Kishida will appoint Aso as the LDP's vice president, according to the sources.

There is a good horror movie to be made about how Taro Aso keeps returning to haunt the Japanese public. Is there anyone there who has a proven, inspiring track record as a leader or a history of accomplishments in bringing benefits to the public? But that is not how they are chosen is it?

22 ( +23 / -1 )

The icing has changed but the cake is still the same ol' LDP c..p. This move was always just a stop-gap measure anyways so that the LDP would not go into the general election with Suga as the PM. Now the LDP will hope that the poles will be favorable for them going into the election.

Kishida fills ruling party key posts with Abe allies

Well DUH! Of course he will. Ganbare Nippon Kaigi!

7 ( +13 / -6 )

""filling many key posts with close allies of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe""

We are in good hands I say.

-12 ( +2 / -14 )

Did we expect any different from these self serving cronies ?

14 ( +18 / -4 )

Nothing ever changes in Japanese politics. The stench of corruption and incompetence just lingers and the same old faces just continue playing their game of musical chairs.

18 ( +22 / -4 )

Ah, there we go again. Some things just never change, the old boys club have come to play again.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

This is good news, with strong conservative leadership this country is in safe hands.

-24 ( +2 / -26 )

Let the circlejerk continue.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

The largest opposition party, the CDPJ, has a single-digit approval rating.

People who do not support the LDP also do not support the CDPJ.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Will politics ever change for the good ?

Time to vote them out next election.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Japan is not a true democracy as we interpret it.

Ancient democracy was born in Greece and carried for a certain time in Rome.

Then the two greatest modern democracy,America and then France shaped the actual one.

Japan was forced to digest democracy but it didn’t go so well.

So here you have a one state party ruled by far right wingers.

Yes there is a democratic opposition in Japan but the apathetic media just ignores them.

So again, nothing will change here,on the contrary many things will revert to the past, nationalism and militarism.

7 ( +14 / -7 )

The LDP, a Western slave party, would be an easy party for the US to handle.

Some members of the CDPJ claim that 9/11 was an American lie.

-13 ( +0 / -13 )

When DPJ was in power, the US media criticized the Japanese government for being too anti-American.

The Obama administration was also dismayed that "Hatoyama is loopy.

Tatsuo Fukuda, a relative greenhorn serving only his third term in the House of Representatives, is set to become chairman of the decision-making General Council, the sources said.

A breath of fresh air! Reading further...

Both Fukuda's father and grandfather are former prime ministers, Yasuo Fukuda and the late Takeo Fukuda.

At this stage, I think a sizeable portion of the public would support a full return to autocracy by the Emperor. One despot or a bunch of little nepotistic despots?

4 ( +6 / -2 )

This article is absolutely depressing.

17 ( +18 / -1 )

Kishida fills ruling party key posts with Abe allies

Good grief, who on earth could possibly have foreseen this turn of events?

The Japanese government's new policy chief is a Nazi admirer and Amari is so bent he needs a corkscrew to put on his trousers in the morning.

Aso's still there and this Fukuda is yet another silver spoon-fed dynastic politician, whose grandfather was a protégé of the Class A war criminal Nobusuke Kishi, Shinzo's grandfather. Fukuda's father was one of the many revolving-door Prime Ministers some 20 years ago, and a particularly faceless one at that.

Kono Taro/Taro Kono is now in charge of the stationery cupboard at LDP headquarters. The fate of Nepotism Junior is unknown, but nobody cares anymore.

The charade of democracy in Japan is there for all to see. As per Johnny Rotten's famous last words, "Ah ha ha, ever get the feeling you've been cheated?"

23 ( +27 / -4 )

Amari, Takaichi, AND Aso? What did the Japanese do to deserve this lineup of "all-stars"? So far Kono would have been a better choice...maybe.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

Anyone who considers the USA, a functioning democracy, especially as a model for Japan, is delusional. As for Greek or Athenian democracy, its foundation (similar to the early USA, in its first 100 years) was slavery and the exclusion of women and only freeholders exercised power. Indeed, there are those in the LDP who dream of such.

The very peculiar parliamentary system imposed by that shining light, a beacon on a hill, the USA, upon Japan was flawed from the onset and intended to prevent any democratic flare ups.

