Why is the world so greedy and still doing business with China? They should cripple their economy as they are doing to Iran. The ONLY thing Trump did somewhat right was his stance on China. Nobody's perfect and in a perfect world everybody would respect one another's human rights & borders by not crossing over them. That's just what China has been doing on different levels. Human rights abuses regarding the Uighur people and the people of Hong Kong, its threats and use of intimidation toward Taiwan and the same in regard to the Senkaku Islands and Japan, its invasion of Tibet, its Covid-19 cover-up, etc. China's a bully. I'm sure the Chinese people are wonderful, but they have no say in how their dictators should govern their country. If China is like this now, what is it going to be like, or, how much worse is it going to be when it has unquestionable power? Now is the time to lay a balanced foundation before it's too late.

Well, we've seen what China is like with some power over the past few decades, and it's quite frightening if what we're seeing now is any indication of what the future holds with a much more powerful China.

The risks China poses to Taiwan are not overlooked by the U.S. Expect support for Taiwan to increase from the more subtle support in the past.

As it stands, Taiwan attended Biden's inauguration, and the U.S. military knows that the timetable for China to invade Taiwan has shortened substantially. All it would take is Taiwan to declare independence or some perceived slight on the Chinese government.

Frankly, Taiwan is likely one of the biggest reason for these talks.

Now when US and Japan can realize the double face and tactics of China. Here is the problem with your statement. Taiwan has not declared itself to be an independent nation. The leadership of Taiwan has always made the claim to be the legitimate government of all of China exiled to Taiwan by the CCP conquest of the Chinese mainland. For them the Chinese Civil War is still going on. They have never recognized the CCP as the legitimate rulers of mainland China and still consider the ROC government to be that legitimate government. The US used to agree and only recognized ROC as the government of all of China. That position ignored reality. However, since Taiwan itself does not claim to be an independent nation, at least not yet, there is no independent nation of Taiwan to establish diplomatic relations with. The US has the equivalent of an embassy in Taiwan, calling it the "American Institute in Taiwan" and if you look at their web page it is https://usembassy.gov/Taiwan-2/ , "usembassy.gov" says it all if you ask me. It's an embassy in all but name. The real problem for Taiwan is that they know the very instant they declare themselves to be an independent nation mainland China will go to war. Such a war will inevitably draw the US in to what would likely become a nuclear confrontation. Japan, Australia, Canada could also be sucked into this. Nobody really wants to go there. The west was originally of the opinion that given time mainland China would democratize and the conflict would solve itself. That plan looked good through the administration of Hu Jintao, an administration that was even experimenting with holding democratic elections on a small scale in some mainland municipalities. Since Xi Jinping came to power all of that has changed and we are back to the 1960s when Mao was in power. The only way I see Taiwan achieving independence would be for the three NATO nuclear powers, US, UK and France, along with Australia, Canada and any other western ally willing to do so to place their troops in Taiwan and their naval forces close by and do this immediately before Taiwan declared its independence, followed minutes later by the nations vouchsafing Taiwan's security declaring their diplomatic recognition of Taiwan and then signing of a mutual defense pact between Taiwan and the powers aiding her. China might still go to war but I think with enough nations behind her she could prevail against China and China's loss would probably be the end of the CCP.

That is not entirely true. I remember the era well, have books from that period predicting Japan eclipsing the US economically, some even predicting the US and Japan would go to war. There were indeed trade disputes. Every time the delegation of rice growers from California would show up at a Japanese trade show they would be deported. Japan would never grant Qualcomm the RF bands they needed for their cell phone technology to operate in Japan. Etc, etc.. Non-tariff barriers to trade was the term used for these. Japan ran a big trade surplus with the US, but instead of allowing the value of the US Dollar to fall in value as it should have to correct the trade imbalance, Japan used its abundant supply of US Dollars to buy up US Treasury notes. In the process, as businesses exchanged their Dollars for Yen, they inflated the Japanese economy greatly. All that cash led to a real estate and stock buying spree that ran up the prices of both in Japan. It was not a sustainable situation. It was the eventual bursting of the "twin bubbles" in real estate and the stock market, which happened simultaneously, as investors realized both markets were grossly over priced that led to the crash and subsequent decades of economic stagnation. You do have one thing right. China has indeed studied this period of Japanese history and tries to limit its exposure to US debt as well as trying to limit inflation in China. They are only partially successful as there are something like 50 million homes sitting empty in China, big high rises built with speculative loans that threaten to bring major banks down.

Their record in the Middle East, Latin America, and South East Asia is horrific. Millions of deaths can be laid at the door of the US State Department, intelligence agencies and military. Lets compare the coercion by the Chinese government with that of say.. The US....

China's foreign policy is for the benefit of China not the US... Hence all the endless, BS anti China propaganda so many on here take hook line and sinker.

It seems the possibility is looming large that China will take over the U.S. in terms of GDP and military force in the near future. So this 2 + 2 meeting can be said to be a way of impatience on the part of the U.S. and Japan.

Why China takes this? Biggest and richest most successful country in the world with a 5000 yr history. The saying “bull in the china shop” is really, “the bully in the China shop”.
