Like I have said before, if Japan wants those islands back, it's going to have to tell the US goodbye.

Something Abe doesnt want to do, so, the status-quo goes on, along with all the rhetoric.

Putin needn't worry. Any agreement with the current US administration isn't worth the paper it's written on. The US will walk away when it suits.

They're not going to risk losing the chance of getting even more millions to defend Japan. Russia's got as many or more nukes than the US. Expect Japan to become part of Russia's Eurasian Economic Union. Along with China's Belt and Road?

Russia still can't over the fact they couldn't get into Japan fast enough at the end of WWII to turn it into a Soviet Satellite state.

Nothing new here, USSR Russia will 'try' to destabilize the free world wherever and whenever they have the opportunity. But, Mr Putin, you're so predictable, and is exactly why your country will never progress beyond autocratic despot status (despite possessing lots of commercially lucrative technologies).

IMHO, China is a much bigger threat, because they have the means to wreak havoc due to our trade dependencies.

The other threat (for me, I don't expect Trump supporters to agree with me) is Trump, IMHO, he has consistently made decisions that favours Russia, as though as is on a leash with Putin holding the reins.

Two major neighbors sharing a border with Japan, armed with Nuclear Weapons, acting hostile by constant patrols and incursions in Japanese territory, did I mention North Korea? Also a danger to Japan, a country which you are close too and support.

This is more Russian propaganda for misleading Japan by the nose with promises of giving back what they took illegally.

The claims have been substantial since after the war, but yet Russia then Soviet Union doesn't argue that it was theirs to begin and with and still firm and has never said that Japan had occupied them prior to the war either. hmmm. So it means the Soviet Union's legit reason was just take it end of story in other words plunders or spoils of war. To the winner go the spoils...The US has no plans to place any land based nukes anywhere on Japan land/territories of Japan. By the Russian complain it means the alliance is working and is a deterrent on them gaining more control of this region.

All Japan has to do is change the constitution with new fancy rewording and they can take them back legally without a single shot, the alliance can remain and need go nowhere. However for those who don't like the alliance, one does have the choice to leave the country or accept it. The rhetoric has always been there and that too will not go anywhere except the tune will change. The US is not going anywhere anytime soon nor plans to exit either.

With all these “prima donna” at the helm of some of the most powerful countries in the world we certainly live in uncertain and unstable times.

It’s a paradox but back in the 80es the world was a safest place due to more responsible and capable world leaders.

Let’s hope that common sense will prevail.

Since the end of the WWII USA has been aggressor number one and Russia has a good reason to resent it and defend its security. Just the size and richness of the country is enough to make it a target for American and the axes of evil empires hungry for easy gold rush type bonancas. Japan has nothing to fear from Russia and while Russia does not really need the four disputed islands they would be absolutely stupid to give it to japanese territorial control, it would be like giving them to the USA military for the nuclear WMD's at the Russia's doorstep. The right way to do is use the islands for the good of both countries, build the trust and friendship and keep the Americans out of the area since it is far from American land and they should go home.

Anyway, Russia has been a stabilizing force throughout the world. Japan should finally put an end to the US occupation and get rid of all US military presence, and then further strengthen its relationship with Russia. The sooner the better.

Sure and Japan wants to be part of the newly reformed soon to be Soviet Union, with long lines for a piece of bread. There is no US occupation, the war and agreements were signed many many year ago. Now I'm not saying Japan should not strengthen a relationship with Russia but only when it benefits both equally, but later than sooner.

So Japan is supposed to scrap a decades old security alliance that is the cornerstone of it's national security apparatus and in return they get some of the islands they are asking for back? I trust there will be some binding treaty. Just ask India how good Russia's word is.

Japan needs to look at what is happening in Europe.

Putin is breaking up the EU, starting with Brexit.

Scotland which is Part of Great Britain and favors the EU is threatening Independence from Great Britain now.

Putin has Trump attacking NATO in efforts to break NATO up. Putin is also an evil dictator that is anti-environment, racist, a murderer from the KGB and a pure racist right winger.

Japan must be firmest in the negotiations and not bow down. Abe must beware of Putin and not become a puppet like Trump.

Japan should throw some economic sanctions to Russia, like how it did to Korea. That way, the world will know Japan is a nation that respects international law and peace. Doing anything less would give the world a false impression that Japan barks only at those that are deemed doable.

Putin uses scare tactics to try to bolster support for his rule. Everyone not allied to Russia is a threat and must be watched or dominated. To be fair he is not the only one that uses scare tactics for his own benefit. He just does it better than most.

Japan is no threat to anyone. America is a threat to everyone thanks to Trump.

Because of Putin's incompetence as a leader, Russia is now a third rate military power, with a GDP less than that of South Korea's. Listening to what Putin does or does not want is a waste of time.

No, Japan doesn't have to tell the U.S. goodbye. Rather, it's the U.S. side that will tell Japan goodbye should there be any possibility of an agreement with Russia on the return of the islands in question.. Thus, sad though it is to say,  it is the U.S., as always, that hampers Japan's negotiations with Russia on the islands' return.
