Do you consider North Korea's missile launches a real threat to Japan's security?

In my opinion, North Korea wouldn't waste a good missile against Japan or against any of its "perceived threats" and risk being squashed for it. If Japan has to fear anything from North Korea, it should be cyber attacks. They've managed to make lots of cash because of it

my fear is that NK misfires and a rocket actually lands on Japanese soil sparking a greater conflict

Japan's security is threatened by the US having bases on its soil, However, this is a strategic policy by the US. Have bases on other nations soil and so deflect any attack on US mainland. This is the same reason that the US is not concerned about NK having intermediate range missiles, as long as they can't reach mainland US. America First.

.

Of course it's a threat.

The missiles aren't birthday balloons.

They are lethal .

Japan's security is threatened by the US having bases on its soil,

Absolutely false, if US basis wouldn’t be in Japan, China, North Korea and to a very small extent Russia would have sunk their talons in this country a long time ago.

However, this is a strategic policy by the US. Have bases on other nations soil and so deflect any attack on US mainland.

There is also some truth in that, so Japan’s war past aggression tragedy also has turned and became a security safety next as well. Beneficial for both sides.

This is the same reason that the US is not concerned about NK having intermediate range missiles, as long as they can't reach mainland US. America First.

There is also some truth in that that beneficial assurance

Diplomacy. There are various forms of communications. NK's firing missiles is a form of conveying messages. A threat ? Possibly but not uncalculated.

It doesn't matter where they are launched from, it matters where they land. You can throw a million rocks in the water, and it's no big deal. Throw one at someone's forehead...

I think they're just saber rattling. And the geography of NK means that when they fire a missile into the water, it goes towards Japan, simply due to Japan being the country that sits on the other side of their waters. So it doesn't mean they are necessarily shooting missiles at Japan, they are shooting them into the water, and Japan is on the other side of that water.

Or maybe they are meant to be threats to Japan. Who knows.

We could ask Trump, so he can send a love letter to Kim to find out more.

DPRK sees common hatred of Japan as a way to unite Koreans' feelings, north and south. DPRK has a long history of threatening to turn Japan into a sea of flames.

Was all that just bombastic lies and rhetoric?

It certainly feels like a threat, and those missiles surely are a threat. Japan has never threatened to attack NK, and she does not have any attacking missiles pointed towards DPRK, but any sensible Japan needs to be able to defend herself.

the way I see it, the stats always add up and eventually one of them will get away. The majority are aimed at Japan, but be nice if they aimed it at Siberia in Russia or the Yellow Sands of China both unpopulated areas and not always in the water. But hey what do I know the odds eventually do pay and when they do its a big payday. In this case not for Japan so my vote is most definitely.

Nihon has much to fear but North Korea is not one of the threats. The two greatest threats to Japan's 'security' and overall safety now and in the future are the United States and the continued presence of Abe Shinzo as Prime Minister and his burning desire to make Nihon capable of being destroyed again in foreign misadventure. But, should that happen, the next one will be the last and almost certainly the end of the Royal Family. Does the recent news story regarding a U.S. submarine launching a long range missile almost directly under a civilian airliner not balance news such as this? These Bukhan missiles were the war equivalent of Japanese backdoor fireworks (senko hanabi) compared to what will hit U.S. bases and the areas of Nihon around them when America finally angers someone enough to retaliate. This is just Japanese media pushing FEAR as all national media does to mitigate resistance and independence and instill OBEDIENCE in their populations of workers.

I can´t believe a majority of JT readers said yes to this ridiculous question. Good grief!
