Like I have said before, if Japan wants those islands back, it's going to have to tell the US goodbye.

Something Abe doesnt want to do, so, the status-quo goes on, along with all the rhetoric.

Putin needn't worry. Any agreement with the current US administration isn't worth the paper it's written on. The US will walk away when it suits.

-8 ( +7 / -15 )

God Bless the U.S. and Japan alliance!

15 ( +22 / -7 )

Yes I agree Mr Putin. Its meant to be a direct deterrent to nations such as Russia, China, and NK.

13 ( +17 / -4 )

At some point before next year's election, Pres. Trump will make a public statement agreeing with Putin. Then he will will make a joke about Russia helping his election again. (Wink-wink)

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Just remember, Vladimir. Japan has a security treaty with the US because Russia remains a major threat.

12 ( +21 / -9 )

Putin responses have changed since the first impeachment trial didn't go Trump's way.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

No articles on Trump this morning. Russia keeps things in balance with US and China.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday Japan's security alliance with the United States continues to pose a threat...

So it is working!

Follow the oil money.

Japan's ruling class have kept their economy dependent on burning hydrocarbons for decades. Russia's got the hydrocarbons to sell. Trump and GOP leaders like McConnell, Graham, Rubio, Cruz and others are financially supported by Russian oligarchs. They're not going to risk losing the chance of getting even more millions to defend Japan. Russia's got as many or more nukes than the US. Expect Japan to become part of Russia's Eurasian Economic Union. Along with China's Belt and Road?

But Putin is clearly unhappy with this Japan-U.S. security alliance under Trump, so I guess he's gonna help the Democrat candidate win in 2020, right?

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

Russia still can't over the fact they couldn't get into Japan fast enough at the end of WWII to turn it into a Soviet Satellite state.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Nothing new here, USSR Russia will 'try' to destabilize the free world wherever and whenever they have the opportunity. But, Mr Putin, you're so predictable, and is exactly why your country will never progress beyond autocratic despot status (despite possessing lots of commercially lucrative technologies).

IMHO, China is a much bigger threat, because they have the means to wreak havoc due to our trade dependencies.

The other threat (for me, I don't expect Trump supporters to agree with me) is Trump, IMHO, he has consistently made decisions that favours Russia, as though as is on a leash with Putin holding the reins.

Did anyone hear about this,

https://www.npr.org/2019/12/19/789718925/vladimir-putin-backs-trump-calling-impeachment-charges-completely-made-up

No wonder why Japan is having difficult negotiations with Russia and US.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Anyone who allies that dictator (fat rocket-man) is a threat.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Where was Putin after the war? What did they do to help Japan recover and move on?

4 ( +8 / -4 )

https://www.npr.org/2019/12/19/789718925/vladimir-putin-backs-trump-calling-impeachment-charges-completely-made-up

gotta protect his asset.

Listen to Putin,

What about the alliance between China and Russia? Does that count mr. Putin?

Two major neighbors sharing a border with Japan, armed with Nuclear Weapons, acting hostile by constant patrols and incursions in Japanese territory, did I mention North Korea? Also a danger to Japan, a country which you are close too and support.

This is more Russian propaganda for misleading Japan by the nose with promises of giving back what they took illegally.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

re article: Tokyo claims the Soviet Union seized the islands illegally soon after its surrender, while Moscow argues it did so legitimately.

The claims have been substantial since after the war, but yet Russia then Soviet Union doesn't argue that it was theirs to begin and with and still firm and has never said that Japan had occupied them prior to the war either. hmmm. So it means the Soviet Union's legit reason was just take it end of story in other words plunders or spoils of war. To the winner go the spoils...The US has no plans to place any land based nukes anywhere on Japan land/territories of Japan. By the Russian complain it means the alliance is working and is a deterrent on them gaining more control of this region.

In response to post: Like I have said before, if Japan wants those islands back, it's going to have to tell the US goodbye. Something Abe doesnt want to do, so, the status-quo goes on, along with all the rhetoric.

All Japan has to do is change the constitution with new fancy rewording and they can take them back legally without a single shot, the alliance can remain and need go nowhere. However for those who don't like the alliance, one does have the choice to leave the country or accept it. The rhetoric has always been there and that too will not go anywhere except the tune will change. The US is not going anywhere anytime soon nor plans to exit either.

Putin calls Japan-U.S. security alliance a threat

Translates to "divide and conquer"

9 ( +12 / -3 )

With all these “prima donna” at the helm of some of the most powerful countries in the world we certainly live in uncertain and unstable times.

It’s a paradox but back in the 80es the world was a safest place due to more responsible and capable world leaders.

Let’s hope that common sense will prevail.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Japan will never get those islands back. Russia does not cede it's territory to others as long as Putin is in charge.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Japan will never allow the USA to base nuclear armed missiles in Japan. NEVER!!

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Since the end of the WWII USA has been aggressor number one and Russia has a good reason to resent it and defend its security. Just the size and richness of the country is enough to make it a target for American and the axes of evil empires hungry for easy gold rush type bonancas. Japan has nothing to fear from Russia and while Russia does not really need the four disputed islands they would be absolutely stupid to give it to japanese territorial control, it would be like giving them to the USA military for the nuclear WMD's at the Russia's doorstep. The right way to do is use the islands for the good of both countries, build the trust and friendship and keep the Americans out of the area since it is far from American land and they should go home.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Where was Putin after the war? What did they do to help Japan recover and move on?

