Kishida provided no further information on what type of support will be extended,

Typical and to be expected, wouldn't want to anger the base.

Though, Russian and Ukrainian pubs are a thing in Japan. Maybe the idea of an influx of young, blonde female refugees from the Ukraine will be what it takes to spur a paradigm shift in the Japanese stance towards immigration?

These are not people trying to get away from areas in North Africa. They look like any European family that you would live next door to.

To put it bluntly, these are not refugees from Syria, these are refugees from Ukraine... They're Christian, they're white, they're very similar.

Japan is doing a good thing. But that doesn't stop the J-bashers. lol

What had happened to the help promised by America and G7 partners???

Yeah? So how many refugees will Japan accept?

Several million! Japan is smaller than California and has 126 million inhabitants. Those suggesting to bring million more here are usually the very same people who keep whining about overcrowded trains, tiny apartments etc..

Yeah come here refugees, no waiting lists for day-care centers and plenty of space in cities! More fun when the Big One hits.

@ossanAmerica,

'Japan is doing a good thing. But that doesn't stop the J-bashers. lol.'

Let's see how many of these refugees Japan will allow to settle in Nippon when all is said and done.

Me thinks..........it will be a super low number.

It’s good to hear that Japan is going to support these real refugees. Over the years especially in Japan a lot of people claiming to be refugees ( not real refugees ) try to get the visa and this has tarnished the humanitarian refugee status! Ukraine citizens fleeing now due to the invasion are the real refugees and need international support and protection!

Financial support only please, Japan's safety is paramount.

This might, again, end up all words and no action. What ever help they can receive, they should get, of course.

However, I wonder why Japan is so quick to address this crisis while helping a pathetically low number of refugees from other places Does it have anything to do with skin tone? I wonder.

I get censured a lot on this board but what if the opinions in Ukraine that could have prevented this war were also censored by the Ukraine government and media?

Opinions are Information and to censure opinions is to say “i don’t need information”.

Which is a crazy thing to do in the age of information and where knowledge is power.

I have no doubt that big media in Ukraine censured opinions that were against that government and which could have prevented this war. And now the Russian bear is knocking at the door and once they come in they will never go out.

This war could have been prevented but the unpopular opinions that could have prevented it were probably banned in media.

What makes anyone thing Ukrainians are less likely to "fraudulently" apply for refugee status than people from Syria, Libya or Yemen? Is it because they're white?

If you ask me, everyone should get a visa and allowed to stay (as if living in Japan was some kind of privilege to begin with), but it's worrying that this kind of unfounded double-standard is going to be very prevalent among citizens and governments alike.

There’s a conspiracy theory that the dems like refugees because it increases their votes

Did the democrat US President and the Ukrainian President consider the possibility of millions of refugees when they poked the Russian bear? I think they knew what they were doing and didn’t care.

The thing is the whole world will be affected by these sanctions and not just Russia.

Just because of one senile cold-war-left-over dude.

When Japan accepts even a thousands refugees in a given year wake me up...

Why do you refuse to understand? There is no space FGS! Contrary to popular belief among JT users, Japan is not the size of Canada or Australia and yet every year, right here on JT, they make fun of Japanese people at Tokyo Summerland aquatic amusement park when it's summer and no one can see the water on the classic "Picture of the day".

Japanese doesn't need more people, it's overcrowded, people are living in cramped apartment/ tiny homes. Why? 126 millions people stuck on 3 shaky rocks.

The Ukrainian President Zelensky loved the idea of joining NATO more than he loved the Ukrainian people.

He could have negotiated harder with Putin and prevented war and millions of Ukrainian refugees and destruction of their cities and infrastructure.

Okay, I'm not sure overpopulation is the real issue here, but Japan literally needs more people. It's a country with a stagnating economy partly because of a shrinking workforce and a society in which, in the last few years, adult diapers have been outselling baby diapers. If there is a country in the world that should welcome as many people born abroad as possible, it's Japan.

Many of the refugees are women and children as the men return to fight. Unlike those fleeing from corrupt nations elsewhere these will return home to rebuild once the fighting has stopped and peace returns.

In the meantime giving them safety is not a bad thing. Many nations now prioritize Ukrainian refugees knowing full well what they are in for in doing so.

Kudos to anyone that does help them.

The writer is essentially talking of the Tokyo-Yokohama area. Much of Japan outside this area is under-populated. In Shikoku there is a village populated by dolls representing former residents. There are plenty spaces for Ukrainian refugees and others.

Do you know why young Japanese left those places? No jobs genius...! No jobs, nothing. OK, I see let them live on Japanese welfare....

You Johnny foreigner? No foreign community, no foreign food stores, no English language and totally closed minds, unwelcoming population. I lived for several months with in-laws in the middle of nowhere. I found people quite hostile and very wary.

Basically what's the plan? Repopulate such place by creating new colonies of foreigners and get rid of the natives?

A basic and for duration a more generous but time limited help for victims of war or natural catastrophes should be common sense. Accommodation, food, basic health care and basic education for the children and some pocket money or coupons for a basic daily life participation should be possible to provide in a big and leading economy. Everyone of us would also at least expect such a basic treatment if for whatever reason in a similar situation ourselves. Is there really need for discussion of such simple things?
