That’s a sensible decision.

Good news, I’m glad to see this idiotic casino project falling apart. Its a long shot but I hope Osaka develops some sense and drops its bid too.

Literally over the moon at the news! Kudos to Yokohama for giving up literally trillions of future yen to preserve the city’s historical charm.

a big congrats to Yokohama!

you don't want to become a Macau, which is basically a money laundering haven for the criminals and corrupt govt officials!

This is good to hear. I liked Yokohama each time I visited, and some very dear friends, a young couple with a new baby, live there. Yokohama, or any place out of Vegas, doesn't need a casino. They're addictive, and worse.

But we all know that. When was I last in a casino? 33 years ago, when my daughter was conceived at Vegas's Tropicana (gone now). Great golf, April that year was more than warm even at my 7:20 TOT. Sex must have been good that night because my daughter's truly a 'chip of the old block'.

JT - please don't delete this message; it brings fun to mind, and it's not dirty in any sense.

Kindest regards to all.

@Trevor

Presumably you were staying in a hotel at the casino. You weren’t performing on the blackjack table..? ; )

Thank you Yamanaka-san. That was a quick decision and promises well. Now look at ways to improve the management of the city. There are so many big companies moving their offices to Minato Mirai - hopefully that will be a good source of revenues, as well as if more people move to the new housing developments in the waterfront area. Not my cup of tea, but good for the city's coffers, I hope!

Does not mean the plans for the IR will not go ahead. The casino was physically a small part of that anyway. Yamanaka will be guided by his Yokohama masters that installed him as Mayor and will bend in whatever direction they tell him to when the time is right.

People forget that gambling is already in Japan at ridiculous levels.

Or yo forgot about the Horse Racings? Slot machines? Roulettes ? The Pachinko Parlors? You can find those even on remote villages or high up in the mountain.

But no, I guess Poker or Black Jack are the real devil that get the people addicted and turn bad :)

Or people are well aware that those things exist, know all about the negative social consequences that go with them, and don’t want yet another version of the same bad thing plaguing their country?

That’s a Pyrrhic victory only. Instead of having a theoretical chance of getting out your daily trap into wealth, you are kept exploited in the precarious workforce and only surrounded by gambling with ultra high house advantages. While on average live roulette tables would take only 3 to 6% out of your wallet and baccarat or black jack 10 to 15%, you’ll lose much more with the officially allowed gambling, more than the half at lotto and 25% on the boat , horse, velo and motorbike race tracks and I am very sure it’s even worse at the pachinko and slot machine parlors. It’s just only kind of an own goal to protest against those IRC, additionally considering less input from international guests, paying then a part of the taxes you have to pay now.

Oh well.

I suppose I'll have to continue paying the highest city taxes in the country to the most wasteful politicians Japan has on offer. And that's saying something.