As the elderly die-off and demographics shift, there is a slight chance the hereditary legislature and governing factions will disappear. Otherwise, Japan is doomed and eventually disaster will render the state completely dysfunctional. The current concentration of power has adversely impacted economics, finance and the culture at large. That a disgraced and inept Abe still wields power through his factotums via contrivance and enshrining his failed policies by emplacing his cronies, once again in charge, is simply corruption of the highest order.

As for women in politics, only the likes of Takaichi, the good German, who represents everything heinous about Abe and the most reactionary, right-wing, conservative, gains any prominence. Dark times ahead.

This is good news, with strong conservative leadership this country is in safe hands.

You don't know much about the LDP, do you.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

Meet the new boss...same as the old boss.

10 ( +13 / -3 )

Oh look, reruns that no one asked for.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Back to the future? The “Abe” returns?, from his political Sarcophagi.

Akira Amari is a skilled economic playmaker. No doubt but not a well man.

However former internal affairs minister Sanae Takaichi is a toxic right wing harpy.

Taro Kono, if he values his political future would be wise to run for cover and close the hatch.

This whole presidential election is a charade, an illusion, a pretense that the factions, wouldn't organize a whispering Campaign to maintain and secure there power base.

Taro Aso, is still politically lurking like a blocked drain.

A Japanese right wing coup d'etat, in all but name

14 ( +16 / -2 )

Meet the new boss same as the old boss. Maybe worse.

J Electorate has been fooled again,

Well maybe, until November?

3 ( +6 / -3 )

This is the same group of people that botched the coronavirus response (especially vaccinations) and went through with the Olympics when cases were peaking. By the same token, they made Japan's press freedom plummet from world's 9th to 67th, so it's not surprising the media unquestioningly consider their next "leader" also the next prime minister.

9 ( +12 / -3 )

It's not what they say it's what they do.

Kishida's appointments have shown that everything he said in the campaign was total BS. I supported him until the moment he told his entire faction they had to vote for him. The writing on the wall.

Let's see what he does with Abe's brother Kishi.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Please.....

Kishida, the country's presumptive next prime minister, is also considering ministerial posts for when he launches his government next week, and according to the sources, has decided to name former education minister Hirokazu Matsuno, who belongs to the largest intraparty faction Abe used to be part of, as chief Cabinet secretary.

The appointments appeared to be aimed at rewarding factions that backed Kishida in the LDP's leadership vote on Wednesday while preparing for a general election in November, his first major test in office.

The factionist agenda will always be pulling the strings.

Change will not come until the nation reaches the bottom.

Hopefully that will not be, economically, the point of no return

3 ( +6 / -3 )

slow clap. Welcome to the new boss, same as the old boss...

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Politics as usual!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

And I bet the Japanese voters will still vote for the LDP in the upcoming elections.

You get what you deserve.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

KISHIDA will vacuum all your wallet with its money printing. expect 500yen the tomato soon.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Kono got shifted big time ..Party Public Relations head?..riiiight.

Almost twisting the knife. Kon was the clear preference of the public, but the party takes priority over the public. And imagine the snarkiness when they said, "Kono-chan, since the public likes you, we'll make sure you have no influence, but instead make you the PR face of the party. How about that?"

The arrogance is breathtaking.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The selection of Kishida came as no surprise to the people of Japan who often describe unsavory cookie-cutter politicians as "同じ穴の狢" - onaji ana no mujina (raccoon dogs from the same hole). The LDP's rightwing anointment of Kishida as Abe' s 影武者 (kagemusha) might be facetiously summed up as "onaji Abe no mujina".

6 ( +9 / -3 )

Kono as the PR of the party for policies he doesn't like, talk about a bitter backroom

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Glad to see Abe wore a proper mask in that photo, and not one of his useless Abenomasks, which is still sitting in my cupboard, unopened.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

What else should they do? Filling the posts out of a de facto non-existing opposition? lol

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Best choices ever. Look up each of their names. Why I don’t pay ax.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

As long as Abe is out, it would be okay.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

These PM losers all smell the same. Like dead stinking fish! Next!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

But its not really democracy in Japan is it !

surprised abe is still involved?

Abe was never out of the picture lol ,

Iam not surprised .

Lets see what happens during the next 6 weeks.

Don't let the anticipation excite too much.

