Be interesting to know their reason for seeking Japanese nationality.

I don't think so. The reasons could by anything, from a personal sense of loyalty and pride to possibly getting on 生活保護 which is available to all Japanese citizens. What I find interesting is how the WWII Allied powers implementation of stripping Imperial Japan's former colonies without any concern for individuals resulted in cases like this article. Not to mention the problems it caused for the Zainichi Koreans.

My question is why they even want a japanese nationality at that age and when they are living in Taiwan. Do they get paid if they win the lawsuit?

The article doesn't actually say they live in Taiwan (in fact it says Yang is in Tokyo). There have been a series of similar lawsuits over the decades from Korean and Taiwanese who lost their Japanese nationality and as far as I know all of them have been from people who live in Japan.

Sankei has followed this case since 2019

If you believe his statement of opinions at the Tokyo district court held on Oct 12 2021 as plaintiff’s oral proceedings

Yang Fu-cheng stated “ There are many Taiwanese who wish to have their Japanese nationality reinstated. We filed a law suit representing those people”

“We fought desperately in the war which Japan’s existence was staked on. We have never forgotten even for a moment that we are Japanese. We want to close our days as Japanese”

Being asked why they are seeking to have their Japanese nationality reinstated rather than to be naturalized, he stated “ We wish you all know what Japan has done for Taiwan, then you could probably be proud of a nation Japan”

Can’t think of nothing else but they want to end their days as Japanese. What a difference.

If you can believe those blaming, you should also be able to believe admiring, when both making legal statements at the courts during oral proceedings

But the court rejected the claim, saying the document by the United Nations is not legally binding and that there is "no international law that requires the consent of an individual when his nationality changes due to a change in territorial rule."

It was an expected result, but I understand the value of trying anyway. For people in their situation being recognized as Japanese is more important than becoming Japanese.

Yang obviously feels that he is Japanese and it is suggested he fought for Japan during WWII which many non Japanese did.

What the judges would be concerned with is the fact that Japanese nationality is inherited from your parents and if they created a precedent where non Japanese citizens who fought for Japan had their nationality re-instated what this would mean for the future.

The Japanese people need to develop the understanding that diversity equals good and is not something to be frightened off so that a 99 year old man that fought for his country can die peacefully as a Japanese.

Japanese confuse nationality with race, Japanese would be classified as Asian
