily translate into an election loss in Japan, especially not with how bad the opposition is at siezing the moment and presenting themselves as a legitimate alternative (to say nothing of the broken election system and general voter apathy).

Right - the most consistent voters, i.e. elderly folks in over-represented rural areas, tend to vote for their local LDP good ol'boy rather than the party as a whole or whoever's Prime Minister. What might help is if one opposition party could present a really strong message of what it stood for AND raise enough funds to field as many candidates as the LDP and Komeito.

"nonsensical policies (like the alchohol ban) that do nothing to materially benefit ordinary people."

Do you mean nonsesncial policies such as:

1) the lowest covid death rate in the G7?

2) Free Vaccinations for everyone in Japan.

3) the lowest unemployment rate in the G7.

4) A record budget surplus

5) a Japan that is both safe at home and abroad.

6 A Japan that saw none of the riots that the west saw. -  United States Capitol attack just to name one.

7) the lowest number of covid cases in the G7

Thanks for your concern but I like the nonsensical policy of the LDP. Japan is much better shape than any country in the world. Not bad for old men.

How’s the quality of life going? Sure it’s great for the LDP. Sucks for most anthers.

You are right and I actually hope Suga makes it to the next election because he will be liability that will cause a lot of people cast their vote somewhere else. Even though Jiminto will retain power through the skewed electoral system and the inaka voters as Simon pointed out.

Japan is fine is some aspects but also in worse shape than many other countries in other areas by many different metrics. Japan,s old men that run the govt here are the cause of most Japan,s downfalls. Thats a fact.

Lower house elections in September could see the LDP lose especially if there's an Olympic covid problem. People are angry.

35.9%, too high as support rate of incompetent government.

Do you mean nonsesncial policies such as:

First of all, why are you trying to sidestep the issue here? Do you not agree that the alcohol ban was a complete waste of time and resources? Don't you think the policians and/or bureaucrats who sat down to decide this couldn't have come up with something less idiotic?

1) the lowest covid death rate in the G7?

On the face of it, this is fair, but it is not as low as that of its neighbors in the region. On the whole,

2) Free Vaccinations for everyone in Japan.

There is nothing special about that. Not to mention that Japan is now in lack of vaccines. As we saw in another recent article, vaccination has to be slowed down. Japan is really far behind on this front - it also matters, because most people who die are the unvaccinated.

3) the lowest unemployment rate in the G7.

They like to cook the books with this one. Unemployment is artificially kept low by the 1/3 of the workforce that are part-timers and non-regular workers. What good is it that people are employed to be essentially wage slaves barely staying afloat?

4) A record budget surplus

What budget surplus? I literally can't find data on this anywhere beyond a vague forecast of a surplus possibly coming around* *2029.

5) a Japan that is both safe at home and abroad.

What an extraordinary achievement for a country that has not been at war for almost 76 years.

6 A Japan that saw none of the riots that the west saw. - United States Capitol attack just to name one.

Nothing special. Japanese people are generally, for lack of a better term, far too docile to riot, but the lack of riots is not unique to Japan among developed countries.

7) the lowest number of covid cases in the G7

Doubtful, especially with the pitiful lack of actual testing over the last many months.

It's amazing the approval rate actually rises above single figures.

18 ( +18 / -0 )

And next election they will win convincingly without any problems. They do whatever they like such as holding unpopular Olympics as they know this. since so many don’t vote that 34% who will vote is enough to win.

The polls are a minor inconvenience. Worst case they put a new puppet in the top spot and the polls will go up dramatically.

Suga's got three things going for him in his favor. It's not that bad.Abe got into the 20s % range. The opposition is lame AF,that LDP remaining in power isn't threatened. And people will still vote for them in the general election no matter what. And the lower the turnout, the better it is for them.

That's a statistic, not a policy.

2) Free Vaccinations for everyone in Japan.

It still seems to be awfully difficult to get one, though.

3) the lowest unemployment rate in the G7.

How's that a result of LDP policies?

4) A record budget surplus

Really? Here was me thinking they were running horrendous deficits. How specifically has the LDP brought this miracle about?

5) a Japan that is both safe at home and abroad.

That's more in spite of the LDP and its sabre rattling than because of it.

6 A Japan that saw none of the riots that the west saw. - United States Capitol attack just to name one.

How exactly have the LDP managed to bring this about? Can you be specific?

7) the lowest number of covid cases in the G7

It's never an indication of a convincing argument when you repeat yourself.

Thanks for your concern but I like the nonsensical policy of the LDP. Japan is much better shape than any country in the world. Not bad for old men.

You've just rattled off a list of things that the LDP are hardly even responsible for.

Excellent posts!

Of course there’s currently no real opposition or threat of losing elections, so they can feel very safe even with Suga, but anyway, those low and sinking support percentage rates could quickly and unexpected bring a wish for quite substantial change within the electors and people, if not handled by the party strategists now.

I don't understand why his support is so low. I really like Suga san. He makes me laugh every day.

That is pretty high all things considered.

"It's amazing the approval rate actually rises above single figures."

A lot of companies and people get easy money when they vote LDP (at the expense of the rest of US).

Tell that to the people who took part in the poll.

A lot of people they ask for these polls probably don't even know there are other parties to choose from, or can't remember what they're called or what they stand for.
