Japan to host G7 summit in Hiroshima on May 19-21 next year

Agree that Hiroshima is a good place for the summit.

It will add a sense of clarity to the fuzziness & mystique surrounding the city and it's current status decades after the devastating bombing.

But if politicians - esp Japanese leaders - use the site and occasion to back up their populist agenda, then it stinks.

To have any credibility in holding the event (way past it's use by date anyway) in Hiroshima, the govt of Japan must sign the ban on nuclear weapons treaty.

To not do so is surely an insult to the sufferings of the 100,000s of nuclear victims.

Hiroshima is sacred land to many - not a political parade ground.

Hiroshima is a nice place, both seaside and landside as well.

I'm willing to bet there'll be a photo op right outside the dome or that museum. This is getting so predictable.

Miyajima Island is another photogenic place for the group photo of G7 leaders. They will probably visit there by boat directly from the meeting place on the Ujina shore.

Probably, but when a major world leader and his staff claim the use of nuclear weapons is still a possibility that they might use while they expand their nation's territory.

Hiroshima a good location, to re-remind those that are not supporting Russia, of the possible consequences of nuclear warfare. The Peace Museum is a sobering place, another reminder that nations should not invade and start wars with other nations. And it should be a reminder that nations should develop their own energy sources, instead of relying on other nations, or invading other nations to get their resource, which is . something Japan should have learned, but still has not. Recall what happened to the Dutch East Indies and why they were brutally attacked.Add in Iraq and Libya.

Maybe if Russia, China, North Korea, Israel, India, Pakistan the UK and France did, the US might. But still highly unlikely. It's a trillion dollar industry in the US, so expect the US still still possess them, and hope they're never used again like they were. Ans hope he US does not elect for president another hugely egotistical, highly insecure megalomaniac, someone who has the suitcase with him at all times, and has shown he can easily go off the rails, e.g. "take me back to the capitol", and if they do go wack, there will be secret service men to rein them in.

I see no reason to not stop trying to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free world, for as long as we live in a world that has nuclear weapons. Why would we ever stop trying to achieve a world without that?
