Well, IOC Chief Bach is contemplating the Tokyo Olympics cancellation.

The decision rests with the WHO, not IOC, says Bach.

IOC Will Follow WHO Advice on 2020 Tokyo Olympics Cancellation: Chief Thomas Bach

Berlin: The International Olympic Committee will follow the World Health Organisation's recommendation on whether to cancel or postpone this year's Tokyo Olympics over the coronavirus pandemic, IOC chief Thomas Bach said Thursday.

this tell me that this PM does not care for his people, like his father and other leaders before him, they really do not think of the common folks as human being, they see them as resource in time of peace and war.

people glorifies Samurai culture, if they really knew what Samurai did to the common people, they see them as resources also.

basically, he is playing God with people's lives here, to think about the Olympics before fighting this virus, it's a criminal

If Japan will be ready for the Olympics, then no need for all these travel bans and self-isolation and other steps now. It's basically saying everything will be fine no matter what's going on in the rest of the world.

Two idiots

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Increase coronavirus testing to general population and perform virus survey every two weeks from now on, and publish the survey result, to show the world that Japan has no impotent problem.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Not matter how much Japanese government shows its determination and promises to make an maximum effort on the pandemic, it is the IOC who will make a final call. Besides it depends on situations in other participant countries, beyond Japan's control.

Better prepare any plan B simultaneously alongside with the original timetable.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

. . . have all incoming athletes and visitors tested for Coronavirus to prevent spread within Japan.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Derp!!! Derp!! Of course the Olympics will be cancelled. America has cancelled all sports leagues indefinitely, thus America will cancel the Olympics. Cry me a river but the $$ America shells out for the Olympics is what counts. And when that disappears no IOC member will give a second thought to British cycling, Japanese Judo, Korean archery, French crossainting, or Australian rugby.

It is difficult to say whether the Olympic games will be successful or not. However, it is very likely that fewer people will be traveling and the expected number of visitors to Japan will be far less. Unless there is global progress towards fighting Corona Virus and a decrease in the rate of infection people are not going to travel.

1.) Most flights to Japan have a layover in China. I cant imagine everyone flying directly to Japan the logistics does not seem realistic.

2.) Japan alone cannot insure successful Olympic Games, it takes coordination with participating Countries there are 100's off variables at play. Unfortunately most governments can care less about Tokyo Olympics right now.

Who cares what Donnie thinks or says.

This is the same guy that enacts a travel ban on Europe, except for Scotland, Ireland, and the U.K., all countries where he has substantial business investments including golf courses.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Why doesn't Trump look after his own country and stop interfering with others?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

If Trump really pushes the postponement until next year then Abe and the Olympic Committee will have no choice but to comply. If the U.S. refuses to participate, you can bet that other important countries will follow and if major countries do not participate and their media outlets do not broadcast the games then the Olympics will be a disaster.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Trump isn't emotionally invested in the Tokyo Olympics at all because he has no hotels there. He was merely using the bully pulpit to shower us with his pearls of wisdom and grab some cheap media attention for a day, making headlines around the world with his mindless off-the-cuff remarks, one of the enjoyable perks of being Potus that he has become addicted to for feeding his incurable narcissism and providing his daily shots of dopamine. Trump always liked to preach that we would "get tired of winning". I suspect that after 3 years millions of us are throroughly exhausted and exasperated (including, no doubt, Abe along with many other heads of state).

It will be a disaster if the Olympics cancelled. However, it is really depends on what other nations will do against the virus, Japan has no control about it. The good news is that China has get it under control, and is starting to help other nations in knowledge sharing and material aids. China just did another delivery to Japan with 5000 protection suits and 100,000 masks. Chinese sister province also donated masks to Hokkaido, recently. Chinese MaYun also donated to US 1 million Made in China masks, and 500,000 Made in China test kits. Hopefully, both Japan and US will recover from the pandemics 3 months before the Olympics, because we all know without US team, the game will be light.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Makes sense.

Some people are sooo scared of this virus. It's not a monster. Take precautionary measures correctly, stay clean, wear your masks correctly and nothing's gonna kill you.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It makes sense.

The 1st ALL JAPAN OLYMPICS. (other nations welcome).

Or Postpone. (too many brown envelopes have changed hands for this to be comfortable).

F1 did the right thing. Confirmed case. Boom. It's all over.

Pure political stuff on both sides.

