Think of running out of gas or vapor lock midair.

Think of all the stupid, idiotic things you see other drivers doing. Now imagine them doing that above your house.

The only way we'll ever get flying cars except for as toys for the ultra-rich is for AI pilots to be reliable, certified, safe, and routine.

It's not going to get any better if you take bad drivers and make them equally bad pilots.

Yes but not like the Jetsons. No way will you be able to just fly yourself. Think more flying taxi, to start with in major cities and with a qualified pilot and strict air control, evolving in to completely AI controlled multi level “highway” in the air.

Google the numerous small multi engined electric craft being developed by small and large companies. Airbus to start ups.

The question only says 'the future'. It doesn't say how far into the future. Of course there will be eventually.

By far the biggest market is the mass market so they will have to be available to the "every man" to be financially viable. Yes they will be automated but with the ability for manual emergency control.

Just doing taxi's would be too expensive for the users and not enough vehicles to make much money for the makers.

More jobs being taken by technology that means less people with income to spend on taxi's.

Not near future but further future magnetic field waves streets in air, only transportation cars or convoys, no need fuel, only automation courses, speed limited and time limitation for stops. For business purposes on time destination express cars non stops. The rest underground streets or tunnels. On ground allowed only by walkers.

Flying cars are a long ways off, for various reasons - not least that so many people are incompetent at driving in 2 dimensions much less flying in 3. Automated flying vehicles maybe.

If flying cars were to become common, it would pretty much eliminate the need for so many roads. That would be one positive side effect. But I don't see it in my future,