It was the US that caused all the damage that needed to be recovered from.

Japan will never allow the USA to base nuclear armed missiles in Japan. NEVER!!

The will never "knowingly" allow it...

Anyway, Russia has been a stabilizing force throughout the world. Japan should finally put an end to the US occupation and get rid of all US military presence, and then further strengthen its relationship with Russia. The sooner the better.

re post: Anyway, Russia has been a stabilizing force throughout the world. Japan should finally put an end to the US occupation and get rid of all US military presence, and then further strengthen its relationship with Russia. The sooner the better.

Sure and Japan wants to be part of the newly reformed soon to be Soviet Union, with long lines for a piece of bread. There is no US occupation, the war and agreements were signed many many year ago. Now I'm not saying Japan should not strengthen a relationship with Russia but only when it benefits both equally, but later than sooner.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Don’t tell trump. He just might panic and abandon japan to the wolves.

he’s done it before he’ll do it again.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

So Japan is supposed to scrap a decades old security alliance that is the cornerstone of it's national security apparatus and in return they get some of the islands they are asking for back? I trust there will be some binding treaty. Just ask India how good Russia's word is.

@Serrano

Yeah, sure.

Russian Media Cheers Trump’s Moves: ‘Putin Won the Lottery!’

https://www.thedailybeast.com/russian-media-cheers-trump-moves-in-syria-putin-won-the-lottery

Maksim Yusin, the editor of international politics at the leading Russian business daily Kommersant, was amazed by the ongoing stream of inexplicable actions by the American president that benefit the Kremlin. “All of this benefits the Russian Federation,” Yusin marveled. “You know, I’ve been watching Trump’s behavior lately and get seditious thoughts: maybe he really is a Russian agent? He is laboring so hard to strengthen the international image of Russia in general—and Putin in particular...In this situation, Americans—to their chagrin and our enjoyment—are the only losers in this situation.”

Oh, my........................

Japan needs to look at what is happening in Europe.

Putin is breaking up the EU, starting with Brexit.

Scotland which is Part of Great Britain and favors the EU is threatening Independence from Great Britain now.

Putin has Trump attacking NATO in efforts to break NATO up. Putin is also an evil dictator that is anti-environment, racist, a murderer from the KGB and a pure racist right winger.

Japan must be firmest in the negotiations and not bow down. Abe must beware of Putin and not become a puppet like Trump.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Actually, this is the best time to resolve this issue. Trump is Putin's pet. I'm sure an agreement can be reached. For those who think Trump is America's problem, watch what happens when Trump is pressed with this issue. You might even see Trump remove bases. Starting with Misawa.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Yes ? And so?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For all of Richard Sorge's hard work they only got the four islands when they wanted Hokkaido as well at least.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Russia has been a stabilizing force throughout the world.

LOL! That's rich! Please ask the people of Chechnya, East Ukraine and South Ossetia what they think of that comment.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Japan should throw some economic sanctions to Russia, like how it did to Korea. That way, the world will know Japan is a nation that respects international law and peace. Doing anything less would give the world a false impression that Japan barks only at those that are deemed doable.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Putin being irrational yet again. I think last week he stated that the continued alliance between kermit the frog and miss Piggy was a threat to Russian security.

Putin uses scare tactics to try to bolster support for his rule. Everyone not allied to Russia is a threat and must be watched or dominated. To be fair he is not the only one that uses scare tactics for his own benefit. He just does it better than most.

Japan is no threat to anyone. America is a threat to everyone thanks to Trump.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Because of Putin's incompetence as a leader, Russia is now a third rate military power, with a GDP less than that of South Korea's. Listening to what Putin does or does not want is a waste of time.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

"Japan-U.S. security alliance a threat"

If North Korea, China, and of course Russia weren't such a threat to begin with, then an alliance would not have been necessary. But they are.

"Japan will never allow the USA to base nuclear armed missiles in Japan. NEVER!!"

Incorrect. Those missiles are located in Okinawa. Unless you do not consider Okinawa territory of Japan.

"It’s a paradox but back in the 80es the world was a safest place due to more responsible and capable world leaders. Let’s hope that common sense will prevail."

Last time so-called 'common sense' prevailed, it ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Keep in mind, Putin is a student of history.

There is no simple solution to this entanglement. In fact, I do not believe there will ever be a solution.

if Japan wants those islands back, it's going to have to tell the US goodbye.

No, Japan doesn't have to tell the U.S. goodbye. Rather, it's the U.S. side that will tell Japan goodbye should there be any possibility of an agreement with Russia on the return of the islands in question.. Thus, sad though it is to say,  it is the U.S., as always, that hampers Japan's negotiations with Russia on the islands' return.

Suppose Abe told Putin that the Japan-U.S. alliance wasn't being strengthened because, for example, the ongoing construction of a new U.S. base in Henoko would be disscontinued, how would Washington react?

Suppose that Abe decided to donate 10 billion to North Korea's nuclear project to get the abductees back?

How would Washington react?