Abe built on the OG to be re-elected.

Trump cannot afford a disaster of low gold medals harvest in an election year.

None of them care about the people, political agenda conflict at its best.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

note scare quotes on "characterized"

"characterized as a "pandemic" by the World Health Organization, has put the games in jeopardy."

It's is and has been a pandemic for quite a while.

where is honesty and common sense?

*infections

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Did Shin-Chan tell Donny Japan’s secret for keeping infractions so low: not testing?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

There is no reason not to carry out though postponement was admitted.

abesan will postpone the Olympics right now

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Keep preparing, keep discussing with IOC and WHO, but be prepared to make a decision by mid May latest. Postponing a year or two is a viable option.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

That would be very strange to have another Olympics with no spectators, how they would make money is still the question, are they going to issue refunds or what are they going to do if many athletes decide not to come?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Shinzo-kun is going to do what his master tells him to do, and that's all there is to it. Trump is the only pretend friend he has with any real clout. And in any case, the talk about Olympics being cancelled is approaching a roar from a slight breeze sound a few days ago. Won't be long before Abe is having to repeat this 20 times a day, to saying they are looking into it, to admitting it might have to be delayed, to immediately saying he was misunderstood when his popularity drops, to admitting it will indeed have to be postponed, to shifting the focus on the US advertisers and preparing for his admitting it will have to be cancelled, to him stating it will be cancelled.

As you said, it was an obvious joke.

You reacted to it in earnest, though.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

It isn't and I never said it was?

Neither was mine.

But if you respond to someone else's obvious joke with an earnest desire for elected members of the Democratic party to become infected with coronavirus, you might want to rethink your priorities.

As you said, it was an obvious joke.

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

But wishing it on the US President is ok? How so?

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Abe's plan is to hold the Olympics and all other countries will boycott it out of safety concerns for their athlete representatives. That way, only Japanese will compete and will win every medal; thus establishing a total medal count that no other nation will ever be able to match.

A brilliant move by Japan.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I have to admit, this banter between Abe and Trump is entertaining.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Wishing that your political enemies had a deadly disease? Very cool. Extremely normal behaviour.

But wishing it on the US President is ok? How so?

-17 ( +4 / -21 )

Canceling the Olympics is not acceptable for both athletes and millions of people around the world looking forward to the Games. Postponing the whole event by a year sounds like a sensible solution. The only loser would be Abe, who won’t be prime minister by then.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

In all countries with cases of covid so far, it is clear that the infection at first spread undetected for days or weeks, and is unstoppable. Many African countries in particular have only just reported their first case, so will be at their peak infectivity just before the Olympics are due to start.

Postpone now.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

There is no question the disease will still be around in April, and I doubt if it will have disappeared by August, this beast will become endemic and possibly seasonal like the flu. Immunity and hopefully a vaccine will moderate its impact until it mutates, but that can make it more or less infectious so we will just have to wait and see.

Prepare for the Olympics, but also prepare to delay them is the only sensible option.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

No way Abe.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Abe must give Trump a free ticket to come to Tokyo to watch the Olympics, and get Corona virus as a bonus!

17 ( +18 / -1 )

Would be stupid to go ahead with almost zero spectators.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

The only advice that matters is what the WHO and IOC says.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Japan is preparing to hold the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics as planned despite Trump's one-year postponement suggestion, the top government spokesman said.

If this the case then number of infected people in Japan will be kept low no matter what.

The actual number?

13 ( +15 / -2 )

"Good things will happen for Japan and their great Prime Minister. Lots of options!"

Sure options! None of them bright for Abe!

5 ( +6 / -1 )

No test No virus mentality at its finest!

20 ( +23 / -3 )

Abe will be forced to postpone it at some point.

enuf said.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

If things get to the point of no return in early April I definitely think that the Olympics should be postponed. Not canceled, just postponed until possibly next summer 2021.

This will guarantee that not only the Tokyo Olympics go through, but most importantly the safety and well being of spectators is assured.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

No way

abesan don't mean it, do you?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Preparing for the Olympics to go ahead as planned is only as logical as preparing to delay or cancel if needed. Failing to do both at an uncertain time like this is just willfully ignorant or naive. In either case, it this is simply poor leadership (if we are to take their their words to be sincere).

8 ( +8 / -0 )

No need to rush the Olympics, haste makes waste!