Its all already decided regardless of the votes in November.

Better get some more vaccine while you can.

Iam being sarcastic !

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Sickening reading ! Feel sorry for the Japanese public.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

In September, a CDPJ official was arrested for bothering a woman on a train, although the foreign media did not report it.

Kono was also revealed by a weekly magazine as the audio of him threatening a bureaucrat in September.

There is a lot of news that you can't get to know just by watching English news.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

A sad reflection on a failed democracy. The underlying problem is the Japanese people do not have a history or culture of thinking for them selves, their culture and thought is corporate by nature and instinctively deferential. The very antithesis of the ancient Greeks who invented democracy and every successful democracy since.

Unless and until that changes true democracy is not a natural fit for Japan, but I do hope in time it does change for the sake of the Japanese people.

"We have to go forward with economic measures to protect people's livelihoods, jobs, society and the economy," Kishida said

Same old claptrap as always.

Let me opt out, please. I prefer to protect my own livelihood by myself rather than pay lots of tax to you clowns who will spend it all and more to get yourselves re-elected.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Don't hope.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Kishida fills ruling party key posts with Abe allies

That means the new government will be no different from a shadow Abe government and nothing will change from the incumbent Suga government -- no re-investigation of the suspicious Moritomo/Kake Gakuen scandals and no reconsideration of the Henoko new base issue in Okinawa.

Abnormality is the norm of Japanese politics.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Geez.... and here everyone was saying what a fantastic leader and difference Kishida would make! I'm sure everyone is utterly stunned and equally heartbroken.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Kishida was already forced to put all of Abe's cronies in top positions, so their will be no criminal investigations unless they want to publicly exonerate them, so Abe can run for office again!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Mr. Abe should step down from the power of the goverment. I guess that one of the strong reasons why he stick to the controling the next goverment is his threat that the next govermnet may start a reinvestigation into his MORIKAKE scandal. Its issue is a big and imortant agenda for the next national election.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Kishida and his cabinet of cronies are just there to add a final layer of "TruCoat" teflon to protect and shield their "oyabun" from criminal investigation.

The LDP was founded by the same people that took Japan into and through WWII. Now, the grandchildren of war criminals are running the LDP.

Totally false statement.

The LDP was effectively created by the United States.

"From the 1950s through the 1970s, the United States Central Intelligence Agency spent millions of dollars attempting to influence elections in Japan to favor the LDP"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberal_DemocraticParty(Japan)

There are no grandchildren of war criminals running the LDP. Abe and Kishi's grandfather Nobusuke Kishi was detained by GHS on suspicion of being a War Criminal. However, he was never charged, tried or convicted and released. Therefore he never became a "War Criminal".

0 ( +1 / -1 )

"...he was never charged, tried or convicted and released."

Just like OBL, then, 'cept he was "released" at sea.

"Therefore he never became a "War Criminal".

But surely, Kishi, could be "seen" as an "unindicted" war criminal, like numerous high-ranking fascists in Germany and Italy who escaped justice, in many cases because they were treated as valuable "assets" in America' Cold War against the "Worldwide Commonist Conspiracy", as J. Edgar used to call it. The CIA slush fund was also instrumental on reviving rightwing political parties in France and Italy run by "rehabilitated" fascists who fit the US government's profile of "political correctness" (the "unwoke" variety).

And so Japan continues to be ruled by dinosaurs and fossils.

it sucks that Takaichi san didn’t win this time. That’s a big loss for us, Japanese.

But besides that Kishida san is okay decent choice. Definitely million times better than Kono san or Noda.

I really don’t understand what’s the problem Abe san still has some power over the Japanese government.

He was the best and longest prime minister of all the time, is a proof of Japanese citizens’ agreement. can’t deny the fact.

We don’t want Noda who’s a wife of Yakuza family and married to Korean to take power. or Kono, who is actually one of the best about defense and military issues, but he’s got a big issue dealing with China .

We juuuust don’t wanna let China or Korea to bother us no more.

Plus, the other party such as Rikken they are simply unbelievably dumb and absolutely no way to vote or support. whatever coming out from their mouth is total BS and nonsense. If you are a Japanese, you would know in less than a second. Edano gave me the shivers when I saw him talking. I so hopefully Koshidasan does something new and better for 日本国及び日本国民.
