A world without nuclear weapons will never exist. Such would require something that is unobtainable, trust. Trust that all parties are in cooperation with the agreement. It would require solid trust among all the worlds countries and that simply is not going to happen.

"...But Japan, the sole country to have suffered the devastation of atomic bombings, opposed the resolution.."

This actually speaks volumes about Japan's real position.

For or against nuclear weaponry doesn't enter the equation.

You can't play the "only country to have...." card while every year proposing the elimination of nuclear weapons, while every year refusing to ally yourself with the for prohibition side.

Cake and eat it.

Some nukes are required for planetary defense against asteroids and comets. They could be the difference between survival of us all and utter destruction.

Wow, Planetary Defense? Makes sense to haves nukes for this and now I understand why Pres Trump suggested that we nuke attack hurricane Dorian as it was barreling down toward Florida. Thank goodness the hurricane stayed in the water and the military did not think nuking a hurricane was a good idea.

Not just the nukes but drilling experts to drill 800 feet to drop the nuke in a place where it will blow it into 2 pieces.

 China and Russia opposed it

Where's the outrage?

I think it speaks volumes about who really controls the Japanese government.

The United States government outspends China on military spending by 5 times. It spends an equal amount to the entire rest of the world on war and war hardware. Murder weapons are not just big business in America, they are BEHEMOTH business...a true leviathan...Cthulu....Satan incarnate. The truly evil have taken over and peace minded Americans are either a thing of the past or an utterly powerless tiny minority. The U.S. war profiteers controlling the government would not let go of landmines either.

Fewer nukes, will make the world safer and healthier.

Wow what an amazing idea! Totally disarm so North Korea, China, Russia, and soon Iran are the only ones with nuclear weapons. I don’t know who originally came up with this idea but it’s genius. What could possibly go wrong?

@Norman Goodman: Murder weapons are not just big business in America, they are BEHEMOTH business...a true leviathan...Cthulu....Satan incarnate.

Murder weapons? Just think about what the world would be like now if America didn’t have “murder weapons” over the last century.

Sarcasm aside, I suspect you don't. There is a difference between asteroids and hurricanes.

You seem a bit confused. I am not so much complaining that America or anyone is armed. I am complaining that America is way, Way, WAY over-armed and won't even try to help the world get rid of nukes. That said, imagine if NO ONE had murder weapons over the last century.

Totally disarm so North Korea, China, Russia, and soon Iran are the only ones with nuclear weapons.

Uh...no? The idea is for everyone to disarm their nukes together. After all, if America can tell that Saddam Hussein has so much as sarin gas shells, surely it can tell if China and North Korea actually disposed of some nukes...right?

Besides, America alone can pretty much nuke the entire planet into oblivion like 20 times over. How about reduce that figure to say....5 times over? At least its less chance of an accident happening. Russia and the U.S. have like 88 percent of all the world's nukes. Its pure dangerous insanity. And if you cannot call indiscriminate nukes designed to wipe out civilian cities "murder weapons" what can you? Those things need to go. If soldier types want to go into a field and kill each other for sport that's one thing. But us civilians don't want any part of goons' blood lust.

japan can not get the nuclear weapon... really?

japan already nuked this planet with fukushima, not enough???

we will know the real impact in the future.

Japan is not in position to speak. start to stop all your nuclear power plants first. each of them are a ticking Bomb

Probably not. Don't believe all the movies.

Any object discovered far enough in advance can be nudged using pico-gravity far enough in advance.

Blowing up an asteroid will just make a larger debris field to hit more places around the Earth.

Japan has the high moral ground when it comes to nuclear weapons. Using that pulpit to remind the rest of the world is an excellent use. People do listen.

This is unfair. Japan is a country with varied political factions, like most developed countries.

Would you equally criticize all the peace initiatives founded in USA, since the USA is more invested in war than any other country? The peace groups should just give up and fall into line?

The Japanese government basically cannot sign agree to this resolution with the consent of the US. So, instead, various political groups, mayors and other government bodies in Japan continue to try to convince all countries (including Japan) to agree to this. One way is by going through the UN, as they are doing here.

Japan is not a monolith, so please give credit where credit is due.

Millions would be alive. Successive US governments (Republican and Democrat) have killed and maimed and bombed so many countries, they have propped up dictatorships and meddled with sovereign states.

The Great Satan is indeed an apt moniker for a country that not only exports murder, but celebrates it, too.

Noble attempts though people are more interested in defending the environment these days than preventing a Nuclear war.

As a reminder of what happens when a Nuke goes off.
