The top leader of LDP and the prime minister should be chosen by LDP diet members only. It is strange the race is affected by non diet members. Diet members were chosen by the national elections. It becomes a double election.

Effectively denying the outer circle of more ‘normal’ politicians the chance to represent the average Japanese instead of vested interests...

now there's a surprise....

Crank up the cement trucks, it's business as usual.

It’s an election to decide who is the least of three evils.
Ichiro_WeatherForecaster
I want to expect Suga’s leadership.
But election again is likely to be held that a will of people won’t be affected.

Guys, maybe I'm being too cynical, but I still believe that Nippon Kaigi has already chosen Abe's successor and probably did before he got the green light to resign. Now its just about political gymnastics to get their man in power. I don't believe there is anything democratic with regards to NK. They are the movers and shakers of Japan
moonbloom
The legacy of 'real democracy' exhibited by the LDP party which was covertly established by the US in Japan in the post-war era
Fiddlers
Nothing will change here as Suga has already be chosen as the next prime minister and he will be thrown under the bus just before the next election. He will then retire quietly with some nice benefits. Nothing ever changes in Japanese politics as the same people always pull the strings from behind.

But it IS the ruled procedure, and things go normal in case a LDP president quits short of fulfilling the tenure. In referring to the past similar cases, the new leaders were selected by "in-house" Diet members only. Otherwise, should the selection include rank-and-file members from local chapters this time, it could be an extra consideration or favoritism for Ishiba, no?
I'm not a LDP member, and what I now call for is snap general elections.
rgcivilian1
My vote and pressing Suga. Get the name plates changed now.
u_s__reamer
The election result is now set in concrete.
Yubaru
Ishiba would probably take the first round hands down, against any other the others, as he has strong support with the rank and file members, but has little support from within the elected Diet members.
The "election" is now a forgone conclusion if it stays this way!
Suga is going to have to lean heavily on Abe and Aso for support, which means a continuation of Abe's policies.
Yubaru
It is not a "ruled" procedure, the top members of the LDP who decide how the election will be run, have the choice to include all members as well.
They are "voting" against Ishiba by not doing so, and giving the election to Suga. Kishida is just window dressing now!

Why go through the election process at all?
Just appoint Suga Yoshihide, and be done with it.
The definition of Shamocracy…..
YeahRight
There is nothing "liberal" or "democratic" about the LDP. They should just change their name to "We the Elites Party."
Pukey2
Searching for Suga's charisma is like looking for that needle in the haystack.
quercetum
Japan is tatemae Democratic and honne authoritarian.
Ken Wyatt
LDP, CCP. They all the same...
Hope they pay the price come next general elections.
talaraedokko
There goes democracy. Nothing like the elite to keep things on even keel.

Or Luling Dotards' Party?

The fakary of the entire process is the factionalised block voting. The political backroom horse trading. It a could be open to accusations of bribery, corruption, and the influence from any form of outside vested interests.
The disproportionate weight attached LDP MP’s and delegates from the party's local chapters, rank whilst the file membership is shut out, thus ensuring the status quo with little or no prospect of much needed change, economic reform.
Suga, 71, who has been Abe's right-hand man for nearly eight years and is seen as a continuity candidate, has garnered wide support from factions within the party despite not belonging to one himself.
The continuity candidate.
Frankly, the situation so commonly found/experienced in large J Corps up and down the country. In which mangers/employees cannot make progress in their careers until the person superior to them retires. And then to add insult to injury there is no recourse to challenge.
Ascissor
Now it's up to the aggrieved rank-and-file members to boycott their LDP candidate come the next election (doubt they will, though).
Stev
Not Suga!!
CaptDingleheimer
Sounds shady, but he's my horse in the race knowing only that he's a self-made man who grew up on a farm in southern Akita (a place dear to me heart). His family isn't part of any political dynasty like many of the others.
Luddite
Not democratic. All party members should get a vote.
wraither
Hilarious how they can Calvinball their way in an election. Sasuga, Japan.
GW
Japan thwarting actual democracy who would have thought!!! Sadly not surprising at all, same ole, same ole!
mikeylikesit
In other words, they know they have a weak bunch of insiders vying for the top job, and they have moved to eliminate the risk of another upstart Koizumi appearing out of nowhere after the rank-and-file vote. If the rank-and-file were smart, they’d form a new party that guaranteed them the vote, leaving behind a few hundred lawmakers as a comically pathetic vestige is the LDP.
Goodlucktoyou
When I came to japan, it was #2 economy. Then China #3 economy. Now India #4 economy. Next Russia #5 economy.
thank you LDP.
Sana Hamaya
Self-styled "Liberal Democratic Party" chosen undemocratic way to avoid 'prime minister Ishiba'.
because Ishiba government may uncover political scandal of Abe government.
sf2k
not much of a "Parliament" if they can't follow the most basic of tenets. LDP huh
Ascissor
To be fair, the Tories' current "leader" was elected by party members.
drlucifer
Dango . Cartel lives forever.

Great leaders. Not something unfortunately Japan is particularly good at creating and once the infighting starts, that BECOMES the job. If there ever were a time for a competent PM to appear though, now would be it. Suga kaaaaa? He looks like a bridge choice. Charisma not exactly his thing, so I guess inspiring the nation in these difficult times not really an LDP mission nor goal. Let’s hope we don’t see the ridiculous revolving door period of the pre Abe era. Would like to see Kono have a run eventually, anyone really with some decent grit and mettle! Always hoping!
englisc aspyrgend
And Japan purports to be a democracy? Very disappointing.
Desert Tortoise
Doing so immediately discredits whomever "wins" the election. The party elders have made their choice already and are ensuring their anointed is selected. Not that much different than how the CCP Central Committee operates. A black mark on the next Japanese, cough, cough, "leader".
