Biden is vaccinated so should be fine for him to come.

Regarding the rest of the americans - athletes, media etc... wouldn’t recommend if not vaccinated.

High risk of getting infected due to no measures at all, no testing, no tracing, no vaccination distributed, and finally not having hospitals to take care of you due to lack of beds and language barrier.

You come, your (high) risk.

Think twice before flying over.

Biden will politely say ‘thanks but no thanks’

nobody wants to be associated with this festering quagmire of corruption buffoonery.

26 ( +30 / -4 )

What for? Biden got much more important things to do than waste his time on FAKE OLYMPICS!!

20 ( +22 / -2 )

Wait.. Didn't we say no foreign spectators? Didn't it matter if vaccinated or not?

30 ( +33 / -3 )

Yeah, where's the no foreign policy ?

That's a good illustration Mr Suga !

16 ( +17 / -1 )

If tourists can't come, even vaccinated ones, why should a politician be given special treatment? One rule for them...

27 ( +30 / -3 )

The cabinet minister that came up with that head sparkler?

Which discipline/sporting event?

Hop, skip, and Jump for seniors?

Septuagenarian cycling, swimming?

1500 meter walking the dog, slowly.

It will be great if Biden will reply using the meme of old Captain America from "Avengers: Endgame": No, I don't think I will.

I really hope Biden says, "Thanks, but maybe another time," meaning the priorities of the US people come first. I also hope he sees through the self-centered politics going on at the expense of its citizens. Didn't Suga say no foreign visitors to Japan? That's being hypocritical, right?

21 ( +22 / -1 )

I’m sure his I hope he has a schedule clash, there is no point appearing in a half empty stadium.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

So, he gets to come, but my fully vaccinated, healthcare worker sister, who painstakingly chose events and spent 2000 of her own bucks on Olympic tickets doesn't? I don't get it.

So will Biden be the only non-Japanese spectator?

No, there'll be some from the sponsors, or "partners" as they are laughably called now, and also non-Japanese residents of Japan because excluding them would just be too blatant.

Joe, being the master is not obliged to accept the invitation from the slave gassu

So what happened to no foreign spectators? Different rules for politicians? And will Suga have to download Cocoa and Skype too on arrival and self isolate for 2 weeks? I remember they said no exception, even for Japanese.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

Foreign fans are banned.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

He’ll say no. It’s just a formality.

Ahh...well...he...erm....Obviously Suga wasn't talking about 'himself'. He's the head of the Ruling Class, such petty restrictions and apps are certainly not aimed at people of his rank and privilege.

Besides, who else will prop up the Hostess and Steak industries?

Suga san government, cabinet, has creating a political diplomatic conundrum.

A potential political diplomatic mine field.

I was not being sarcastic, not having a laugh and a giggle.

Unless Joe Biden is competing, what is Joe Biden presence going to achieve?

Nothing other than, the hundred or so world leaders that have to settle to cheer their athletes/competitors from their wide screens.

Cannot invite one without inviting them all !!!!

Then another logistical nightmare, with all the support protection staff.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

What about Xi Jinping. He might not appreciate the snub if he is not invited. China may retaliate, Suga will miss the reciprocal invite to China next year, but then again he might not be PM by then, so it will only be his successor who misses out,

How is "Suga to invite Biden to Tokyo Olympics" a news item?

If Biden accepted, I could understand it, but what does it matter what Suga is going to do?

1 ( +5 / -4 )

I thought all foreign spectators were banned. Would not Joe Biden be a foreign spectator? Weren't they being banned for health reasons?

5 ( +9 / -4 )

@AG I get the impression that you don’t understand what the vaccine does. It does NOT prevent you from getting infected. It enables your body to fight it right away if you do, so you’re 85~95% likely to not get sick from it (depending on which vaccine you had.

But you can still contract it. And you can still spread it (before your body has killed all of it).

Suga is no doubt desperate to try and draw as much attention away from all his problems (this festering quagmire of corruption buffoonery - perfectly put stickman1760) in any way he can. Of course Biden will decline. No chance of him coming. He should focus more on leaders who aren't concerned about minor things like corruption. Perhaps he could get his son to invite Xi and Putin by promising lots of lavish dinners at steakhouses, visits to Ginza hostess bars, functions hosted by NTT and lucrative contracts from Dentsu to name a few (the rest we may or may not hear about).

This is how a Government can sleep walk, unwittingly, unnecessarily into combining foreign policy with a global quadrennial sporting event in the middle of a pandemic without a clear vaccination program.

Whether Joe Biden accepts or not is now secondary.

The damage has been done.

The list of Country Leaders that were deemed politically minor and peripheral won’t be lost on their peoples.

Really puts a bad taste in my mouth that no foreigners allowed but if you are a sponsor with money or a VIP then no problems...

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Suga or whoever else happens to be the face of the LDP is obligated to make such invitations to the POTUS as a matter of foreign policy, which really means, "You are welcome to attend this event Master, for making all of this possible. And we will continue to order weapons from you, and always support your policies in this part of the world, with our military, our media, TOEIC, and our tax money. Your adopted sons, LDP."

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I am maximum prepped, so that I can stand both events without psychological damage.

Note on shopping list... batteries

Note on To-Do list.... check that the remote controller’s off-switch is working

lol

The simple solution is to welcome VIP guests, however insist all adhere to measures that every competitor has to abide by.

Everyone, irrespective of status, joins in.

Might actually give an insight into this pandemic these so called, elite VIPs have been shielded from.

lol, USA is the country with over half a million covid deaths, still more than 1000 per day, and you are warning Americans not to come to Japan. This pretty much sums up the mindset of a lot of posters here.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

I hope he has to rent a Japanese mobile phone and download the required apps like all other inbound travellers,

7 ( +7 / -0 )

@therougou

My thoughts exactly.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Please Biden, don’t come to Japan fit the olympics. Save the embarrassment your presence would bring.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

Of course Suga wants Biden in.

In order to make this magnified Japan sports day to be legit.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

No more superstate leaders in Japan, please.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Biden visit is a non-starter due to the restriction Japan imposed on the number of accompanying officials and security details, fewer than 20.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I am sure Mr Biden will have to quarantine for two weeks before hes allowed into Japan, or may be not.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Isn’t it a good chance to go out again and eat steak?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Will be a great view on TV , Biden and Suga alone in the Presidential suite of the 68000 capacity olympic stadium
