Before Trump embarks on his trip East to make friends and influence people, here is a Confucius quote for him: "To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must cultivate our personal life; and to cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts right." Trump sure has a long way to go before he can have any meaningful and effective dialogues with our friends and foes in the Orient.

I can only hope that he doesn't do or say something stupid and mess things up any further.

Trump is a lot better than Obama. I expect Trump's practicality. Obama was a man of words. Trump is a man of actions.

Trump readies for high-stakes Asia trip
Should read:
Asia readies itself for man-child Trump trip

This is a very bad idea
Alfie Noakes
Yes, extra-judicial mass murder by death squads, allegedly staffed by police officers. Trump thinks that's good.

Does 'high stakes' refer to Trump pushing for US built casinos and golf courses in Asia?
He's using the presidency to ensure his (and his family's) properties and businesses worldwide are kept safe while at the same time trying to expand their global operations.
Why won't he release his full tax info to show which international 'financiers' he's doing business with and where all in the world he's doing business?

I am nervous.
Trump is a clown. And could do some real damage. There is a significant non-zero chance that he will seriously piss off some of our allies. Because he stupid, ignorant, and temperamental. Peace in East Asia depends on US power, and right now a good chunk of that power is in the hands of a stupid, venal clown.
So, I wrote a poem:
Trumpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Trumpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the kings horses and all the kings men
Couldn't put back what THAT F$&*$&$ IDIOT Trumpty broke!

crazy joe, totally agreed. what a wonderful mind.
bass4funk
Probably not. He's the president, not a private citizen anymore.
Do you have proof of that?
Hey, the left are already attacking him on any and everything and what would that serve? Would that stop his haters from furthering bashing him? No, it wouldn't, so why should he stick his arm further into the flames, at this point, it doesn't matter.

This is a bit like hoping your dog won't lick it's own butt before trying to lick your face. It's going to happen. Trump's consistent MO for his entire presidency is every time he's in trouble, say something outrageous to distract people from whatever idiotic thing he did the day before. A constant rolling wave of idiocy keeps people off-guard unless they have Mueller-like levels of patience.
Recently people close to him have been indicted by the FBI. He's going to do something bigly idiotic now.
Do you have proof of that?

While Obama was the president, he did not anything to help Japan when we had hard time about Senkaku. During that time, America appeared to many Japanese, they are more friendly to China than to Japan.
OssanAmerica
During Obama's presidency, 2 Secretaries of State, 2 Secretaries of Defense and Pres Obama himself officially stated that the Senkakus were covered under Article5 of the US-Japan mutual defense treaty, thereby ensuring that China understood that they could not take the Senkakus by military force without entering a conflict with the United States.

Remember how often China harassed us at Senkaku at that time. Our efforts to keep U.S. Forces on Okinawa even appeared a vain effort. If at that time Trump were the president of our "allied country" America, he would have taken quicker and efficient counter measures to China.
Ray Payne
Donald Trump, elected by the American people as our president- is not a career politician, he is a successful businessman. He is an American patriot that supports our country, our people and our military.
America has protected Japan and South Korea since the end of world war II.
Trump truly wants, one on one, free trade with our so called trading partners. He wants a fair playing field to off-set America's huge trade deficit with other countries. Trump, for many years, has recognized the trade barriers in place to drive up the cost of American products. Trump will make America great again.
God Bless America!

If Abe wants to play games between US and China, then he will lose big. US-China-Japan is no longer a triangle relationship. It is bilateral relationship between US and China. Abe surrendered long ago.
Schopenhauer
Anyway, Trump is a more reliable big brother to Japan. Obama was a cold fish.
Akie
Only stupid heads will fight for Senkaku. It is not worthy it. If US and Japan combined today can't afford a war to occupy the disputed Islands, how could it be possible to fight a war when China is bigger then US and Japan combined tomorrow ? Abe made a huge mistake, unforgivable mistake, to ask US to be involved.
LandofExcuses
Correct. While Japan is an important ally of the U.S., the relationship between China and the U.S. is ultimately far more important in the socio-economic-political spectrum - both now and in the future. The ramifications of that relationship are much greater for both nations domestically and for the rest of us, globally.
Akie
LandofExcuses, US and China are far away, can easily get along. China can offer everything US needs in Asia. I don't see anything Abe can offer to US, besides military bases.

Trump on foreign trips is like watching a tightrope walk. There is some hope that he'll be blown away again by the knowledge of people like Xi, he can enjoy golf with Abe and talk vulgar trash with Duterte. South Korea might be the difficult one.
OssanAmerica
Don't count on it. We have a $347 Billion trade deficit with China, and Trump was talking about slapping a 45% tariff on Chinese Imports. But now we "need" China according to Trump to solve the North Korean issue. Plus Chinese factories are still pumping out Trump neckties. The Trump administration spends more time pounding Japan over trade with which we have a$69 Billion deficit.
Jimizo
Good post. Trump's talk about getting tough with China on the campaign trail was characteristically belligerent, empty trash designed to get the whoopers excited. While people have focused on his affection for types like Putin and Duterte, he also speaks in very positive terms about Xi.
I suppose Trump supporters can argue that he's learning on the job and his promise to get tough on China came from a position of ignorance.
He's now playing 3D chess again.

More like a GOLF TRIP!
Goodlucktoyou
How much does each country have to pay to host him in return for a a few "America First" bumper stickers.
bluesky.greentrees
Trump wrong focus of golf over Dollar/Yen & BOJ monetary policy with Abe; the big trade deficit with Japan is growing again.
Trump wrong focus of NK over Dollar/Yuan with Xi; Xi can take care of Boy Kim, watch & narrow the huge trade deficit.
bass4funk
I think you're wrong, Trump has had years and years of business experience with the Chinese, he does know them inside and out how the Chinese think and do business, politically that may be a different story, but like with every other president before him, he too, has to learn about the Chinese political structure and the advantage and leverage that Trump has is his knowledge about trade and business which can be extremely essential in dealing with the Chinese, so Trump getting tough on China in a lot of ways can put pressure on Xi to do more when it comes to NK and overall trade in the long run.
Is that a bad thing? The other guy was focused on Castro, Abbas, so what gives?
More like a position of strength with a touch of attitude and fortitude.
mukashiyokatta
World leaders know Trump is on the way out, so they will not engage with him in any meaningful way. Just wait for him to make his exit.
toshiko
I don't think there's enough time for him to say anything serious but N. Korea announced it will test hydrogen equipped ICBM.

Trump does not own casino in USA. He has teal states business but he is not a business man. He never owned casinos in any country in the world.
