How low does it have to go before you just admit " Okay, we are an oligarchic kakistocracy and under any real democratic mechanisms we would not be in power. Just accept it. "
Reiwa Party and JCP would have to wrest bureaucratic support from the LDP before a sea change in Japanese politics could occur.
obladi
He's become a punching bag with "LDP" written on it. I guess the chickens are coming home to roost and it's time for real party reform.

Everyday in Japan JGovt at new low, debt and expenditure at new record high.
Mr Kipling
Don't worry, come election time the masses will all go out and vote LDP. As they always do, it's a default setting.
Capuchin
Am I missing my morning coffee or is that a typo?
Yubaru
The only "danger" until now, had been that the internal factions of the LDP would start rebelling and force the PM to call an election and at the same time step down from the position. The LDP had really no fear of loosing the PM position, so they didnt care much about how the people thought.
Still dont care about the people, and now the LDP internal factions are puling themselves apart due to all the scandals.
But there is still no real fear about loosing the PM position, just a problem of WHO actually wants it AND can do something to bring their proverbial guano together!
kurisupisu
Maybe it’s because the economy is tanking and the LDP politicos are still at the troth gobbling up what they can. Japanese people aren’t stupid and see what is happening.
Yubaru
No you aren't missing anything and no it isnt a typo either.
The problem is understanding the way politics work here. I actually participated in this poll this time, and they ask a number of questions, but most noticeably is that they as about the PM, simply put, support or dont support, and then the parties, including the LDP. But never ask about my local rep.
So they get a poll number for the PM and the individual parties, like the 24% here
Now the biggest problem is that the electorate sees the problems in the big picture, but they NEVER fail to vote THEIR LDP rep back into office, as "their" rep is not a problem, it's always the other reps that are bringing them down. So until the people start holding their local LDP rep responsible for the bigger picture, the LDP will continue to hold power.
The PM is no elected to the position by the people, but gets put into the office by being elected leader/president of the LDP. If he resigns as leader of the LDP, he would in effect also be resigning as PM, although, and while I am not 100% sure about this, doesnt mean that he cant stay as PM, but wouldnt have support of the party, so they all quit anyway. Like Abe 1.0, he resigned from both.

It doesn’t matter how low it goes the Japanese public is so apathetic to the plight of their country it go as low as 1% and the LDP would win the next election.
Lemmings springs to mind.

Families are feeling poor and the economy is vulnerable. Kishida is clueless and was chosen for his status quo stance so there is no surprise. Clinging to it's Showa mentality while the world passes by.
Mark
NOT SURPRISED AT ALL, in fact I am surprised that it's that HIGH.
GillislowTier
Abe was too big to criticize, Suga too temporary to bother with, Kishida unknown enough and lacking a web of connections beyond being in the party, to place all the blame on.
Hes sadly the face of all the LDP shenanigans that have been running for decades but that’s how it goes. People are still going to vote these guys in despite all the corruption for reasons that literally come down to thinking “well if we put in new people they don’t have experience… so things might change.”
Voters here sadly apply the logic of getting screwed over constantly by the people screwing you over for decades is better than a potential bump in the road or worse… actual change to improve lives and the country as a whole it seems.
indigo
Kishida manipulates clearly the justice. same comedy!!
William77
And yet the people of this country keep voting them.
indigo
vote is a delusion, a fake democracy with no choice.
US puppets since the WAR.

No. They don't. Look at the LDP's support rate. Hardly anyone actually votes for them but the electoral system is so skewed in their favour that it doesn't matter.
HopeSpringsEternal
People don't believe in the future, world in chaos, no peace and prosperity. Rather massive arms build-up and militarization, terrible Govt. deficits, weak yen and constantly falling inflation adjusted purchasing power.
Meanwhile NK doing better than ever, massive weapons proliferation and new dangerous military capabilities.
What's exactly to like?
HopeSpringsEternal
People don't like the denial. EVs exploding globally and Japan pretends it's all our imagination. BYD increases its EV sales in Australia 6x in 2023 vs. 2022, that's REAL.
Few believe Japan Inc. becoming more competitive globally, almost all believe opposite. Galapagos not working!

Kishi, please resign..
Samurais would roll in their graves by watching actual Japan condition..
Japan needs a strong man as prime minister, a man who really loves Japan and someone who never would be a puppet of western circUS...
Yubaru
Lol. Do you actually even know what you are talking about? In the 2021 Diet elects for the lower house, over 27,000,000 million people voted for the LDP as their constituency, over 10,000,000 more than the Social Democrats.
So by your logic 27,000,000 people's votes are "hardly anyone"?

According to the link below the Japanese are taking a record for in a long list of ‘no confidence’ in their economic situation.
https://www.visualcapitalist.com/confidence-in-the-global-economy-by-country/
HopeSpringsEternal
Makes sense such low economic confidence in Japan and other countries. Global chaos, conflict and this growing multi polar world led by BRICS = More Risk, Uncertainty and Competition, not to mention Japan well behind digitally with AI boom underway, no champions.
Any surprise Kishida's having a hard time? Almost all elected leaders in Democratic countries polling terribly.
Redemption
Not blaming Kishida san directly but in my area of Tokyo wages are flat, taxes are up, sales tax is a slap in the face every transaction, housing prices are way way up. My rent is stable but I considered buying and everything is 80 million yen or more as baseline. I may have to find one of those akiya in the mountains.

Everyone hates the LDP, and yet everyone votes for them. This paradox constantly baffles me.
ian
That indeed is baffling.
But is it true?
Kyo Hiromitsu
I think we need fresh politicians. Its incredible how these politicians have done nothing to help improve the economy.
They fail at everything.
chotto_2
He could have an approval rating of 0% and they'd still get voted in. The electorate here is frustratingtly stubborn.
opheliajadefeldt
If his ratings were 0% people would still vote for the corrupt LDP, so do not be surprised if he and the party win the next election, it is how these things work, if you have an apathetic population, they will not care about him or the party, as long as the LDP wins.
Jonathan Prin
If it is fresh, all is ok !
LDP is a dying dinosaur party, so static it can't change.

You call 27.79% of the popular vote on a turn-out of 59% a convincing mandate? By the way, take the attitude and shove it somewhere.

Not really. Only about a quarter of the electorate votes for the LDP but a lot of them are in rural areas that return double the number of Diet members as urban areas. Furthermore a lot of those areas really don't have candidates from any other major party that people want to vote for, because other parties can't afford the election campaigns.
Redemption
I would add to the above that judging by the most well known politicians, a political career seems hereditary in nature for a lot of them. The hard earned know-how and networks are handed off from father to son just like in feudal times.

They've decided that they're the replacements for the old daimyo class I think.
Sorry, what know-how?

Kishida facing backlash over Yen weakness, approx. 50% in last 3 years. Inflation biting hard, consumers paying more and getting less just like in US.
Thankfully, rates still low in Japan, unlike US consumers that face highest debt servicing costs as % of income since GFC some 16 years ago.
Defaults and delinquencies rapidly in US as well. That's in cards for Japanese consumers, the longer inflation pressure continues due to weak Yen, thus people not optimistic, Corp. $greedflation only makes things worse.
HopeSpringsEternal
US Govt. deficits now approx. same size as Japanese economy on annual basis, putting upward pressure on US rates, thus Yen weakness, continued inflation in Japan (and entire world). Why consumers so unhappy with Kishida, seems the economic problems worsening.
HopeSpringsEternal
There's also sense of failure, China taking over with EVs, Elon Musk's Starship success, while Japan's automative industry struggles to adapt and space rockets blow up.
