Not necessarily. The dam was already weakened by previous Ukrainian shelling, and it is not sure how well the turbines were maintained. Note that not the whole dam was destroyed (that would have had a massively bigger impact), but only the top part of one section. So for the moment, the nuclear plant downstream still gets some cooling water, and the Crimean still gets some water supply.

You mean the Azov regiment that is embedded in Zelenskis military? Yes, removing them will have to be a condition for a settlement.

*possibility

Offensive's not over yet. There is still the possible of removing terrorists from more of Ukraine.

Cogito Ergo Sum
Exactly. Without US funding, this war would stop tomorrow, and the issue could be resolved (fundamentally by implenting something similar to the Minsk accord again, but this time with guarantees). The US posturing about supporting the Zelenski government "as long as it takes" is completely irresponsible, and that the J government goes along with it is sad.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Well Russia has already lost big time in terms of reputation and weakness on the battlefield. You can hope for NATO to have someting similar but that hasn't happened in awhile.
Really, you fear Ukraine goes all the way to the Pacific?
TaiwanIsNotChina
Then you should consider Wagner a legitimate source of news. They've already confirmed Vietnam level casualties.
Yuuju
Where do you get your information then?
ClippetyClop
What about the poor Portuguese who are awaiting having a Russian invasion foisted upon them soon?
You are insanely thick.
Cogito Ergo Sum
@ Taiwan
I don't consider Western mainstream media as a legit source of news.
TaiwanIsNotChina
Even if your hero Putin makes off with the scraps he has right now, he still has to explain to his people why Russia needed to have Vietnam level casualties for it.
Clay
Believe President of Indonesia will end up leading peace negotiations and put an end to this Military DANGEROUS Escalation. All Parties will have to make concessions.
Timeline, Oct-'ish', put it on the calendar, negotiations to be held in Switzerland etc.
Clay
US Joints Chief General Miley & Most Citizens in Europe with Most Risk - Agree with You!
Cogito Ergo Sum
Again, this is NOT Ukraine's war...and NATO will lose, and I hope it loses big time. My heart bleeds for the Ukrainians who've had this war foisted upon them for a singular mission to destroy Russia and eventually China...as the geopolitical chessboard dictates. 8 million Ukrainians are exiled, weapons are pouring in and so is the money which is embezzled. The US and NATO are funding, equipping and manning this war, what does that make of Zelenski and Ukrainians ? You can read it from Zelenskis body language, sometimes effected to exude confidence but the diffidence is real. He knows He's not THE MAN.
. Japan and Co keep throwing fuel in there but not pursuing peace..
TaiwanIsNotChina
Your criminal hero Putin would never agree to UN peacekeepers because 1) it would expose Russia's wrongdoing in invading in the first place 2) it would expose Russia's warcrimes and 3) it would prevent further theft of property. Also third parties would have to supply the troops. Who is the third party? China? NATO member Turkey?
Still Putin's War
AMS
It's better to negotiate to end this war.
Clay
Ukraine continued destruction, like this dam, steadily increasing likelihood of both permanent failed state and Dangerous Non-Conventional Escalation.
Clay
Goes without saying that reconstruction of Ukraine, including this Dam, will need to carefully be done to avoid known corruption there - Per US Leaked CIA Intel.
Obviously, no rebuilding can occur until sustainable peace achieved, likely UN forces needed etc.
JJE
It will inevitably come in the form of misguided payments like this that will do more to line the pockets of ingrained, rampant corruption than any actual claimed altruistic motives or outcomes.
Yuuju
can you please elaborate what profit is there for people who lost their houses, possessions, pets, farms or even lives?
JJE
Is it just me or are these gifts getting incrementally smaller...
5 million - that's a mere fraction of the cost of G7 junket and their "working lunches".
wallace
It took a very large amount of explosives to blow the dam.
Bordeaux
That is embarrassing for Russia!
Just like......
Which still gives more credibility to Russia sabotaging the dam.
Bordeaux
Well, something was detected!
JJE
I was hoping for a battlefield update on the counter offensive.
In a nutshell the first images of destroyed Bradley IFVs..
Some background - the RAF commander of the Zaporizhzhia front is 3-star general Alexander Romanchuk. A Donbass native born 1959 Lugansk city - how ironic. He dislikes Bandera.

Common sense tells us that it would be a country with submarine capability. Does Ukraine have a submarine?
Russia had a several ships near the pipeline during the explosion. One of them is capable of carrying a mini submarine!
Does anyone have proof of the Ukrainians having submarine capability?
If Russia would sabotage its own pipeline for the sake of war and raped, tortured, and robbed Ukrainians while destroying their infrastructure during the initial invasion, then why would anyone believe that Russia would not blowup a dam to cause more suffering for Ukrainians who are embarrassing Russia in battle.
Only Russia is attacking civilians!

Occupiers admit hydroelectric power plant blown up by Russian sabotage group

For all the Russian sycophants! Problem solved!

The Dnieper reservoir cascade did consist of 6 dams of which Kakhovka Dam was the last.
Why are the 4 lock gates of the above dam open now and open for the last several months?
This is a legitimate question.

A missile attack would not have created seismic waves that were measured as far away as Norway.

Understand you're a heavy weight here, clean-up hitter right? Anyway, think the President of Indonesia was Spot on when to paraphrase he said....
BOTH sides (Ukraine & Russian) feel Righteous and Just in their Cause, their backstory etc. But rather than this zero-sum attribution game, let's get UN peacekeepers, including Indonesian Military Personal to establish conflict free border zone.
President of Indonesia, wise man indeed, as there is NO Innocence among Ukraine or Russian Leadership & this Proxy War Increasingly Gravely Risking all of Humanity.

