I was also stunned!

On the world stage, Abe was a master. The reaction from leaders who knew and worked with him around the world will be a testament to his statesmanship and legacy. No matter what you think of the LDP this guy was the real deal.
Fighto!
Absolutely spot on.
Abe was a giant on the world stage, and an icon among the free world. His legacy as a champion of democracy is secure.
The democratic world is reeling.

Just announced Abe passed away in the hospital.
RIP Abe Shinzo.

So sad to hear of his death. He will be missed on the world stage but as others have already pointed out his legacy on democracy is secure.
Thoughts to his family for their loss and to the Japanese people who respected him no matter what side of politics they are on.
Plenty of anti Abe people may have different views, but the man stood by what he believed.

What a sad day. I am really gutted.
No matter what his policies were he doesn't deserve to be shot
of course nobody deserves to be shot. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
We are going to miss you Abe Shinzo.

I think it's fine to disagree with a persons poltics, but to down vote people's posts that merely convey condolences to someone who just died is less than human. Some people need to get a life.
bokuda
Nobody downvotes posts of condolences per se.
I can see the pattern... they downvote the posts if they talk about politics.
Let's keep the politics out of this.
Lets connect at human level.

No one will bat an eyelash either when this guy goes to court and gets the death penalty for it either.
Up until now, if someone only murder one person, no death penalty, but that invisible wall will be busted down with Abe's assassination.

RIP Abe-san. You deserved better than this.
In China however, Abe's shooting triggered unfavorable comments from tens of thousands of nationalist citizens on social media.
Some quipped, "Hope he's not OK," while dozens half-jokingly called the shooter "a hero" or "anti-Japan hero." Others said Abe's injuries were a comfort to the souls of people who had died in Japan's invasion of China during World War II.
Did not expect anything better from them.

Typical Chinese social media. The CCP has been fanning the anti-everyone-else flames far too long. If the posts are still up, it means the CCP "approves". Their censors quickly remove anything they do not approve.

Offering condolences to PM Ardern over the death of a pet is uncommonly thoughtful for someone in Mr. Abe's position. Not mentioned anywhere but one wonders if there is a dog or cat who is now wondering where their "dad" is? Just a terrible thing all around for his family and for Japan.
Happy Day
Abe was able to form deep, lasting relationships with so many world leaders. He was a giant for Japan and democracy and his legacy will live on.
