China has already backed off on its threats to add additional tariffs to American soy beans and pork. China's domestic producers are facing a severe threat from swine flu. China will need American pork and beans for the foreseeable future.

Japanese has a strong market in all of Asia. Since when does china have the ONLY market? There's a very Big world out there the last time I looked. Minnesota Gov. As the top poster CORRECTLY pointed out, Japans population is well into DECLINE, so there is now way(except for the occasional small spike) that Japan will be importing more corn or soy from the US, it will & likely is already in decline like so many other major commodities like oil & gas etc

Both Japan and South Korea have aging declining populations, not to mention that even together they do not match the import volume of China. So the Governor of Minnestota is an idiot if he actually thinks these two countries can "make up the losses" from exports to China. On the other hand neither South Korea nor Japan are strategic adversaries of the United States, nor are they seeking to replace the United States economically amd militarily.

They don’t buy them essentially because the markets here are effectively quarantined from having to go head to head with superior foreign imports. A compliant populace has internalised a false consciousness view that Japanese products are superior. It thrives despite people having zero actual contact with the foreign products they won’t hesitate to bad mouth.

America is quite capable of manufacturing many "superior" goods. But Automobiles is not one of them. Just ask any American. And just like Americans. the Japanese buy German cars. I see Fiats, Volvos and even Alfas. I've owned enough American made cars to know they are garbage. They start falling apart at 5 years.

Unfortunately, we here in Japan are too often denied those superior American (and other countries) goods. Our recompense for being compelled to accept inferior domestic products, the dubious satisfaction of knowing that taking one for the team is its own reward.
