Do you check work emails on your days off, after you wake up in the morning or at night after you return home?

I just check my email before I start work, before and after lunch, and 1 hour before closing off the work day. I wouldn't touch my email after working hours, I'm not being paid to correspond to work-related stuff off the clock anyway. Maintain you work-life balance, draw the line and enforce it.

working 6 days a week I make sure that when I'm off I'm off. When I'm not at work that's time for my family and my 2 passions- Martial arts and bodybuilding

Depends on if I had anything really important on Friday, in case it needs some sort of follow up.

While working sure, on my own time NO!

I run my own business, so I check my emails a few times over the weekend, but unless something is really urgent, I won't respond until business hours begin again.

When I shut my laptop down it stays shut until the next work day. I maintain a work/life balance, and never the twain shall meet. Same goes for the work mobile - knocking off time it is off!

Nope. When I have the day off it's mine

I check everything, but never reply unless it is a real emergency, I think the last one was like 8 years ago.

If you are self employed your would be foolish not to.

I work in a company that is 24/7/365, hospitality industry. I can't ever really "turn off" so to speak, so I check messages/answer phones on my day off, after work, and on vacation. Maybe only just to say I am off and will check later, but I still answer. My entire working life has been in Japan, so it rubs off.

I wish I didn't, I am not paid nearly enough for it (I made more back in my english teaching days), but I just feel really guilty if I don't check things, especially since my team is TINY.

Check them? Yes.

Reply to them? Unless somebody's hair is on fire, that waits until Monday.

Given that I run my own place, yes. I do a lot of work at home, and that has no clock, but always deadlines.

Unfortunately my work requires me to do it because emergencies happen and they have heavy consequences, but most of the time there is nothing I need to do to deal with the problem so I can just reply I was informed and deal with it on Monday.

What's a day off?

Self employed and with the way things are now, I cannot risk missing a single opportunity to make a few yen!

I don't have any days off.

I might stumble upon some while reading about when my packages are arriving but I try to avoid doing anything work-related while not at work.

I check my emails after finishing everything else in the morning. Water always comes first, followed by physical and mental exercise.

I’m quitting my job in a few months and I’ve been checking them pretty regularly while off using paid holidays. The person taking over my job is a nice fella but a bit of a nervous type and has quite a few questions. I thought I’d do the decent thing.

In regular circumstances, I don’t check them. I know some who make a hard rule of not checking them, which I get, but a bit of flexibility in rare situations is okay for me.

Since coming to Japan, one habit that I have cut out is checking work emails outside of working hours. I also don't accept work calls outside of working hours. Japanese companies don't value the time of their employees so I show them the same courtesy.

I used to lock my work phone in my desk before leaving the office at the end of the day. Now that I work mainly from home, I still put the company phone on silent and stick in in a drawer after I clock out.

I run my own business, so I'm working and checking e-mails any time from when I wake up to when I go to bed, usually after 2am, 7 days a week, ordering stock and checking on orders. I send e-mails, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm local time for those that I am contacting, according to their time zone. Sometimes I have to stay up until 4am or be on the PC at 7am if an auction closes then in some distant time zone. It has to be really worth it now, as I'm getting on a bit.

I don't know whether it is unusual, but I always use e-mail for work, never the phone. I'd never get anything done if the phone kept ringing. E-mail is much easier to deal with, maintains an accurate, dated record of business and allows me to deal with stuff when I'm ready. Plus my morning cuppa, meals, gardening, Kdrama sessions and the football is never disturbed by work.
