Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has failed to win public support for his government's plan to provide cash and vouchers to families with children to boost the economy, with nearly 80 percent of households preferring all-cash handouts, a Kyodo News poll suggested Sunday.

The simplicity of a UBI is preferable to unbalanced means testing and endless meetings about modalities of the stimulus. Who would have thought a majority would favor a UBI?

kyodo might have polled the wrong pool of people… as suggested by reading comments on this platform so far.

Every prime minister rating usually high in begining of their office.

At least PM Kishida seems to willing to listen to opinions and could reverse some decisions when things doesn't seem to work. Unlike most pm's who refuse to admit they are wrong and continue it anyway. Now if he only willing to listen to the Okinawa prefecture citizens concerning the US base, i think his poll with the people would skyrocket. He would definitely score points with the people, but at the same time make a lot of enemies in the political world.

Think the problem is people are numb and have gotten to such a base level of acceptance of nepotism, corruption, totally no future plan, just knee jerk reactions to today’s hot topic. A gift basket of fruit would probably get 60% voter satisfaction.

I have actually been called twice over the past five years for some surveys.

The last one about Suga politics. I could not listen well the question and I am not sure I pushed the right phone button. It was an automatic voice, not an in person call.

Even though no funds were offered to protect the people of Japan from the devastation caused by the pandemic, the poll numbers are that high?

Me thinks the numbers are manipulated much like the COVID numbers.

They must have polled people outside of Japan. No one I know supports Prime Minister Kishida.

Those of us without children at home get nothing, but have to keep paying for it. Why do some people think that those without children at home (I have one that I am still partially supporting away from home) haven't been economically hit by COVID?

Do they conduct these polls calling people's landlines? If so, that would explain a lot.

"Good afternoon Mrs Kishida, may I ask you what you think of Mr Kishida's cabinet?"

Great news for Kishida!

But still, this pool size is too small.

The economy is being hammered into the ground and the constant attack on wages via restrictions is causing hardship which those in government have little idea of.

The disconnect between the people and politicians is about as wide as it gets…

Why do people continue to expect anything from these successive LDP administrations?

3 ( +4 / -1 )

just fabricated numbers who really can believe in this?

1 ( +5 / -4 )

don't know what this means, not even 550 ppl responded. 60% would approve of a table lamp

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Kyodo News poll use landlines to survey. Who has landlines? Only old people so yeah.

“Kyodo News poll use landlines to survey. Who has landlines? Only old people so yeah.”

we still have landline and a fax machine so apparently I am old or your assumption is just off.

I wonder who the 60 percent are.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Kishidas idea of taking steps are not forward thinking or linear.

Morelike sidestepping and backflips of a moron.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

“I wonder who the 60 percent are.”

doesn’t matter. Polls are meant to be random. The sample size might be questionable but as long as it’s random… that’s fine whether you like the result or not.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

“"Good afternoon Mrs Kishida, may I ask you what you think of Mr Kishida's cabinet?"

Meaningless question. Pathetic for those voted for the above comment. You sample size is too small and question too personal and subjective. Do your homework first!

“Even though no funds were offered to protect the people of Japan from the devastationcaused by the pandemic, the poll numbers are that high?

Me thinks the numbers are manipulated much like the COVID numbers.”

Am not a fan of Kishida san or any political leader but what is your proof for some of the statements above? We, excluding anybody who doesn’t want to be included here, received 100000 yen last year. Not much but appreciated. Maybe other people might need that more than I did. And in terms of number manipulations, prove yourself! Don’t just sit there poring over the keyboard and spewing fake news or accusations

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

“just fabricated numbers who really can believe in this?”

eastman, as you think this was fabricated, why don’t you go run a poll yourself? Polls are imperfect but you shouldnt accuse others without any proof.

That says it all about the public here

failed to win public support for his government's plan to provide cash and vouchers to families with children to boost the economy

Yeah it’s ridiculous isn’t it. everyone knows that money doesn’t grow on trees.

with nearly 80 percent of households preferring all-cash handouts

….!!!!!!???

That’s not the point!!

But seriously, if an economic situation demands that needy be supported, doesn’t that mean that the existing social security net is utterly broken?

So what are our taxes paying for in the first place?

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Among the opposition, the Japan Innovation Party was supported by 12.5 percent, followed by the larger Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan at 11.6 percent.

Hope to see the Ishin party’s support reflected in their seat numbers in parliament soon.

The Japanese Communist Party was chosen by 4.3 percent.

It struck me when I saw a house yesterday with a JCP poster stuck on the outside, that the poster looked 100 years newer than the decrepit old stuck it was plastered on to. God forbid if people who don’t even look after their own abode ever get to govern the entire country.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

What are they exactly approving?

i don’t see any difference so far in my life....

Ah that only Japanese can enter Japan ?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

When the approval rating is high at the start, it makes the fall that much bigger.
