Women's wages 70-80% of men's in Japan as gender gap remains

And what about the work hours gap?

How often has this been debunked in every other developed country?

On average men work 4 to 5 hours per week more than their female counterparts, but somehow this is always left out.

Sorry to say guys but most women do not put in the hours men often do. Do not fill jobs they require more physical demands and frankly don’t often earn back to company profits that men do. The wage gap is befsuse of so many issues that often are not honestly talked about. Like with sports and the advertising revenues Mens vs women’s bring in. Wages should looked at on an individual level with the same criteria and work load and hours put in etc. The women who do the exact same as men I would expect to be the same and have been even in Japan for a long time. These simplistic ideas or gender and wage aren’t there. Dedication to the company etc has its value.

We do some people aspire for equality? I thought we should celebrate diversity? People are good at different things. I know a lot of women who aspire to earn nothing at all and actively seek out the ability to rely upon someone who does. Men can't do that.

The earnings/income gap (not the wage gap) is almost entirely due to women working lesser-paid jobs and working fewer hours in general.

Women choose lower-paying professions/positions such as nursing, hair stylist, nailist, cashier, housewife, and so on. This aligns with their interests and also gives them the flexibility to take time off and take care of kids, which is not a strange thing for a woman to do.

Men choose higher paying professions/ positions such as engineering, doctors, lawyers, politicians, corporate work, and so on. Since men can't birth children, it makes more sense for them to focus on bringing home a larger income to be able to support a family. This is normal.

Higher-paid professions tend to be highly specialized and scaleable (meaning you can serve more people and gain more revenue in a shorter time).

The key is that women choose to make less money, which is alright. I am not really sure why they keep pumping out this same article multiple times a year that implies "Women earn 70 percent of what men do for the same job because the workplace is sexist!" That is not what is being measured here.

Here are good examples of the supposed pay gap.

My brother and sister in law are both professionals in the same profession both graduated the same year, same university passed the same professional licensing at the same time.

But my sister in law makes considerably less than my brother even today with all their children now long out of school and working adults.

So why the difference?

Well before and still today, my brother leaves for work before 7:00 to start work at 8:00 and will not return home for dinner and if lucky he may get home by 21:00 this has been like that since he started working.

As for my sister in law, she would usually start at 9:00 and would be home long before 20:00 usually before 19:00 and this is still the case.

They actually did the calculation of their respective salaries breaking them down to what they are getting if paid hourly.

Turn out despite getting a lows salary, my sister in law actually makes slightly more per hour, not much just about a dollar or two.

This isn't rare or even unusual, this has been pointed out in many studies but for political reasons always ignored.

My wife in Japan has a position that has a considerable amount of responsibility, requiring long long hours.

She isn't paid hourly and doesn't have the level of education that many of her male counterparts have.

But her salary reflects the responsibilities and long hours and she is paid more than her male counterparts who work fewer hours and a lot more than her female counterparts that nearly all leave exactly on time.

Recently some of the female counterparts at the same employee level found out how much more my wife was making and complained (each level has the same base male or female, then their are certain factors education, certificates, responsibilities/duities, hours, etc... that increase the individual's salary).

So the CFO had a meeting with these women and said

" no problem, if you want the same salary then agree to increase your workload and spend more time at the office and working"

Funny enough not one took him up on the offer, all preferring to remain at their present salary and leaving on time.

The male counterparts never said a thing they all knew my wife makes more, but they are not interested in doing even longer hours or having even more responsibilities.

And in the west , the gap is far wider.

Yes and if you look up a few things, you will find that several major corporations changed their pay systems to all hourly, giving both men and women the same hourly wage.

The results were men increased thier earnings and women's earnings dropped.

Why? Because women prefer to not remain at work passed their scheduled time.

Men often don't have a choice, despite the propaganda men are still the ones that contribute the most in households even when both partners/married couples, etc... are earning the same salary, this even more if they have children.

Even in relationships where the woman earns more the majority of the home expenses, (mortgage, power, etc...) are paid by the man.

well, when absolutely nothing changes, and just cheap talk happens, of course you will have the same results.

As the article says the gap is largely due to few women in managerial positions. This is, of course, in part at least since managers in Japan work insane hours and that women are expected to take care of kids and cooking, so women don't go into managerial positions or aren't chosen for managerial positions.

Does anyone track the "free time" gap? I'm guessing men have only 60% of what woman in Japan have.

There are too many variables here for why this is the case. Previous posters got it right. On top of that, add this:

deep rooted misogyny of the Japanese culture. However,

women also do not want to have a career. Ask 100 women, 95 of them will answer that thier purpose is too find a guy, preferably as rich as possible, get married, and then become a housewife, having the husband as an ATM.