Ukraine has gotten about 150 billion USD in aid (military, financial, humanitarian) from many countries. They went through all that money already?
EyesWideOpen
Almost an hour after my earlier post about "innocent until proven guilty" being purposely forgotten by the MSN and its eyes-wide-shut followers, still no downvotes.
That's a nice surprise!
@Downvoters - Cat got your tongues?

Excellent point and so true, bias and agenda so obvious, same people who love the term Democracy, so busy being with anti-free speech, suppression agenda, etc.
Fortunately, EU Democracy very robust, people very educated, so the Media much less impactful. EU citizens understand the terrible nature of war at their doorstep and the true complexity of Ukraine Russian tensions.
Most EU citizens want to rebuild Ukraine to become peaceful Democracy, not dangerous Proxy NATO Force

multi-millionaire Zelensky has many bank accounts in Europe. A financial transfer can be concluded in less than 24hrs if it is a weekday.

A simple question…where’s all the money Kishida has given Zelensky coming from? Higher taxes, cutbacks on social welfare, lowering wages. As long as Kishida follows the bidding of the G7 and Biden the future is dim!
ClippetyClop
So did Russia invade Ukraine because the 'western media' was 'promoting war'? Seems like Putin got played, and a result his apologists did too.
It's not a war against Russia. It's a Russian war against Ukraine.
If thise simple facts evade you then maybe you should pick up a newspaper now and again as you seem to have absolutely no idea what is going on.
Hercolobus
Thomas Jefferson used to say that a person who does not read newspapers is better informed than one who reads them all the time. In other words, he stated that they were full of lies.
The western media is owned by the same people who are promoting war against Russia, so obviously their news are used to fuel the agenda against Russia.
As an example, right after the Cuban Revolution got started, and Batista was deposed by Fidel Castro, Joint Chief of Staff Gen Lemnitzer proposed Operation Northwoods. It was a plan for the US government(CIA?), to conduct acts of terrorism and sabotage against the US civilian population and even military targets with the purpose of blaming it to Fidel Castro. Sounds familiar? 9/11 and Nordstream? Here is the declassified link to it:

5mil seems a bit too little? (Not that I am really complaining about Japan giving help to Ukraine.)
Anyway, just passing through the site and I still see some posters being so quick to blame Russia for all that has gone wrong in Ukraine and some that may not have happened yet. All this without any credible evidence other than Ukraine or the WH says so it'd seem.
Are we as a human species have *evolved" to the point where we have lost the ability to use evidence, facts and logic before coming to a conclusion? Or has the (Western) MSN been so successful at pushing the narratives that people have lost the ability for independent thoughts, as in why think for myself if all the thinking is already given to me by the MSN?
Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? How's blaming someone, or a whole country at that, without a shred of evidence any different from the authoritarian regimes that the western MSN (and its eyes-wide-shut followers) are so quick to remind us all of?

Paustovsky
Yes, you keep saying that but it's not true.
Clay
While Dam destruction terrible and easy to imagine, just cost of 'de-mining' Ukraine FAR higher in reality.
Human cost of this conflict FAR greater than Ukraine infrastructure damage e.g., dam; especially global food inflation leading to big increases in malnutrition, starvation, crime and economic damage etc.
EU citizen anti-war movement gaining big traction, per recent elections in Greece, Spain & Turkey. Proxy War risking global nuclear escalation & **massive collateral damage *(e.g., dam)* NOT Supported by Majority EU Voters.
oyattosa!!!
This money will dissapear , like most foreign aid shipped to kiev. People who really need it will never see the color of the money
Yrral
The US just spent 2.1 billions dollars on a war they has written off as a lost cause

Do you have proof that the entire check is going towards the dam?

Humanitarian aid is good but..
Kishi Kun, help your own people first !!..
Sven
So only CNN, BBC, Fox, NHK and etc? You are no doubt very well informed about the true state of affairs in Ukraine and the rest of the world (sarcasm).
PTownsend
According to your sources, who did in fact destroy Nord Stream? I have not yet read anything definite about which groups might have been proved to be responsible. But for reliable information, I try to ignore social media accounts and avoid Kremlin-based media.
Sven
Missile on the already weakened dam from previous attacks Ukraine / NATO had openly boasted about. You really don't know that? I have my doubts. You are programmed to say exactly what the government and media want you to say even though you know it isn't true.
Agent_Neo
Kishida-san, one digit is missing.
We should accept more refugees from Ukraine.
There is no Japanese person who feels the danger of life due to war now.
Active support for Ukraine is the will of the people who oppose the war, and Kishida's job is to help people who have lost their families, lost their homes, and lost their homes.
Jorge
Get Ukraine into NATO. Get Ukraine into EU.
Fighto!
Good on Japan - as well as the democratic world - for helping Ukraine at their time of need.
The Japan-bashers will continue to bash - that is a given.
Peter14
He is. But he is also able and inclined to help others in dire need to save lives.
Mark
Thank you, a drop in the ocean but better than Zero.
Meiyouwenti
Helping others in need is fine, but please help your own people first, Mr Kishida.
tora
Except we still don't know who destroyed it.
Remember who actually destroyed Nord Stream?
Kishida should hold his horses for a bit.

Unless you have proof this a loan instead of a gift, this is a ridiculous statement.
Michael Machida
Where there is destruction, there is profit.

Putin, his gangster armies and the Kremlin are gtting what they wanted, they have wanted to destroy Ukraine, and figured the 'west' would pay to cleanup the disasters Russia has created, it's worrying to me that even worse disasters (possible nuke plants blown up?) might be ahead, which should please the anti-west supporters, especially the muh Russia social media warriors favoring authoritarianism, and pushing for an acceleration of the destruction of western democracies.
JeffLee
Send the bill to Russia after a probe proves Russia was responsible. Plus interest.
