A sign of another election ?

Give it up, you won, no need to rub it in.

Abe vows to maximize pressure on N Korea

How? You are partially responsible for creating the hysteria with your fear-mongering rhetoric. You know too that you can't do a damn thing without Trump backing you up as well. China and SK don't particularly like you, and you have to keep acting tough in front of the cameras for the people of Japan.

So just WHAT are you going to do, besides talk that is?

Like clueless lemmings to slaughter

Abe needs to maximize Japan's potential to be a part of North East Asian family. Japan has a good location and a good opportunity. But Japan has to use it. Abe has to maximize his energy to build the golden triangle: Japan-South Korea-China. The golden triangle has all money, people and technology to make huge difference. The time is now.

"Dialogue for dialogue is meaningless. We have to maximize pressure to create a situation in which North Korea calls for dialogue," Abe told a press conference

The North Koreans have called for dialogue several times but have been rebuffed by the Americans each time. Why is the corporate media ignoring this?

Alfie is that a trick question? There's no opposition to the status quo don't you know? Case in point, Abe's scandals that almost dislodged him magically disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

So what do YOU want him to do? Change the first paragraph of Article 9 and carry out a preemptive attack?

No they haven't. They even ignored South Korea's offer for discussions. North Korea has stated that their Nuclear and Missile development program is NOT NEGOTIABLE. They have not changed this position. So what is the point of any "dialogue"? Why do you keep repeating this false information?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Shiny happy people having fun......

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Alfie is that a trick question?

Yes, of course. Japan's corporate media (or most of it at least) features what the LDP and its supporters want and ignores the difficult stuff.

Not the biggest fan of Abe (nor am I a fan of most politicians) however something must be done to contain North Korea. The collapse of the tunnel where testing of nuclear weapons was performed is a potential environmental disaster.

On the other hand, there is an alternative view floating around. The view is that this is a distraction to allow China to silently continue to build up their military while we are distracted by North Korea and looking the other way. This theory was put forth in a NBC news article making references to military sources.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/can-china-beat-u-s-without-fight-n816146

It is an interesting viewpoint. Although I am not sure I fully agree with this point of view, it would not surprise me. While Americans tend to have a very short term world view, which can change on a whim (think 4 year election cycles and business plans developed to ensure quarter by quarter rather than long term results) China has always thought very long term; something Americans do not seem to do well. This is something China knows and has exploited in trade and business and perhaps now militarily.

Anyway it is an interesting theory and my fear is that Mr. Trump falls into the very short term thinking category.

Mr. Trump falls into the very short term thinking category.

I'd say that was a very generous assessment. I haven't seen a lot of evidence of his being capable of any kind of thought beyond "I can grab women by the ..."

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Look at this picture... So much for empowering women !

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I thought only 30% population of Japan is above 65. Now I know 100% of it is above 80. Also now I know that only 8% of the population in Japan is female.

Abe seems a long time prime minister but only 5 years. Former other prime ministers probably had too short administration.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I agree with Abe, dialogue is no longer feasible with NK and is in fact worse as it just plainly wastes time which allows NK to finetune their thermo nuke program to allow them to hit NY, Tokyo or London. Only then will they start talking and the discussions won’t be friendly.

Unfortunately there is only military action remaining and it’s for the best. Trump should be coalition building right now instead of trying to blame everything on the Dems.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

The only hope is that North Korean regime will collapse from inside.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Bunch of crooks and cronies, Japan needs to wake up and smell the cheese, these guys are making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

NK regime is not suicidal , its aim is its survival and it sees nuclear deterence as the only way to ensure it. According to such reasoning should the US attack say Pakistan or China , Russia ... because they have nukes that "allow " them to hit us too then?

Pakistan, China, Russia, no country is openly stating that they intend to carry out a nuclear attack on the United States......except for North Korea. I trust you see the huge distinction.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Stop and think about the enormous cost in terms of tens / hundreds of thousands of casualties that attacking NK and its retaliation would bring before so easily declaring there is "only" military action left.

How many casualties do you think there will be if NK thermo nukes the main cities in SK and Japan, and eliminates NY, Chicago, Washington, LA, Houston, Atlanta, etc.? A few hundred million? Which is better?

No nation on Earth that is aiming for deterrence threatens other nations with extinction like NK and Un do. Their intentions are clear and they must be stopped by force as 30 years of diplomacy has failed. In just 3 more years, NK will not only have the capacity to hit any major city on Earth, but will also likely have about 300 thermo nukes capable of wiping out the entirety of America. How good do you think dialogue will be at that point?

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Parade of the clowns.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Abe must make a public statement that there is only one solution in North East Asia, peaceful solution. Japan must be against any war on Korea peninsula. This the best interest to Japanese people. If Abe can not do that, then please let other capable people be PM of Japan.

Golden triangle must be strong and firm. NKorea will be shown an example of prosperity. Eventually, NKorea will be a part of the golden triangle, no other alternative.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Diet members are so far removed from the ordinary Japanese person as to be unrepresentative. It is obvious that the Japanese system of government (control )needs a thorough reform!

Also, the press (no matter what is said) fails to take into account that a nuclear war is unwinnable and will likely lead to millions of deaths, far and wide!

There are no steps, coalition partnerships, pleas, entreaties,

embargoes etc that will alter that fact.

Nuclear war is not an option.....and neither is any provocative action!

I thought he was going to solve the abduction problem! And in any case, he prmosises this while hiding behind Trump’s bone-spurred legs.

@Alfie Noakes

Not sure about the meaningof this post. American coporate media? Not sure what corporate media even means.

Not sure about Americans rebuffing any attempt at dialogue either. In fact the U.S. Secretary of State Tillerson has said they have direct back channels with the North Koreans. This is an improvemnet. Prior policy and prior administrations had to communicate through Swiss diplomats to N.K.

A pledge or an arrow? An arrow pledge? Pledge arrows? What?

the government will draw up a policy package totaling 2 trillion yen ($17.5 billion) by early next month to address Japan's low birthrate and aging population.

That won’t address those issues, but will further exacerbate Japan’s terrible debt problems.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

At this stage there is only two options. Heart attack/stroke, or create the golden triangle joined to China's Silk Road. But America wouldn't allow that.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

NK we do what NK wants to do, and thats build a ICBM, dialogue is good, but with KJU in his mind set, and he's going to build a missile weather you like it or not, its a waste of time tying to talk to someone who is so focused as he is,

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Lol, abe will only take actions when it's already too late. how can he protect the nation from possible nuke attack when he can't even do something as basic as building free nurseries for all single mothers and poor families to avail? The price of being a US lapdog is greater felt by the powerless poor.
